  • Every year, over 10 lakh aspirants dream of getting into some of the most prestigious colleges of India - IITs. But you know how many actually get a seat over there? 17,000. That's it!
Now, apart from IITs there are 100s of government and private colleges that are really good for engineering. But even if we consider all of them, there are no more than 1 lakh good engineering seats available for students.
So, where do the remaining students study engineering? In those not-so-good private colleges. But the problem is that these students, their parents, and the society have the same expectations as those students in IITs.
So we thought, we need to de-influence these expectations that the parents, society, and you have from engineering.

Which is true. And tbh agar wo tumhe uss time reality batadenge to tum demotivate ho jaaoge. So in CZcams ke gadho ki sunna band karo aur apne teachers ko follow karo. And btw, if you even get decent score in JEE, you get good government and private colleges. And even if you don't, the work ethic you learn from JEE exams can help you get huge scolarships from private colleges which will be wayyyy cheaper and mentally relaxing as compared to these IITs and NITs. Aur uss mehnat ka phal fir tumhe GATE jaise exams me milega masters ke time pe. Just go and read statistics of employment after masters degree rather than listening to these fools. Competition is high now. You need to get mtech after btech jo students karte nahi hai aur engineering ko gaaliya dete hai. Mtech ke baad 7-10 lpa Tak salaries chali jaati hai freshers ki. Plus teaching bhi better hoti hai, since kuchh colleges me PhD and masters dono ki classes ek saath lagti hai. So you study what PhD students are studying. Plus you learn research skills which is required in irrational country like India

So true. This engineering bug was more predominant before 2010. Now , thanks to social media, high speed Internet, there is lot of exposure for today’s kids. As an engineering student in 2000 I hardly had any exposure and getting into IIT was considered gold standard. Anything other than iit or iim for mba , your career is considered gone case.
We were shown a small clip ( getting into iit) of the big picture which nobody has watched including parents. Kids were forced to get job somehow. It was Asif the companies are waiting for us to graduate to give jobs. The worst part is after few years we realise the mess and are unable to do a u turn because of economic and social pressures.
Off late all jobs are 24x7. Hence it is better to study around passion which also pays in long run.

It's not like shitting that if you try hard enough you will eventually shit/de-constipate yourself and get all emotional . Most so called engineering jobs in India are in reality technician jobs , they maintain shit not BUILD new stuff ! The sheep mentality filled with emotional brains these people carry with them dilute if not completely ruin the peer-group people who are actually potent engineers seek . Your point is definitely strong and logical but having passed through that phase in recent years, wanted to present to you real life problems, students of that age face, it is very difficult for a person at that age to actually make such a life changing decision. I was sure I want to understand science because it seemed interesting, but when I had to select my branch for admission in IIT, I was very confused with what branch is actually something I would enjoy pursuing as a profession. I feel, its not just the society but also the system in which this process is set, even before the kid understands what they actually like, they are put to face the competitive exams. I feel even if they take up engineering, during the four years in a good college like IIT, they get exposure to actually understand what they love doing, because of the peer group, academic structure, extracurriculars, seniors, professors and facilities.

Specially core streams like mech, electrical are doomed. Got into a non tech govt job and surviving now. Wasted 4 precious years. Will never match the salary of IT and promotions ever. Was passionate about Mechanical and especially Automobile.
The infrastructure in private colleges (even a top tier college in WB) is poor. We did not have labs and we were forcing administration to set it up. Professors were worse.
The main part is campus placements.
We had 2 or 3 pool campus where only 2 or 3 companies came. Only 3 or 4 out off 25k were being selected.
Baaki sab IT pe gaya. I liked my stream, did not seat in IT as they would not let us seat in further placements).
Gave CVs to 30 40 companies.
Got no reply from them literally.
That's the reality of mechanical engineering.
Now I have lost all motivation of life. Forgotten all the basics except some nomenclature. A friend of mine was offered a job of 6k salary for being Mechanical engineer!
So my advice is to look for other opportunities now.
I feel that passion and knowledge are not really enough.
Now I am 30 and can not even think of honing new skills.
I am not into programming part, artistic fields or automlbile related fields are welcomed. If anyone provides me advice I will gladly accept it.

Hello, I can say you are like my son. My son is 17 years old, passionate about mechanical engineering and looking for taking admission in civil or mechanical in IIT this year. He is getting cs and allied subjects in 3 tier iits, but he don't like it. So we are not forcing him.
Reading all these stories about mechanical and civil engineering scars us too. But what I feel is admission should not be taken if there is no interest. Then one becomes money making machine.
Some important lessons which I have learned in life I can share with you
      1) Never ever think that my age is over for learning anything new. Slowly but steadily learn new skills in holidays ir weekend. It will take some time but you will get it and it will pay you. My husband is pharmacist. He is 50 but still spends time learnings new skills. It is important otherwise one gets outdated.
      2) Don't compare yourself with others in terms of salary. That will always demotivate you. Just focus on yourself. Some times lot of money also don't give happyness.
      3) don't keep yourself in one closed box. World is small now. Always keep trying and if you feel some place is good for your career, move out of the cage.
30 is very young age. I have seen people changing career, moving out of country at 40 plus and doing exceptionally good in life. Don't loose hopes.
All the Best for your Bright future 👍

Actually everything is dependent on demand & supply along with utilisation including engineers. Engineering was past, is present & will be future of world but only when its utilised properly by a nation. Engineering booms with industrial boom. Those who get jobs after engineering mainly get IT Jobs and others simply do not. This is absolutely what happens when the core sectors or secondary economic sector/ manufacturing doesn't grow much or doesn't divesify. We are in absolute necessity for all types of core engineers as a developing nation , take Civil for example- our civil engineers doesn't get job in India while we have pathetic town & urban planning at the same time. Mechanical Engineers are a lost case- that's a primary army of any nation trying to achieve an industrial revolution, that's what India needs the most now. We need chemical engineers for sustainable fuel, waste processing, safe food & agro processing etc in such times of sustainability crisis but they don't have jobs!! We were world leaders in metallurgy and what's the condition of metallurgical engineering today! Till Europe's steam engine, we used to be the queen of the Eastern Oceans(as per European authors themselves) but now even in IIT ocean & naval engineering students get non-core jobs, there's nothing of our shipping industry.
This can be said regarding every core branches and their high relevance of nation building & their current ignorance. This can solely fixed by fundamental reforms in education, industrial policies, government incentives towards their betterment for enhancing both public & private sectors and their diversification along with regional & local government bodies cooperation. Effective & sustainable long term prioritization of engineering branches for rapid indigenous industrial growth is the sole way for also eradication of mass poverty & unemployment, that's how it happened in Europe 150 years ago.

Another problem is that, the polytechnic diploma colleges are not anymore encouraged. The hierarchy of organisational structure is totally demolished after private BE and Btech graduates. Industries hire fresh btech for filling up technician and junior engineer ranks. There's also very least funding for ITI vocational courses and polytechnic colleges. The junior skilled Craftsmen and technicians are scarce these days. As workmanship pride is gone, everyone wants to do btech. And private colleges are disaster.

I've passed Engineering in 2012. I'm unemployed from last 8 years. From last two years I am begging money on signal of town.
I was from poor backward class family. I was maths topper in 12th and got scholarship for degree. I paid zero fees.
After studying B E and doing all possible course, I didn't get any job despite having skills.
Companies used to say that they don't hire degree, only diploma candidates got job. Then the country in which I was born, the great India, I was told by society that I was useless and had no skills, this attitude of society saved them from providing employment and show their greatness. I am sorry and unlucky to be Indian.
My family is starving we have to eat free meals in prasadalay then I go to beg all day in same town and signal.
I don't have acceptance due to caste.

Easter egg hai: Engineers made the matrix and changed all of humanity’s reality. This series de influences reality. Isn’t that interesting :)
MBA video playing the background reminds us we are all in the same boat, engineers or MBAs. It’s not the choices we made that determine our fate. But what we do today onwards that will.
