At the 2023 CTWC, over 100 Classic Tetris pros gathered at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo to vie for 48 seeds. Qualifying consisted of 2 hour attempts where players would try to rack up as many great scores as possible. In a 48-seed bracket, the Top 16 seeds earn a bye out of Round 0, while the bottom 32-seeds compete for a spot in Round 1.

#CTWC2023 - Hry
For those wondering why Eric's performance was like this, he didn't grind NES Tetris as much in 2023 and also found out that his controller had a jittery internal component on CTWC weekend that caused him to miss inputs. Fractal verified this with his roll training tool. So Eric unfortunately wasn't able to play anywhere near his true skill level. The same thing happened to Myles in 2022 when he was a top player but his controller crapped out in quals, causing him to fall into the Silver Bracket.
It really looked to me like he was having controller problems. Some of those misdrops didn’t make sense for him. And his 5s were a near disaster at times.
Yeah, I can confirm it was definitely a combination of both. More details on the jitter: it basically means that there's an RNG roll on whether or not an input registers which is determined by the exact moment the NES polls the controller. Even if inputs register 99% of the time, that 1% can cause you to make a crucial misdrop. Throughout all of CTWC weekend I was constantly getting +1s and -1s and had to react on the spot to most of them.
@@EricICX Had you confirmed at the point of playing this match that you had the controller issue or had you just known in your head? Did you check with the rolling tool after the game or before?
It is nuts how well you played even despite the jitter, makes it all that more impressive, really! Too bad it made the post 29 play near impossible :(
@@tinymarsracing It's very difficult to get even one controller to work, and I didn't want to put in the hours to get another working.
@@Serggiyo I found out 5 minutes before this match.
Eric getting eliminated in round zero was something I never expected. This is gonna be an interesting tournament.
A lot of shocks already
Sharky has the potential to become the best commentator in the game!
His voice is really soothing to listening as well
True! Exactly my thought...
already is
Thank you!
Awesome commentary. Great flow without overshadowing what's going on. "Not the ideal topography." Classic. Keep up the great work.@@ITZsharky1
Oh my days! This year's CTWC just started hot from the rip! Even Jonas would have enjoyed the hell out of this!
Yeah the most insane round 0 ever
i find it amazing how entertaining competitive tetris is. Looks unreal how good they manage to play tetris, it is amazing.
A nail-biting ending!!! This is just the beginning!
Koster won the game with incredible tapping skill, and then his cap fell off lol
The thing that made EricICX world champ was his stellar long-haul post-29 play. It makes sense that the double kill screen would put a lot of pressure on him. Also, every year people just keep getting better. It is totally insane how good everyone is now. I play DAS and still haven't maxed. These kids are animals.
I think, it's more of a retirement curse that got him. His consistency with rolling was definitelly weaker than a year ago. After all, the quals shouldn't be that much different with lvl 39 cap and in no game here he actually used his killscreen play, despite taking 200k in singles and doubles being preferrable to topping out.
His builds are really ugly and at times confounding. He really relied on being able to line out forever on 29+ play. All he had to do previously was get to 29 and play forever. His skill set isn’t to consistently Tetris and build high and clean with this new “real” kill screen.
@@Rude_i_Wredne You make a good point. Could very well be.
@@Rude_i_Wredneit was a combination of him not playing much and his controller having issues. We used fractals roll tool to verify the controller issues too
But he didn't even come close to the super kill screen, so I don't see how that would effect his mentality.
The piece sequence at game 3 where Hepps digs out, tucks in the one long bar and tetris with the next, almost seems likes he rigged the pieces xD too lucky!
I'm sure he will say it was intentional! (27:18 for anyone wondering)
it was intentional
Oh the Topography!
YES! It wasn't ideal!
🤣@@ITZsharky1
Crazy games! Fair play to all 4!
Una de las mejores partidas q e visto!!👍🏻👍🏻
Vandweller, The 'Paris accord' and the 'Kyoto agreement', Sharky 'contours and topography'.
Yup vandy makes references and I try to use words that aren’t normally used 🫡
Eric beat himself in that game. So many misdrops and burn opportunities that did him in. Great job to Koster for being consistent enough to move forward. He def put the pressure on the entire time.
agree that he beat himself. Playing at that level with a controller that was randomly missing outputs because of malfunction was phenomenal
How far has this tournament come?!!! Everyone's so skilled, it's anyone's game anytime!!
this match was the definition of insane, with a double decider, and Eric getting out in round ZERO! This was just insane, and easily the best match so far.
that last game was phenomenal!!
Geez that first game one was just crazy it was so close!
You get Seed 17, facing off seed 48 round 0. Hoping it'll be ok. Oh. Seed 48 is last years winner... ouch...!
This was Intense! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Eren & Hepps are great guys!
Wild talent 😊
2 great games
It says a whole lot about the quality this year when the world champion both qualifies bottom of 48 and eliminated first round
KNOCKED OUT ROUND ZERO?????? GOOD LORD
just realize koster clutch the killscreen tetris and max in the last game
Unfortunately Eric played with some many misdrops. Better luck next year.
The back and forth movement of Eric's pieces even at level 18 was very awkward so I knew from the beginning he had hardware issues. The fact he chose to play nevertheless and got into the gold bracket is astounding, especially with almost no practice this year. With a proper controller and a bit of practice, he definitely could've won again
Tapper supremacy
close one
Is the Aquafina watter bottle on the announcer's table intended to be product placement?
Lol not intended. But a water sponsor would be cool… as long as it’s not Dasani…
@@ITZsharky1 I'm partial to Poland spring
gg
How did Eric get 48th seed?
He only got one max in qualifying
Man, what happened?
seems like Eric's board manage is leaning too much on the right
First ever reigning champion eliminated at first match?
I believe this is the first.

@@seanburier6972Jonas was not the defending champion in 2019, but yeah that was a sad exit
Sorry I forgot about it@@DanVWeller
Eric misdropped soooo fucking often :(.
Watching him was like dying in slow motion.
This is statistically the worst ever performance by a defending champion.
I mean Multiple maxes in a set, isn't that bad, but also controller issues and no practice really hurts.
Definitely not. Pre-Rolling this would have been an unbelievable set in terms of scoring.
i'm late but he means this is the first time a defending champion has been eliminated this early
we haven't had a year where the defending champion hasn't qualified yet
this doesn't make any sense, how canthe greatest player that casually reach 2M+ score lose so easily like that ???!!!!!!
Wow so Eric is officially the worst champion to defend his title
2014 - Jonas finished 2nd place
2015 - Harry Hong finished top 4
2020 - Joseph finished top 8
2022 - Dog finished top 4
2023 - Eric lost in round 0...
Wtf happened to Eric? Too many missed drop on the left. He used to be my favourite player.
Eric's controller had a malfunction
Where are the asian commentator guys?
James Chen and Chris Tang will be commentating round 1
Thanks, very good. Others are also good but I need those asian guys for the og tetris feel!
@@masterlup I appreciate the compliment on my commentary
I respect that Tang and Chen started all this and will of course do the late round matches.
But aside from starting this all they have also really amassed a large stable of great commentators for this event so they should use that crew a lot in the early rounds. And surely that is the plan from the start.
@@stevebollinger3463 definitely you’ll hear a lot of new voices in the early rounds but come top 16 you’ll hear very familiar voices but no spoilers from me 🤫
Rolling ruined the competitive Tetris scene, just ban gloves.
Fractal plays without gloves, and other players could just adapt. I personally think rolling elevated competitive Tetris to a new level and you’ll see that as the tournament progresses
