AoE2 - Which Client Is Better?

  • I want to draw some comparissons between the two platforms, the focus in this video was on the features they offer and not the performance of the game itself! It's called Voobly vs Steam and not Voobly vs AoEHD because it's possible to still play on Voobly with your AoEHD installation, I'll likely make a video to cover this soon.

      @emerold_rd Před 7 lety +3

      so voobly has increased its performance? My experience with the voobly game client has been bad some years ago. In every lategame we would just lagg out and nothing would work so we had to end the game almost every time before even being nearly to an end ^^

    • @charlesoffenbacher
      @charlesoffenbacher Před 7 lety +5

      4.8 is a patch for HD. I'm not sure what was going for you on Voobly but people play huge 4v4s all the time with no problems.

    • @Tempires
      @Tempires Před 7 lety +3

      well if your internet sucks game will lag ofc. have been playing in voobly for years and not really bad experiences. just don't play with players with bad ping. Voobly servers have had issues but not very often
      also performance isn't same as having/not having lag. in original game you can play always single player without having any issues but in HD game isn't running smootly.same in multiplayer(and if someone has bad ping game in HD is totally unplayable).

    I play on steam to play the expansions, and because I started playing on steam first. I also think that if there will be any future growth and official development of the game, it will be on AoE2HD. As an addition, there are people I play with fairly regularly on Steam, so I really don't see any advantage for moving to Voobly at this point.

  • @Kxoe559
    @Kxoe559 Před 7 lety +37

    I play on steam mostly because I play expansions. I also play HD because I suck at the game (the theory is there, but not the practice) and because I can more easily get graphics mods.
    You really talked up voobly here, and it's true: voobly cares more about the game than microsoft :(. I have my reasons got sticking with steam, and it works fine for me (most of the time.)

    Thank you bro. I have the original disc version and I didn't know about Voobly until now. Couldn't play with some friends because the original disk version doesn't work on Windows 10 but this might just solve everything for me. And I can finally use my desktop's native resolution. You're a life saver

    • @candyman851
      @candyman851 Před 7 lety

      Yeah, Voobly's version of the userpatch is the only patch for the disk version that allows me to play it on windows 10. Since I already had the disk, and I don't have any particular friends playing the game on Steam or otherwise, Voobly was the obvious choice to allow me to play the game without additional cost.

    • @teutonicknight5664
      @teutonicknight5664 Před 7 lety

      Hasan Yusuf Patel wait, voobly has a patch for the disc version for windows 10? if so I might start using it. I have a pack that contains the first with its expansion and the second with the conquerors expansion too but can't use the second on windows 10 due to that safedisc bs

    • @candyman851
      @candyman851 Před 7 lety

      You can download the userpatch on its own from userpatch.aiscripters.net, which theoretically would fix the issues the disc version has on Windows 10, but I couldn't get it to work properly. Voobly automatically installs the same patch with some minor changes when you start the game for the first time, and that method worked for me.

    The reason I have not transferred to Voobly is that I cannot get overlapping hotkeys to work, like I have on steam. What I mean by that is that the key 'q' either builds a house or a barracks depending on if I have selected 'a' for economic buildings or 's' for military buildings first. This is very important to me because I like to keep the number the keys I use to a minimum so that they are very easy to find.
    I would love to be able to use Voobly, but the hotkeys are a game breaker for me.

    • @Chenla
      @Chenla Před 7 lety +6

      *****
      I prefer Steam, because if not for desync games are much more smoother and enjoyable, thanks new civs. Also on Steam there is no some nazi mod, which will bans you for literally everything, fault or not.
      Also most of ppl I know playing there.
      Besides I am mostly Singleplayer player, and Reskins or Custom Campaigns (sometimes better than original campaigns) are amazing.
      *****
      I know Gameranger is mostly about 'n00bs' and fast games.
      But I am a 'n00b' myself and kinda like fast game speed (only fast game speed, I HATE MICHI), on normal speed everything takes so long - I have no problem with that.
      Thats why I like Gameranger and Steam, they are more 'n00b' friendly, I know they are on Voobly too, but overall Voobly is more pro player oriented = competetive.

      The big problem with Steam is the unholy connection issues on multiplayer. Lag is real even with low pings.
      I am used to games like Starcraft and Warcraft 3 that are really fast paced. When I try AoE 2HD, I usually get frustrated by the lag that kinda kills my game rhythm. On Voobly, I didn't have that much lag, at least when playing nearby players (of course the game will lag if I, here in South America, try to play with Japanese players)

    I'm not new to anything of this, but it is a good comparison of most of the important things.
    Some things are still left out, but for me personally the biggest thing that divides Voobly and Steam are new content vs. lobby (with spectators, profiles, statistics, watching records etc.). I'm only missing the new civs, terrains, map types, animals etc. from AoFE and AOAK on Voobly without mods. I mean, if I just could install it like I did it with AoC 14 years ago and people would actually play it the same way and amount.

    I would prefer voobly but it seems you sometimes have to configurate your router in order to play there without extreme lag. Something that is not possible where i live. (since we can't acces the router.) I have played a few games on voobly and though their tech-support were very kind and helpfull they could not solve the problem.

      That's a fair point, I actually had a similar problem when I was at university and had no router access. There's still fast proxy issues inside of AoEHD as well though, they just aren't made as obvious. People will not play with you if you're Fast Proxy on Voobly because they know it causes lag, on AoeHD you'll have no problem getting a game with Fast Proxy... but then everyone will complain about how laggy it is and wonder why

    as someone who only in the past few months found out about hd and the fact that there is still a community this video left me with even more questions! I thought it was a given that I would play through steam, but it seems in many situations this may be disadvantageous (restarting games, amt of lobbies, friend/block list capabilities, etc). if I am understanding correctly, voobly is a client for the lobbies? A steam copy of aoe would not work because it would be hd? would a torrented copy work through voobly, as I've owned the original + conquerors for more than a decade but am sure I would not be able to find the disks(especially not keep a hold of both at the same time)?

    Great video Zak, good to see you back! I have been wondering this question for ages. I have AOE2HD with no DLCs and I also have The Conquerors, so I have the ability to play on both. Only one thing, on Steam, in order to spectate, you have to have bought one of the DLCs. A major drawback. As a player who just recently got back into AOE2. i'd rather watch 1900+ games and on Steam i would have to pay more. This is why I am transferring over to Voobly. One question though, are experts (2100+) willing to let noobs spectate. Or are they very picky? Thanks, Jack

    I have a question , spectator dashboard is no data mod, it's a visual 1, so why anyone develop that to steam version?
    And do you believe that steam will catch up on community and let people watch online lobbies as spectator / do not let spectator take a slot in the lobby / spectator won't lag the game at all because they are just and end point?
    In my opinion we are not such a big community to be dived into 2 platforms , we should be on one, and it should be steam because there are still developers there that making the game better and in 1-2 years it will be much better.
    Plus with a stronger community we can get more people starting to play this game and have more fun :)

    About the not being able to add a teammate after the game on steam: you can simply press Shift+Tab, go to view all players and then to recent games. Now it shows all the profiles of the people you just played with and you can simply add them now.

    I play on steam because there are some port forwarding problems on voobly, I know it's easy to fix it by going to the local website of your router and forward a port but I don't have acces to that (student home) so it happens that I can't play with players because of this. Also I like the expansions.
