    I love how you do a little hop to get all your petticoats in order. But what is just the best is to see how happy your dresses make, like in this video where you say “I love this dress!” and are so happy through the rest of your video. I love that feeling. It’s so special. It’s so wonderful you get it and share so much of it with the rest of us.

      jaunty
      adjective
      Having or expressing a buoyant or self-confident air.
      Sprightly; lively.
      Stylish.
      I'd say you meet all qualifications for jaunty.
      Love the rich jewel tones and detailing and how she brings it to life with the rock climb and twirls. Shows they were not the stiff repressive set pieces of pictures but active garments on dynamic women.

      This can be said of many eras ...industrialism and low- payed factory labor into the early 1900's,1970's drug abuse ,1980's,90's,00's denial of stay at home moms, inhibition of reproductive rights , and so on...
      Puritans and Quakers/Shakers generally contradictory to wasteful opulent extravagant shows of clothing,but even these were more suited to European weather rather than north american. Organic clothing still shows more considerateness even nowadays.

    That is a fascinating dress.
    I need to make some of those shifts. That is just the cut I need. For my modern everyday clothes. And yes once I finally fit my corset right I will be wearing a corset and stay most everyday.

    • @marthabenner6528
      @marthabenner6528 Před 2 lety +4

      I should have said or. When I fit them right I will be wearing a corset "or" stay most everyday.
      Mostly because they are comfortable and fitting bras are difficult to find. But it's really so the lines of my dress sit right. The difference between my t-shirt dress making me look frumpy and fat, or really elegant, is a corset. While my ill-fitting corset actually adds a few inches to my waist I look skinnier with it on. my ill-fitting corset is not uncomfortable in the least, it just doesn't have enough bust support.

    I don't care for1860s dresses . . . except for the princess dresses worn over hoopskirts. Those are amazing. And the gathering at the back of the first petticoat is ingenious. Thanks for sharing this beautiful dress!

    I really loved the color and detailing of this gown. And it looked lovely on you, as always. The fashion plate with the original design also showed a model in a two-piece gown, which as you noted was more versatile. I wonder if one style was more popular than the other (1-piece vs 2-piece), or if they were equally popular during this period.

    • @davidhutchison3343
      @davidhutchison3343 Před 2 lety +13

      Generally, 2 pieces were a lot more common around this time. In fact they were 3 piece outfits, with 1 skirt a day bodice and an evening bodice. This increased the versatility of the garment. However, with Princess seamed garments becoming popular (more so in the 1870's) dresses, as distinct from skirts and bodices, started to become the norm. It would be the 1890's before separates became popular again.

    • @meacadwell
      @meacadwell Před 2 lety +4

      @@davidhutchison3343 Agreed with everything you said except for the separates becoming popular in the 1890's. The cuirasse bodice was popular from the 1870's through the 1880's.

      Actually this one reminds me of the white and green striped one she wears to Tara with Rhett right after their honeymoon. It's such a pretty dress with its little bolero. I think it's on screen for like less than 30 seconds! From images I've seen of the dress, it appears to be an elliptical shape as the back is much longer. The black and white "honeymoon" dress is also elliptical shaped but has significantly less volume. They get married in 1868 though so it's slightly off

    I love the emphasis of using what you had. I feel like so many people that are into historical dress are SO caught up in historical accuracy and this goes with this time period that they forget that most of the time, the average person 1) made all their own things and 2) the average person wasn't changing their fashion every single year so it IS historically accurate to mix and match and work with what you already possessed. You did your best to dupe things to be as fashionable as your finances allowed!
