  • OK, i'm going to admit, i was a bit worried and hesitant about this 24h MRE pack just because I thought a lot of the food would be a little unfamiliar to me... But should I have been? Find out!
This is the side channel to my main Lock Noob channel ( / locknoob .
Here I will be adding side content such as lock-related toys, retrospectives, detailed lock reassembly and even MRE reviews! I created this channel so I could put out fun content that might not interest my main audience, but i hope will still be enjoyed by others. Stay safe and happy picking!
If you would like to send me something, please use this address:
    Lock Noob
    PO Box 3428
    Bristol, U.K.
    BS6 9PQ
All items sent at senders own risk. Please also understand that while I try and feature things sent to me, I unfortunately can't feature everything and have long lead times.
I shouldn't have to say this but do not pick locks in use or locks that are not explicitly owned by yourself unless you have the express permission from their owners and that they understand the risk of damage picking may cause. ALWAYS keep it fun ALWAYS keep it legal. Don't make picking a crime.

I ate this dry food in the army. Almost all dishes should be stirred thoroughly to mix the fat. A soldier needs a lot of calories, so it's strange that the calorie content of some foods scares you. Vegetarians, models, etc. have no place in the Russian army.

Very true, when I was doing my service a few years back I would always eat as much as I could, the mess hall at the regiment always served to different main courses at lunch, I’d always grab a big plate of each as well as two pieces of bread and extra beans, I still managed to loose weight

The bloom is just fat separation due to it being stored in warmer condition than is ideal for the chocolate.
The fat separates and moves to the outside of the bar.
      Perfectly harmless.

There are a lot of people who love a spy, so you don't have to speak for everyone. It is added to the main dish to remove dryness. You can also rub leather things. It is very high-calorie and delicious, only a fool will eat fat in its pure form, it is spread on bread or added to a dish.

If you learn how to pronounce the letters of the Cyrillic alphabet, and understand that the vast majority of Russian words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled, with a few regular variations, such as unstressed 'o' sounding more like an 'a' (as you can find in Italian), and 'Г' sometimes being 'v', instead of a hard 'g', you can often work out what food components are. Especially if you know a few names in other European languages.
For instance, 'чай, кофе, сахар, соль, шоколад, гуляш, молоко, фрукты, картофель, бекон, банан' are roughly transliterated as 'chai, korfye, sachar, sol, shokalad, goolyash, molaka, frookti, kartofel, byekan and banan' are ' tea, coffee, sugar (think saccharine), salt, chocolate, goulash, milk, fruit, potato (like kartoffel in German), bacon and banana'.
Thanks for a fascinating review, Ash. 🙂👍

Sugar is a fast source of energy. It actually is very much appreciated in the field. In olden days they would have a cubbed sugar and it was close to a currency like cigarettes....
Also pilots in ww2/vietnam/korea wars had "emergency ration" which was a metal can that fits in a pocket and it was almost entirely sugar in different forms. Sometimes pure sugar....

  • @wnter3048

It is for emergency purposes for expaple if it's your last MRE and you have nothing to eat next several days then you got these tons of calories in a small can. You can also use it on your skin to prevent the frostbite in winter when you don't have something better. In peacefull times soldiers use it as a shoe polish make their boots shiny. :D

Interesting meals. I think the red drink, given to the illustration, might be rose hip. The "bacon fat" might be bacon flavoured lard, and would be much better on dark bread, together with some pepper, maybe salt (if it isn't salted), and some fresh onion rings. Don't know when I had lard on bread for the last time, maybe some 35 years ago. That's really some food for big guys in the field, marching or working hard. About 880 kcal per 100 g, definitely something to keep you going on a cold, hard day, and a hearty snack with that bacon flavour.

And don't forget to stir it up, unless you want your porridge be a brick with burned bottom.

@@sidenoob4995 I bought a couple of those IRPs in 2018 just to have some fun with my dad when we went to our country house for a weekend, that was enough food to sustain two large dudes for more than 24 hours, and serve as something to offset a fair amount of alcohol consumed. Plus, we heated those mains on the top of a fireplace, so we got them really nice and slightly crispy. And of course shpik was used for kasha reheating and later to fry some eggs. It's probably not healthy, but damn it makes everything taste better, arguably even better than using butter instead of oil for frying, and it's not like you use it every single day. And as a Russian, I can say that shpik wasn't something you could eat on its own, unless you really really need to. Proper salo, which I would recommend you to try, or make on your own, is crisp, straight from the freezer, cut in translucent slices, served with borodinsky bread, strong mustard, and pickled cucumbers/tomatoes, meanwhile shpik was just room-temp pork fat.

I recommend you use stove instead. because you can mix thing up on a pan rather than the microwave, the microwave it will draw out all the moisture and all it left is salt that why the food you eat look dry and salty. MRE and microwave shouldn't go together. At least use the stove if you want to heat it up and also keep the moisture because you can control the heat.

A Russian MRE? Oh hell yeah, this I've got to see! LOL You could probably use the foil lined pouch as a cup. I'm sure it acts as a moisture/water barrier for the MRE, but could be used as a pouch for water or mixing those powdered drinks.
PS - Stay away from the Chernobyl brand MREs. Just saying.

I usually fry up my kasha in some of the bacon fat, when I get the two in a ration. Using it to fry stuff is the only way I can use it. To eat it straight up? Man, you're tough.....
I've also used it on to fry up the US hasbrowns entree. That's one of my favorites, and a little bit of frying only makes it better (gets rid of that excess moisture...)
    Excellent review! Thank you!

The real thing is American MREs have a variety of things, texmex, italian, etc. With these rations, there is no variety, you eat the same thing everyday, and that's a quick way to make people miserable, regardless of quality.

There were some expired MRE's early in the war only, which barely means anything for an MRE, if the container wasn't pierced or opened. Oh wow, 1 year out of date, how will Russians cope!?!?!?
Meanwhile Ukrainians themselves were in awe when they captured one of these MREs and realized how much better they are than their own MREs.
