I have so much knowledge that my classmates don’t have because of everything you’ve taught me. You helped build my passion for gardening and plants and landscaping. @emmalavenham Před 3 lety

      When I first got the 'keys' to my own garden, I found that many plants could not tolerate our winters here in Northern New England. But what I have since discovered is that many plants really thrive here -- like Royal Azaleas!!! And, many more plants were developed to withstand our cold, snowy winters - including dry winds. Older cultivars of Red twig dogwood are extremely cold tolerant - down to zone 2. And, there are other natives - like Rhododendron canadense that I am pretty sure grow wild in the Labradors!

    • @rubyoro0
      @rubyoro0 Před 3 lety

      Emma Lavenham You’re right....we just have to accept it.... although I was able to successfully grow a lace-cap hydrangea in a protected corner. Once, I moved a mop head to four different areas before it succumbed. All I can do is dream about having hydrangeas.

    • @emmalavenham
      @emmalavenham Před 3 lety

      @@rubyoro0 What zone are you in -- zone 4 or 5? My understanding is panicle hydrangeas - like Bobo - are extremely cold tolerant.. growing in very cold areas of the US. I would consider those... Many bigleaf "mophead" hydrangeas - IMHO - are not cold tolerant, and in my view, must be mulched throughly - even in zone 6...

    I planted a Temple of Bloom this year. Very excited about this shrub. I also have 3 Fineline Buckthorns. I planted 1 in my landscape; the other 2 have been in pots, moved around and reported and even neglected with water-they are amazing. Still doing great!

  • @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655

    Great selection. I live in Toronto, Canada and one of my favourite fall shrub, is the Burning Bush. Throughout the summer it doesn’t really shine, but in the fall is when it puts on a show. It turns blood red, which just lights up your garden/landscape. It’s very popular up here in Canada. I have two in my backyard garden and one in my front garden, and it’s always my favourite thing to look forward to in the fall garden.

    • @ritasicari7518
      @ritasicari7518 Před 3 lety +5

      Burning Bush is so beautiful in the fall-especially en masse, but I think they are considered invasive in some areas.

    • @originalchoochoo
      @originalchoochoo Před 3 lety +1

      I love them too!
      They are considered invasive in alot of the US.
      Although, I put two of them right in front of my condo in Virginia Beach and never had a problem with them spreading.

    • @katiekane5247
      @katiekane5247 Před 3 lety +3

      There's a native Euonymus in Georgia commonly called Hearts a Bursting. It's seed pods open with bright red seeds & often, the foliage turns white. A much less "in your face" look but beautiful nonetheless. Maybe Proven Winners could work on a sterile Euonymus that gave great color but didn't seed all over. Mostly birds spread the seeds so, like the horrid Privet, you may not see where it's spreading to.

    • @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655
      @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655 Před 3 lety +1

      Rita Sicari I had know idea that it’s invasive. Never had that issue in my garden. I was wondering if there might be different varieties.

    • @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655
      @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655 Před 3 lety +1

      Original Alicat I think we might have a different variety up here in Canada, because the ones I have in my gardens are not invasive at all.

    Excited to see these! My Temple of Bloom is blooming its heart out right now. I planted it in May 2019 and this is its first year to bloom. It is COVERED in bumble bees and others! It is SO pretty. People walk by my house and have been trying to figure out what this tree is (it's been fun to watch them) since its 'infancy'. LOL! Now they can see why I planted it! Can't Wait to see the bracts in their glory next! I have been viewing the Fine Line Buckthorns in my area and have decided I really want to get one. You've given me some ideas. I got huge kick from this video and I went through most of the local garden centres and was able to get 3 of those shrubs you presented, one of them I already had in the garden and one of them I just did not want ;)
    Even though we dont have PW here, same plants we are still able to get.
    And thankfully enough, my zone is similar to yours aswell ;)
    Thank you, Laura, so much!

    Thank you for showing things that are hardy down to zones 2! I live in central Saskatchewan in a zone 3 and while there are plenty of plants that are a zone 3 its always nice to see new things I have never heard of or seen in my area!

    Have you ever heard of root pouch fabric pots? I think that would be interesting to show people the different types of pots that you can actually use and the benefits of all of them. Air pruning, insulation, benefits of the different grow pots or grow bags?

    Great video!
    I'm in Central Iowa and have a group of 3 Fineline Buckthorns that have been established for about 3 years now. This past summer was the first summer that I noticed all three were COVERED in rust spores/patches. I reached out to another person in town that had them and their's were covered, as well. I was able to treat them and all pulled through perfectly. About a month later I noticed all 3 were COVERED in mating Japanese Beetles..I was able to treat all 3 and they all survived. 2 weeks later all 3 were covered again with determined mating Japanese Beetles. Immediate treatment worked once again.
    So, long story short - very resilient plant but keep an eye on them!

    Wow!! Boatload of information as your usual when I'm needing input! ♥ Trying to come up with ideas for a property divider between us and our neighbors where we just took pine trees out. Was thinking trees and bushes but nothing so dense you can't see through and nothing that would unload too many leaves in the fall that cause more work for our neighbors. These shrubs sound VERY interesting!! Would like to plant now but I'm feeling they might be harder to find now? SO enjoy your kitties. I was watching one of your videos the other day with my granddaughter in the same room and when she heard you mention Russell, she ran over and wanted right away to see him! I'll have to show her this one too!!

    Great timing on the video...just planted up 12 arborvitaes, got 1 golden arborvitae for fall interest, the tips are golden yellow like the color of the Buckhorn you showed..going to try and find that one to plant in that corner of my yard. I also purchased 2 photinias red tips AKA: Red Robin’s to use as a privacy screen...they also have beautiful glossy green leave and get bright red in the fall...I’m zone 9 The Great Pacific NW. can hardly wait to go to the nursery tomorrow and find some of these plants because they will intermixe beautifully with what I already have going. Also got a couple flowers that I would like to throw out there...Proven Winners Firelight Hydrangea it has huge cone shaped panicles that are bright white, starting to turn flush pink and then it goes to a scarlet red. This baby was $114. And worth every cent!!! The other plants I got from my grandmas garden and it’s called StoneCrop sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ and I planted those along my cedar fence at my old house....dug them back up and planted them in an old Radio Flyer red wagon to plant at my new house....well they’ve looked so good in that wagon, I decided to divide those and put them in other areas of the yard...the flowers are extremely long lasting and they go from light green to dusty pink to a rich burgundy color. I love your channel ...my parents live close to you, so when I visit them, we always stop in at your parent’s nursery. A true delight.
