- (3 of 7) Welcome to the Typography Week 3 Critique - If you are interested in the typography course, check it out here - bit.ly/Type01_yt
Have you ever been stuck while designing something and have wanted professional feedback? We understand that the design process can be tough without guidance through the process. If you want to learn why basic typography skills matter, this critique is for you.
For this episode, we have asked our Typography 01 students to submit their assignments for an opportunity to receive a critique. Chris Do and Milka Broukhim conduct the critique live so we can all learn together.
In this part 3 of 7 critique episodes, we will review the concept of "Breaking down and learning how to see" using One Weight, and Two Point Sizes. We'll talk about how to group sections based on importance and hierarchy.

These critiques are teaching me so much. Appreciate that you're picking the ones which are learning opportunities, not whether they're 'good' or 'bad.'
I do feel like Chris is being a little over-polite and not speaking up when he disagrees with Milka. More pushpull, please! Makes it tighttighttight.
Milka is a good teacher. His metaphorical analogies make his teaching memorable. You can't forget PUSH & PULL, TIGHT TIGHT, SILOS, SOCIAL DISTANCING.....
I Cant wait for the next episode with Milka. Great job.
Thank you thefutur.
29:14 - shows her experience as a designer. It’s easy to make something cool, the trick to this study is to make something well designed without tricks (Color, gradients, etc.).
On top of all else, in this series Chris has demonstrated how patient he can be 😉😉
The perfect teacher: enthusiastic about the subject, highly knowledgeable, and almost unlimited patience with the lesser skilled.
There is definitely some push and pull between Chris and Milka. And I absolutely love it :D
Great content! It makes me wonder how amazing it would be to attend a good design college and sit in classrooms full of people that share the same passion enthusiastically. Being self-taught and socially awkward, I have always felt like something is missing...
You have my support :)
Chris and Milka, you guys put in so much time and effort all so that we can learn. For free. I so appreciate all of your generosity.
I'm not a fan about Milka's design decisions... But the way she uses metaphores to express/defend her take on typography intrigues me.
"Fun lay-out. My eye is not reading, but dancing". I'm remembering that.
She’s great
I'm grateful for this type of content. Thanks for your efforts y'all!
Glad you enjoy it!
Guys, this is better than my college education, I shit you not...and it's free. Killing it as usual!
Thank you very much! These are fun to watch and educational too!
Glad you like them!
Thank you for all this content Chris, amazing tips and critiques from Milka and you!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for posting this critiques. It really helps a lot to improve and open up new layout ideas :)
Welldone Chris and Milka's! you both are my Great Teacher!
Absolutely loved Chris and Milka’s dynamic
Beautiful class! Can't wait for next week critique!
it's up!
Big props for reuploading
This what I was searching for ,the structure of composition
Yah, back then it SUCKED. Rewind 30+ years ago with the knowledge I have now (I get it today, SO, thank you...THANK YOU). DANG, IT though. I had no idea way back then why those assignments were important to type or layout or anything. Back then I was a horrible listener but very lovable in personality. By the way, I got an A for being a lovable personality not for my work but the woo inside my smile. I understand why now. The learning opportunities I missed by not practicing and listening. The silver lining today is I love to learn, it means more than money and being valued. Being wrong most of the time feels great because I get to learn. I am a designer in theory. Back then, however, being lovable was a distraction and a missed opportunity in my growth. I know now typography, design, layout, illustration and anything visual or designed has nothing to do with being "LIKED" but rather all matter of things to do with understanding the principles of balance, design, and layout. All of which I am valuing now.
you weren't ready to hear back then.
@@TheFuturAcademy? I'll be ready just want to learn a bit more. To my story, back then, I was serious about being good and improving. I loved school, academia was heaven to me. Though I never understood what skills were required to assess my own work and I admire lots of work so I was always distracted. I doubt I could have made the time back then. I thought acceptance from my peers and instructors defined how good my work was? After college, I knew I would be the best creative director in all of MPLS. Okay, I was delusional by just a tad? I lugged a portfolio around most of downtown MPLS. I did that for months and no one hired me. So I did myself a favor and left my portfolio, at a bus stop. Yes, 4 years of work and I walk away from it. That was perhaps the worse decision I made but at the time I was happy not to lug that enormous bag around any more or walk into another room of stoic eyes much more developed and discerning than my own. I gave up and that is my life regret.
Thanks for sharing Tim. it's me Chris btw.
Thanks for sharing your valuable thoughts :)
i totally connect with the abstract explanations from milka
Thank you, guys!
Yowza! These videos are great and making a big difference for me and my work.
Chris, there is an all caps feature in the character dialog box and it is over riding
what you are trying to do with the eyedropper tool.
helpful! id love to have my modern resume layout critiqued like this. These videos have been inspiration for it.
Glad it was helpful!
Do you have a portfolio with it?

Thank you very much :)

No problem 👍

Thank you Meboli for your kind words...I was university professor for 15 yrs :)
I know not too many people noticed the"E" that is a miss on RZN8 think Chris Was Tired cause he never misses those small things. @1:55:06
By the way, it's Josef Müller-Brockmann, not Josef Brockmann.
one of the best critique hahahaha
This got me interested in making these . How can I get started?
enroll in the class or just start

Thankyou Chris and Team! Very great content. Shout out from Indonesia. -@hendrickputrak
hello Indonesia.
Some great tips from 32 mins.
Milkaaaaaa! Yay!
Now that I look at these, every slanted piece of typography reminds me of TENET's poster.
The brain has a heart?
it does if she says so right?
Josef Müller-Brockmann
57:00 has been nice before...
Thanks for the great content. But unfortunately Milka makes the whole thing a bit exhausting for me. Sometimes she sounds a bit like a crazy fan-girl of Chris and a really stressful client or mother...
Still, I've learned a lot from you guys. Thanks for that! 😊🙌🏻
the design is all about hurting brain 🤣
:( why lag
Please tell :(
This lady gets on my nervs. But it doesn't diminshes her expertise, just saying it influences my concentration. It might be her voice
Actually she sounds like client from hell, her voice is very annoying and the way she is giving 'orders' to Chris. I tried to finish this episode from two takes and gave up around hour and 20 minutes. Couldn't take it anymore. She knows what she is talking about, but the way she talks is just unbearable. The first time I stopped watching is when she was talking how her daughter is amazing and she learned everything from her. :D :D :D
we all have our own preferences, but don't look pass the knowledge that Milka has.
@@TheFuturAcademy That is why I didn't give up, but It was an agony all the way :DD
the girl making the gift wrap typography was irritating
Milka likes type the same way she likes men
Tight tight tight!
that doesn't even make sense Brian! but good try.
This typography thing is like the most overthought bs ever. "Focus on forms not space between forms." When was the last time you did not think as a 'designer'? How lost are u in this typography thinking... It takes u 2 secs to look through whole page on a website and you think of a letter with like 500px height being hard to read on screen. Come on jeez. I know it's hard to critique almost nothing but since you gotta sell air and pour water instead of sence... come up with smth more interesting
