    I remember, vaguely as I was generally drunk and stoned, seeing The Angels back in the late 1970s, in pubs, bars and taverns in Sydney. I feel their recordings,band even the filming of their performances, never captured the pure energy of the band live. Doc Neeson was one of the great front men in the history of rock. The way he commanded the stage left everyone else in his shadow. Who needed punk when we had Australian Pub Rock. He same dynamism but with great playing. (Though admittedly I did love The Saints, Radio Birdman, Ramones, Sex Pistols et al)

    Lead guitarist Rick Brewster once said he decided early in the band's career to stand absolutely still because he never knew where Doc Neeson (singer) was going to go, and neither did Doc. I would recommend you check out the studio version, just as hot. Other tracks you might like include "I Ain't The One," "After The Rain," Can't Shake It." Another fun fact: The Angels were part of the stable that enjoyed the polish of producers Vanda & Young. Harry Vanda & George Young were members of Australian rock royalty, The Easybeats, and George Young is Malcolm & Angus Young's older brother.

    I remember the Enmore Theatre gig during the Liveline tour. We were down the front in the small bit in front of the first seats, packed in and going hard. Mr Damage kicked in and the crowd went fkn nuts. My mate, small bloke, got his foot stuck at the back near the seats but carried on. At the end Doc launched himself (all 6ft 6 of him) into the crowd, landing right over my mate, stared him down, gave him the devil horns and laughed. My mate couldn’t react because his foot was now deeply wedged and he was carrying Doc’s weight. Somehow it all turned out right but we bought a bag of ice at a local servo later so he could sit on the train and nurse his ankle. Amazing show.

  • @amadd5641
    @amadd5641 Před 7 měsíci

    OMG, I'm glad that you love that one man. I learned to recite it word for word when I was about 16. Now late 50's and still love to crank it up and sing to that one.
    I still don't know the actual meaning, but all I have heard is that it was written about some drunk guy coming from their show deciding if he should drive his car home or not. He was known as Mr. Damage. That came from John Brewster himself. The Angels were like that. They'd write about fairly ordinary stuff and make it sound big.

    • @amadd5641
      @amadd5641 Před 7 měsíci

      I can sort of see it in the lyrics that Mr. Damage may have killed somebody or somebodies drunk driving. "Holding council with the King and Queen means his decision to drive drunk or not. Just my interpretation. Mr. Damage holds the curse.They would never perform that song for many years but the fans loved it and wanted it. Often Doc would say "You asked for this, now take it!"

    • @amadd5641
      @amadd5641 Před 7 měsíci

      Can sort of put the pieces together that he was seen 3 days later in a brand new suit of clothes for a very special day to attend the funeral of whom or those he killed whilst drunk driving. My interpretation only. I don't know who Mr.Damage is (probably was),, but he'd probably not want to reveal himself that the song was about him.

    • @amadd5641
      @amadd5641 Před 7 měsíci

      Maybe when they knew he had died, then they start playing it at concerts. Before, they would never play it live. All the lyrics seem to fit with what writer or Co-writer John Brewster said that it was about a drunk guy they called Mr.Damage making that decision whether to drive home drunk or not.Which ended in tragedy. Of course that is massive, and massively sad, but I was first thinking that it was about the fall of Rome or some big event in history that changed the world. Tragedies always change something, They were/are much more intelligent than an average pub rock band.
      Since I had recited it word for word since 16, I would say that it is about a drunk driver " Mr. Damage" who was seen 3 days later in a brand new suit of clothes, for a very special day. ie: attending a funeral.
      Of course, holding frozen hands means dead hands. The problem with the Angels and Mr.Damage holds the curse is a great rocking lyric but I have watched them so many times and always went out sweating so much. They are good guys and have good morals. I think this was a conundrum with the band. RIP wonderful Doc.
