The cinematography just keeps getting better. Just that first minute: blending the shots of van at ground level, in van, drone footage - it really is something to marvel at. And I'm not even talking about the effort of searching for a good vantage point, setting up the tripod, hustling back to the van, driving off/past, hustling back to collect the gear... My goodness.
I've been sat here for the first 4.5mins of this video just baffled by the amount of work it must be for all that "B-Roll", the camera angles between each action of unpacking/setting up/etc.. Blows my mind sometimes when I stop, notice, and appreciate it. lol
@@RayneDr0ps Yea having a ascending drone shot while he is driving down the road. How is that?. In the US we have "line of sight" rules, and driving and controlling a drone at the same time? Does make for a great scene.
As a fellow creator and someone who has watched this channel grow for years - YES to Patreon (although I’d keep the sponsors going, too - they do no harm and provide a stable, consistent form of revenue). Love your stuff, mate - you’re a gem on this platform.
A tip for the issue with leaving the plastic cutlery inside the ridge monkey, put a tape tab (maybe using electrical tape for a bright colour) on the plastic insert that comes out a few cm from it and doubles back on itself, that way when the ridge money is closed the tape tab will stick out and will be easily noticeable that the insert is still inside 😄
I've been following your channel for years and never missed even one of them. I got so much inspiration from your videos. You'd have no idea how much it changed my life in a positive way. Thank you so much for that! Btw sponsors are ok for me:)

I don't mind the sponsors and would encourage you to continue with them. You will definitely make more cash and while thats not why you make YT videos, it does allow for more things like Van builds, international trips and new gear when its available and whatever other business costs you may have. Maybe for Patreon users, you upload an unlisted version of the video without the sponsored segment and potentially (if it isnt too much more work) that segment can be filled with extra video or something.

Your willingness to show warts n all, expose your mistakes, involve your followers in your learning..this is for me a big part your USP...
Hi, Found your channel when I retired just over 3 years ago having never watched or subscribed to CZcams. Only subscribe to two other photographic channels, so don't find the ads an issue. I have found your channel absolutely inspirational and a breath of fresh air. Have enjoyed your occasional vids about the more tech aspects too. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
I've supported a number of people on Patreon for years. It's quite a good way for people who produce quality work to get a steady income from viewers directly.
I've gotta say. The best part of the video was you putting the lettuce after heating the sandwich. The one thing I despise the most in food is warm sandwich lettuce. Big ups! Oh, and also the photos came out amazing as well.
I don't mind sponsors as long as the person supporting them is authentic. I do want an honest review if you review it. Additionally, if you LOVE the brand or LOVE the gear and use it in your daily life then heck yeah, that's awesome, proudly uphold their brand, they earned it. I am also a photographer and traveler so I'm always looking to see what other people in the field are doing because I don't have that opportunity IRL. I did subscribe to one photographer's patreon because I am a huge fan. They didn't stick with it but I liked the content. Because it's more niche you can talk more about your process, style, make it personal without having to reveal it all to a full audience. When I watch your videos I am mentally taking notes on how you travel most comfortably, how you edit, your thought process for compositions, what inspires you, and to take a little trip away into the woods in the middle of my work day- living vicariously. What might get me to subscribe is if you took a trip just for patreon and shot a video of that trip and took us along, then edited the photos at the end. I know people love having their own work critiqued too. But it is a lot of work. You'd have to produce for two platforms. If you feel any burnout now, it might increase, but being paid better is nice too. I love that you love the outdoors, chasing light, and doing your own thing, because I am very similar. And you're not afraid to be real, saying "I don't want to be here" yeah, I've been there many times so it's relatable haha. Sometimes nature provides and sometimes she doesn't but it's always worth an opportunity to be granted great conditions. Plus... if it were so easy, we'd all have fantastic shots all the time and it wouldn't be so thrilling haha.
I know this channel is mainly for photography, but it's also probably one of the most popular Mitsubishi Delica channels at this stage 😂 That's mainly what I'm here for anyway...
Patreon only works at scale, and you would have to crank out a lot more content to create the requisite value for your supporters, which is how you make it scalable. The biggest money you’ll make will always be from sponsorships and side gigs like paid training courses etc etc.
I’m sixty three and sort of envy you making a living doing what you do but I also realise there are pressures on you produce these videos, that’s life I’m afraid, nowt comes easy. I honestly don’t know the answer for you apart from winning the Lottery and in some weird way it gave me hope, I’m much closer to financial security and retirement than you so maybe in the not too distant future I can do what you do. That all said I absolutely devour your videos, in my opinion you’re the most straight up, no b.s. landscape photographer on CZcams so thanks for that Thomas and keep them coming.
100% I would gladly pay for a patron for your Chanel. If you ever do go that route I would sign up right away. Thank you for the videos and the inspiration Thomas!
Most of the time, unplanned content is much better than planned content. The more spontaneous it is for me, is better. It adds, dreamer, try just taking the camera out without any accessory. Trust me, it will free your mind and give you more fun.
Thank you Thomas, this was a wonderful video, having been a native PNW’er, now in Salt Lake City…now I want to get a Delica for my adventures! Shots were stunning!!!
The opening sequence of driving through the forest, with the cutaways to the van interior, was superb. I can only marvel at the work you out into your videos. The one image was great and worth the trip alone. I don't know much about Patreon but I'll look into it if that's the route you go down.
Man, I love this first 4 minutes just enjoying your trip. Your content is for me is about to make and drink a coffee in the mornings while watching you. Thanks for sharing your content. I’ve never Patreon anyone but I’m looking forward to support you there. Greetings from Brazil.
Thomas, love your content! Keep on! I don't mind sponsors. Especially if you only take sponsorships from products you endorse. I've found some awesome products from sponsorships on the channels I watch. And I don't really mind when they do the ad either. Again, love your work and enjoy watching your journey... the good and the bad! Because we all do the same but not all CZcamsrs are comfortable sharing the not so happy times.
As usual, loved the video, as well as the clip of Nick Carver at the beginning. You’re both so calming to watch. Personally, I’m not bothered about sponsors or ads, just do what you need to do to produce such fab content.
I don't mind sponsorships that creators are inspired by and excited about. There are things I would promote whether I'm paid or not. With that in mind, you could do both the sponsorships and Patreon though I get why you'd want to shy away from promoting on the channel. Your content is great as far as the quality and such; however, one of the things I like the most is how you tend to slow down and breath and enjoy the moment while the rest of CZcams is going faster with faster cuts, click bait, buildup with no pay off, and end up with more commercials than content. That's why I think a Patreon would be ideal. You could just do your content and not have to worry about all the CZcams-isms. That's something I would support for sure. Great work!
Thomas- I don't personally support any YT channel via Patreon for the simple fact that I have a wife and 4 kids that need my monetary support :). Having said that, and perhaps sounding a bit hypocritical, I think that Patreon is a wonderful idea and a wonderful way for fans and followers, who are able, to support their favorite channel. I also think that being sponsored is an excellent thing, as long as it pays the bills and allows you to take care of your family. You're an excellent personality with a lot of talent, and you create outstanding content, so any compensation you receive from a sponsor is earned by your talent. Likely you actually deserve far more than you receive. So don't worry about the advertisements. We'll keep watching!
I have not used Patreon or similar for any CZcams or podcast subscriptions to date. I am probably more frugal than the average person though. In all honesty, if I was to do Patreon it would be for a very small number of highly specialised channels of great interest. Your channel gets close but I probably do not learn too much new these days (been doing it poorly for 45 years). I use your exceptional channel as motivation because you are highly "Real" and likeable. Not fake! I wish you well and hope others will carry though with Patreon support for you. You deserve it.
We all know supporting your family is the utmost importance. So sponsorships don’t bother me, brand deals whatever affiliate links you name it, it’s the means to that end, and if you get to continue doing what you love for work than more power to you. CZcams is an amazing platform and I hope you stick with it. You could always try CZcams’s paid subscriber thing, can’t remember what it’s called. It allows “ fans” to help support what your doing and it keeps your attention on CZcams and not splitting your focus. Just an idea, I bet you could make a video about pretty much anything and we will watch it, lol.
Always love when you've a video out, great filming and I really enjoy the whole storytelling and the photography you do and create. So never stop Tom mate, love what you do 🙌👍🏼
As a big fan of your channel I want to support you and don’t mind sponsored videos, but I also like the idea of Patreon (I already support a couple of creators there). Especially if you offer extra content like you mentioned. Maybe some behind the scenes, how you prepare for a shoot, random geeky commentary on gear and photography, “ask me anything” sessions, etc. Love your work and videos👌🏻
We would follow you as a patron but don't mind the sponsors. It should be what's best for you! By the way, I hope your content NEVER changes. You are "must see TV" every Sunday. We love the "B" roll, getting ready for your trip, the cooking and eating - just seeing your entire day. You are so good about creating a story - every week. Also, letting us know how you feel during each outing - it's golden!! We recently did a road trip in the U.S. from the west coast to east and back again. You were talked about - over and over. Every time we saw a lone tree in a massive setting - it was a "Heaton" shot. Please keep doing what you are doing and we will follow!!
hi Tom. I sponsored through patreon a number of channels for a year at a time each. I don't expect something for nothing and I am fortunate to have a decent job. I came across your channel a few years back and that meant a huge back catalogue of your work for me to binge on, and I have, a lot. I would fully support that route if you choose to go that way, that said Im not against the sponsor thing either. we do all have the reality of making ends meet its a fact of life and you put a considerable amount of effort into this. I pay to avoid adverts on you tube so I manage to avoid all except the square space ones in bedded in creators videos. it helps people with less dough when those who have it chip in. best of luck whichever way you go.
I don't support anyone on Patreon...yet. :) But for you, I most certainly would! I've enjoyed your content for a very long time now. I also bought your 2022 calendar and will buy the next, and the next. Every Wednesday when I see you've uploaded a new video, I know that I'm about to have a good time! Thank you for continuing to inspire me. You've really helped change how I look at photography. It's a hobby that now brings me pure, genuine happiness. Thanks to you.
Love the channel and always look forward to the new releases on Wednesdays to see where you've visited. As for the sponsors, they don't bother me, it's just part of CZcams and worth it for me to access the great content you produce. As for Patreon, I don't support anyone via that platform. I do support Gregg Snell via his CZcams membership page, and find it simple enough to donate a few quid a month using this method. Hope that gives you another idea/option to explore.
I have been watching UTube for about 7 years and finally last year I signed up to give $10.00 each a month to pay for their channel and what they do to help their community. I don’t have a lot, but I would pitch in $10.00 a month to you because I have learned so much from you and your bloody entertaining!!!! Thanks and I enjoy this type of video from you just as I watched the van build. It doesn’t all have to be Balls to the Wall landscape photography, I’d love to see you do street photography and portraits. Throw in some Astrophotography and I’m in. Your a very interesting guy so hearing what’s on your mind is fun for me.
Loved this video per usual, Thomas. Well done. I don't mind the sponsorships on your videos Thomas. You keep its presence moderate and that ensures that the viewing experience is still great.
Another fine evening spent with Mr. T Fuego :-) never mind the photos for this one , it’s all about getting out and enjoying the outdoors after all !! Great sound design on this one too Pal !! I say go for the patreon
Many thanks for the videos they really are high quality and enjoyable. I’m personally happy with your current sponsor arrangements and it’s good when you introduce variety. I’m not sure about subscribing and to date have not gone with any on the patreon route. Many thanks again for al your great work
I am not bothered by the sponsors in the YT videos. I did get a calendar from you and enjoy supporting you that way. I liked this style video with less talking more background sounds
Great to see that your DIY camper van is working perfectly for the landscape photography. It's not always about the amazing photo shoots, the photographer van life looks also very enjoyable.
I feel your conundrum about sponsorships. Rather than Patreon, I support several CZcams photographers (including Adam Gibbs) via memberships. Depending on the channel, members get certain perks like the opportunity for image reviews, advance looks at videos, exclusive content such as tutorials, etc. Maybe look into that as well as Patreon. But yeah, I learned from the Northrups long ago how sponsors really pay CZcamsrs' bills compared to Adsense. You gotta do what you gotta do.
Stick with the sponsors. I love your videos, watch every single one all the way through. If i had to pay though I wouldnt im afraid. Like most people between sky, netflix, spotify, disney Im subscription maxed out. I would happily watch an additional ad if needed, they dont bother me.
We have a saying: one should not saw off the branch on which one sits. If I were you, I would continue with the sponsorship and at the same time ask the users for support to find out whether the support idea works. I am in! :)
Don't mind the ads and the sponsored content. We all need to make a living and that's one way of doing it on YT. Trying to always comment and give thumbs on your video, even if I don't particularly enjoyed it. I don't currently subscribed to anyone's patreon and not sure if I ever will.
You do an outstanding job and I always wonder how CZcams really works out for people. I have not supported anyone via Patreon or the newer “donate icon”. Yours is one of the few channels that I find good enough to consider supporting directly.
I understand Patreon but there are so many great channels that I watch I don't feel I can support them all, however much I would like to so I am more than happy to watch sponsored content.
Mate, get some Permethrin and spray all the material surfaces in the van.... Midges hate it and they'll stay away. I spray all my bushcraft gear and the midges and ticks avoid my gear like the plague.
Hi Thomas, the most important thing is that you make a decent living and continue to be fulfilled in what you do. I have no issue with the sponsors as they are usually relevant and the messages don't last long, I have found that being made aware of for example squarespace has been really useful. As regards Patreon I think we are all feeling our way into this new world, content providers and consumers and I do feel that if Patreon becomes common I will have to choose who to follow and it will inevitably be a finite list. Apart from all that I cannot see a circumstance where you wont be in the upper part of the upper quartile of my favourite landscape photography vloggers.... Thanks for the entertainment and inspiration.
I love hanging out with you. Maybe I'll get some tea before watching your next video. CZcams has the option for a monthly membership. I have a patreon membership for about 3 people. I'm all for it. If I can enjoy your work, paying for one coffee a month is no big deal.
It's an interesting conundrum about sponsors vs. subscriber base (Patreon, et al). Although I would certainly be willing to support your channel via subscription, personal experience has taught me that, at the end of the day, most people won't do that. First it will only work with people already familiar with your work. Who's going to pay for something they know nothing about? The second difficulty is that your videos have been free for so long, I think a lot of people - casual 'fans' - would push back at having to pay. Again, personal experience. On the other hand, being free of sponsors gives you a lot more freedom. In the end, Thomas, you have to do what you have to do to support your family. Make use of any opportunity you have to monetize your efforts, and don't worry about the haters. Most importantly, please keep up the good work! Your videos are amongst the best in the genre, and I look forward to each weeks installment. I am, indeed, a fan!
The howling wolves sound sample at night always gives me a chuckle. Almost like a running gag now, isn't it? Also nice to see you watching a @nickcarverphoto video!
That sandwich is making my mouth water! I can sympathize about the midges. We call them "no see ums" they were horrible when I went up on the mountain a couple weeks ago. Hopefully they'll all be gone when I go again! The photo was nice. Maybe when the weather is better and the bugs not so bad you can get more photos from this spot.
I definitely do not mind the sponsored videos. Personally I would not be able to shell out the money for patreon. Although I have to admit ignorance as to how much it would actually cost. I like to watch a specific group of photography videos each week and heaven forbid if they all become pay to view. Thus I support other ways when possible like buying the book. In the end, you have to do what's best for you and yours. I hope you stick around youtube for quite some time.

Great Tom I say go for it
I enjoy how much you play with sounds in your vids! I can tell you too!
That owl shirt is money!!!
Patreon - Do it! You have tons of fans who would love to chip in! Thanks for the great videos! Cheers from Sweden
Great cinematography intro Tom, not just a landscape photographer then!
Do love your stuff enjoy your time away in Scotland
Always love when you've a video out, great filming and I really enjoy the whole storytelling and the photography you do and create. So never stop Tom mate, love what you do 🙌👍🏼
You need the Outdoor Revolution Lumi-Mosi camping light, I have two in my van and they catch the midgies brilliantly. Another great video. Thanks.
It taste batter than it looks !?! Bro it looks amazing, i'de love to try those !!
Do both mate, have the sponsorships but also do the patron as an extra for people that want that extra content,
We would follow you as a patron but don't mind the sponsors.
Thank you. 👍📷😎
It's Art.
Why the men are happy doing this kind of stuff, going to the woods and chill? Man!!! I love it
felt like a short film! loved the atmospheric sounds
Have you thought about heading over to Knapdale? The place is a hidden gem - all forests and fjords. Highly recommended for photography
Always enjoy watching Thomas making his Foods while camping!!
I say go for the patreon
am just pleased to see you get midge’s in ya van thought it was just me they followed ! 😎
Many thanks for the videos they really are high quality and enjoyable. I’m personally happy with your current sponsor arrangements and it’s good when you introduce variety. I’m not sure about subscribing and to date have not gone with any on the patreon route.
Many thanks again for al your great work
Lovely
I am not bothered by the sponsors in the YT videos. I did get a calendar from you and enjoy supporting you that way. I liked this style video with less talking more background sounds
I think that could be a good shift buddy, I think people would definitely support you through there! Loved the shots at the start👍🏻
Been following your channel for years. You are an inspiration. And I am a fan!
Great to see that your DIY camper van is working perfectly for the landscape photography. It's not always about the amazing photo shoots, the photographer van life looks also very enjoyable.
Yeah, I'm really happy with it and it does the job nicely.
Love it
You do an outstanding job and I always wonder how CZcams really works out for people.
I’ve got to find campgrounds like the ones you visit…they all have cameras set up when you pull in!😉
Hi Thomas, the most important thing is that you make a decent living and continue to be fulfilled in what you do.
Thomas - get an Aeropress for your coffee. It will change your life! It makes the best, smoothest coffee I've ever had.
Do sponsored AND patreon. It's perfectly understandable that you need to earn a living, and your fans will support you either way. Go for it.
Just some thoughts for abstract photography bucket list… the Bungle Bungles out from Broome in Australia.
Great work there Sir.... love that filter system
Awesome work
My next big thing, A filter system like you have !!!
