Making Hardwood End Grain Drinks Coasters

  • Woodwork video. A friend of mine donated me some lengths of hardwood - oak, mahogany and teak (I think). I used them to create these drinks coasters to give as Christmas gifts. I got about 36 coasters in total out of the laminated block of wood - 8 sets of 4 coasters. I had a few issues - the glue up was tricky and it took a while to find a finish I liked, but they looked good in the end!

I made some coasters using firewood once. My neighbour has lots of firewood, mainly pine and fir but also some beech, ash, birch and poplar. He had an apple tree trimmed and applewood is actually a really desirable beautiful hardwood. All I did was cut the log into slices across the end grain like I was making a plate for instance. They still are holding up well and they look great with the bark still on

Nice project and a good video, I use OSMO an oil and wax finish, 2 coats and then finish with beeswax, OSMO comes in different finishes and colours.

Love your projects and channel. I teach high school woodshop and am always looking for new projects. We mill our own lumber out of salvaged logs and use the lumber in our shop.

Wow, a high school woodshop!!! Not in my area, high schools here are ignoring teaching workshops of any type.

turned out well in the end, i'd say polyurethane varnish would have done the job but always good to use up whatever is around if possible!

I do a similar type of projects making bowls and cutting boards, and the best finish I found for them is called Butcher Block oil and finish from a company named Watco. like you I tried several different finishes not getting a nice look for the grain try this I think you'll be happy.

You could've just glued up the layers individually and then glue the layers together once they're dry, that would've saved you a lot of headaches.

Can you do a long term review on your bandsaw please for any prospective purchasers. Thx.y

+mark church I don't think I'll get round to doing a full review to be honest. I am happy with it however the only thing I would advise is that apparently Clarke make the exact same bandsaw for about £100 less so that's worth looking in to if you're interested. It's the CBS350

You can make out teak simply by smelliing it : it has a smell of ... yes, teak oil !Plus it is very oily under the finger.

I'd like to try to make some coaster myself of some pieces of (scrap)wood and I have been watching some videos about the topic recently.
From other CZcamsrs, your more recent ones, etc. And now I ran into this, your older video. There are so many ways to make coasters........
    Thanks for sharing.
How is it possible that you have, at the end of this video, which is now 3 years old, a pop-up to a video that you made recently?

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  Před 5 lety

you've built some beautiful coasters.. at 1:48 you say you never got the pieces correctly...i've seen people apply the glue and spread it enenly with a brush..i hope that helps

Hi, can I use part of your video to my compilation of the most interesting woodworking projects ?

  • @electricchurchmedia1187

If you would have sprayed water on them and let the grain raise than sand before finishing the end grains would have poppies better and not been so dull with the earlier finishes
