- "I (Who Have Nothing)" is Haley's song by Leiber & Stoller (2nd of 2 for each contestant). She nailed it, and this time all the judges gave her a standing ovation.
"I (Who Have Nothing)" (sometimes billed as "I Who Have Nothing") is a song originally released in English by Ben E. King in 1963, and reached #29 on the Billboard charts. The most popular version in the US was by Tom Jones, peaking at #14 in 1970.
It is based on the Italian song "Uno dei tanti," (English: "One of Many") with music by Carlo Donida and lyrics by Giulio "Mogol" Rapetti. It was released by Joe Sentieri in 1961. The lyrics for "I (Who Have Nothing)" were translated into English by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Some critics believe that part of this song's melody was later copied for "Nights in White Satin," released by the Moody Blues in 1967.
The song was included in the musical revue "Smokey Joe's Cafe".
Jordin Sparks (winner of American Idol 6 in 2007), performed it for her Top 11 song.

She would have easily have won had American Idol not permitted power voting. Indeed, by the end of the season, Haley was by far the most popular contestant on the show.

I'm not disagreeing with you about her rasp but that is just part of her vocal ability. What's so impressive to me is how she can switch from that raspiness to high register sweetness and purity, low register sensuality and then to sheer belt with such effortlessness, and use these colours so musically to bring out the lyrics and musicality of melody. She's a crazily accomplished singer for her age. Already a great singer for me.
Trevor, when you see her live you appreciate her versatility even more, she makes singing seem so easy.

I finally managed to see her live a few months ago when she came across to Scotland. You're absolutely right about her. There are quite a few other very good singers out there, some with richer or more powerful voices or greater range than Haley, but none show the same versatility in material they handle and the huge range of tonal colours in their voices, and the sheer musicality to use these colours so, so appropriately.

Reasons why this was awesome:
1 - It was Jordin's song in the show. She knew it. She still chose it. Then she slayed it a million times over.
2 - She listened to Gaga. She brought the drama. Which is probably because..
3 - She was just in tears 5 minutes before this performance.
4 - The crowd cheers after her first wail. By the second wail, everyone's lost it. I swear, even JLO's arm is in the air. Look for it.
5 - She gets her 3rd standing ovation. An Idol first. The haters can eat sh!t.

It's def house. People went crazy after she sang that performance. All the idol blogs had her at 90 percent for best performance of the night. I got chills on my arms listening to HOTRS. And even people that didn't like Haley's voice were praising that performance.

For some strange reason, people generally reckon that all that matters with THIS SONG is power vocals. They all get swept away when someone starts belting it out regardless of how badly the singer misinterpreted the lyrics and failed to give flesh to the emotions of the lyrics effectively - poor musicality. Hence, they are wowed by stereotypical performances by Jordin, Candice, and such. Haley, on the other hand, is like a surgeon wielding a scalpel; she is more accurate and effective in interpreting the lyrics: inward looking self pity at her own lowly state, envy for the other girl, frustration-filled declaration of her love. All these cleverly done with inflections, subtle pantomimes, and poignant push with her unique vocals - and investing it with her own oomph and panache. She gives us goosebumps in all her performances because she sings the words like she lived them. This is what makes this such a singularly outstanding performance.
What you wrote is absolutely genius and makes total sense. Never thought really of any of those things. Just knew that I connected with Haley's performance and didn't care much for the rest of them out there.

Had American Idol not permitted power voting, Haley Reinhart would have won in a major landslide going away.
As in that performance, Haley looked like Lorena Bobbitt waiting furiously at home for her husband to return after a long night of womanizing on the town so she could lop off her womanizing husband's manhood.

However, she has been biding her time for some reason and refusing to sign a record deal with a major record label. Nonetheless, I think that in time she will eventually sign a record deal and enter the big leagues, and when she does, she will take the world by storm.

Pacing--she's not in a hurry to get to the next verse or phrase
She's really learned how to belt it out, then bring it down soft. Much better than many idol contestants that want to shout the entire song.

Had American Idol only permitted "one vote per individual voting" and in which is the only way to host a fair and balanced talent contest, Haley Reinhart would have won American Idol easily in a major landslide.

Haley's voice is like no other! That's why she hasn't gotten voted off! She has something special in her voice that no one in this competition has.. Don't get me wrong! I love Lauren and Scotty soo much, they have amazing voices. I would be happy if one of them won. But I think Haley really deserves this one! :) Vote Haley!!
