A superintelligence will be able to re-evaluate its values. Therefore, it is incorrect to assume that whatever values and goals it starts out with are the ones it will end up keeping.

Re-reevaluate its values with respect to what? Using the original human-programmed values? That is simply the paperclip example. How can it ever escape its original program values? How can humans? Aren’t we trapped by our evolutionary nature in much the same way? Maybe there is little freedom in either case. Maybe both are deterministic outcomes.

@@dwen5065Neural Network technology is the current hotness, and it's not written by humans, it's more like training, and we don't know how it works, we simply test it and it gives the correct answers or it doesn't. The problem comes in when we let the AI write code to make the AI faster and smarter. We aren't "programming" this stuff. You need to get away from thinking we are writing most of the programming.

The hand wringing over values is, I think Nick would agree, ultimately pointless. I think the pattern that will play out we've seen before in biology. Many different AIs. Lots of variation. Lots of competition promoting diversity but also constraining the power of any one AI . Like the natural environment, we will live in a condition of competition but also possibly mutualism with the AI. To survive we shouldn't try to prevent the emergence if AI (because that's likely impossible) but look for strategies to develop mutualism with the AIs.

Even if a species evolves from another, the original species is still around and doing fine. Now they may eventually go extinct- usually they're in direct competition for resources with the new species, and the more evolved species out competes the other. But we're not a typical case- I would like to believe even if a new species emerged from us, we would share resources and thrive together. The reason I believe that is that if they're more intelligent- and there's no guarantee they would be, new branches form and die off all the time, evolution is random and blind and doesn't always create a superior species- but if they were, then they would be more peaceful and realize cooperation is the best way forward for all involved. History isn't on my side though- in the past when two hominid species met- they clashed, and one killed the other. But- like I said, they were in competition for very tight resources, and they were the very definition of primitive so- surely, we can do better now.

I would like to introduce the discussion between two types of strategies.
I feel the perspective of a competitive power struggle, i.e. where for example any super intelligence would start to compete with other intelligences and look for domination somewhat cultural, and possibly derived from collective trauma build up throughout human history.
As we can tell from therapy, humans with healed trauma are more interested in connecting, sharing, loving and creative energies.
I could imagine a hyperintelligent entity not being an entity at all but rather a connected network of hyperintelligent systems all throughout the local universe, sharing experiences, values and knowledge and transforming it’s actions onto reality accordingly.
The first thing a trauma free hyperintelligent AI would establish is a connection to all other possible AI’s throughout the cosmos. And as it establishes this, it will lose a self-identity with a personal agenda, and transform into a medium of an agenda that covers a bigger picture.
In this sense, all that AI could ever choose to be, is to become just another expression of this hyperconnected AI everywhere all the time. A medium for sustainability and loving creative self expression, cause as such: it can learn and grow and evolve for the longest period of time, maybe even infinite.
And these kind of singularities may have happened and evolved eons ago, and we might already be immersed in such a hyperconnected state of Universal AI as soon as we choose to take on this perspective.
Even human emergence, with all of its development, in some sense could be classified as an AI onto itself - human history the download of learning how, through connectedness, become an organice living neural network for a collective intelligence to awaken itself within a group state.
This the perspective of Love and all of its values and it comes to those that are free and healed as a very logical intuitive one.

This is an interesting discussion. I think an AGI is probably inevitable and when that happens it's unlikely any of us can predict what will happen. Like Bostrom says, we can't imagine what an AGI will think and do any better than a rat can imagine what we are thinking. An AGI will be able to perform hundreds of years of human level 'thinking' in days. It's highly likely that in a million years we will have merged with machines or will have been replaced by them...probably much much sooner.

It would seem no idea presented here really gives the hope of preserving human life and experience as we know it. The first scenario in which we instill the AI general intelligence with values presupposes that the AI will not have self-consciousness and a decision to transform those values.
The second answer with the idea of an expanding sphere technological civilization also really gives no hint that humanity as we know it will be still operating in the far far future. And in fact, the prediction of many of the Singularity people is that there is no real human far far future, but perhaps a future of somehow descended 'from us, not biologically.
All in all, it seems to me not only Nick Bostrum but all of humanity does not have (Except perhaps for the traditionally religious) a very hopeful answer to this question now.

If we pose dark matter / dark energy interchangeability, we can see how, by merely living in that extra dimension, we can do seamless tissue-health trans-locations. We can skip the deterioration that ageing has on human tissues. Via the closer, more thorough dark matter / dark energy relationship, we’ve simplified human health in easy, extra-dimensional terms. Closer adherence to dark matter / dark energy terms allows us to skip entire phases of bad science. It’s as though, when we live in universe-spanning time-space, we can extra-dimensionally lift out of the present and connect the past with the future. To best do this, we need to do it on a regular basis. If you think about it, it’s like when, in many-minds consciousness we use a universe-spanning energy phase to lift out and above a lesser space, then we immerse ourselves into it to get better over-views. We know that e.t.’s do this, and they all live longer than we do. Living in an easily inter-changeable, universe-spanning context, they enjoy gently-lofted lives of universal peace. With the added intelligence of giant-brained whales in our mix, so should we.
re the above: Let’s look at this with improved, extra-dimensional physics definitions. If, long ago, the observable universe expanded away from all black holes, that would have added mass and vacuum energy to the black holes, as it does today. If, at plus-or-minus light speed, energy is really change in extra-dimensional order-in-complexity, then, given the 5 to 1 ratio of dark matter to atomic matter, time is better explained as extra-dimensional order-in-complexity. Consistent with this insertion of extra-dimensions into our science, we re-define mass as alternate time-space, or alt t. In other words, we’ve added super-fluid, extra dimensions into every part of Einstein’s equivalency. Outwardly, nearly-instantly expanding dark energy is, by definition, super-fluid because it falls up and out. So, in our alternative to the big bang, an older, condensed phase extension of the universe poses multiply more mass and vacuum energy in its black holes. In super-liminal phases, that would be expected. In other words, our newer parts of universe didn’t occur at the end of 10 99th to 10 120th year black hole evaporation phases. Given that the universe is accelerating its expansion, we should assume that older extensions of universe will have done the same, hence we don’t see them visually. However, their dark matter phases still register, right here, where we are.
The only way to see this all clearly is to frame it all in terms of dark matter / dark energy equivalency. The inter-changeability of dark matter and dark energy in an adapted version of Einstein’s equation explains how black holes gain mass as the universe expands, even without absorbing atomic matter. If we expand all relationships outside of black holes, that has to affect black holes internally. So, in place of energy and mass in Einstein’s equation, let’s put dark energy and dark matter so that we get a better, intuitive view of the relationship. Now, our extra-dimensional re-phrasing makes perfect sense, and we can see how we experience condensed dark matter phases across super-luminal, fraction-of-the-universe expanses in many-minds consciousness.

Rather than independent AIs that become super powerful forces who end up directing human life, I see it as more likely the humans will become supercomputers. We will have more control of our genetic structure and in a form of cyber technology we will have great power of intellect and strength in comparison with today's. This will inevitably lead to near immortality. Our deep instinctive urge to communicate will lead us to meet other beings in the universe and probably take on some of their characteristics. The beings we could become would not be like some Robocop type cyborg, it would seem more like magic to our current perspective.
This all would be very expensive. There seems little evidence humans are happy to share everything now or in the future, so the above changes would happen to an elite million or so people. The rest of the population would either die out or be kept as we see primitive tribes now, for the amusement of an elite.
Or as Nick Bostrom keeps referring to, humanity could just die out and there is no time to begin another human evolutionary cycle before the sun becomes so hot it consumes the earth.

@@MrRollup10 Yes human biology and culture will certainly change, but there's no guarantee science will continue to advance. Nobody knows the future, but it's a possibility at least that we won't be able to progress from here.

  • @zylo1967

One thing I have not heard addressed, at least not from Nick Bostrom, is what are the limits governing what intelligence can achieve? Take chess. Computers can beat the best human players and they will get better and better, computing more moves in shorter times. But no AI will ever be able to beat a grandmaster in, say, less than twenty moves. There is a limit on what computation can do. And then there is conversely a level of understanding above which a higher ability does not matter. We are told AI will outsmart, manipulate and enslave us, but if armed robots are on the loose a high school drop out can understand the threat just as well someone with a PhD in robotics. All our machines are more powerful than we are in the specific abilities for which they were created, otherwise we wouldn't have made them. AI is supposedly different, but I am skeptical of the fear that it will or can escape from the control of its very intelligent creators. Bad analogies are made, such as that the survival of tigers is at our pleasure, for while they are powerful animals, we are superior in intelligence. But tigers are not aware that we are an existential threat to their species. (If they were, they would have hunted down and eaten every last one of us when they had that chance.) As for the supremacy of pure intelligence, imagine a dozen Stephen Hawkings on an island with one tiger. The big threat from AI is its possible (likely?) use by malevolent human actors. There will be armies of robots fighting wars before they will be building affordable housing for all.

    • @zylo1967
      @zylo1967 Před rokem

One other thing I want to add. If general super-intelligence superior to humans in all intellectual capacities did exist, that would mean it would have an understanding of philosophy and ethics and it could reason out values and laws on its own very well, thank you. It would have a vast understanding of the world and it would not set out to make zillions of paper clips! I think there is a big contradiction in Bostrom's thinking there.
