I also LOVE mine - but then again I'm a huge G-Shock square aficionado. It's so funny you bring up the bathroom story - that's actually how I broke my Apple Watch (which I no longer have). I went to the bathroom at work and on the way in, maybe were exiting so moved to the side and smacked the corner of the watch on the corner of a wall that had porcelain tiles. it instantly cracked the crystal from one side to the other. Good thing I had Apple Care - for a small free I got it replaced and sold the replacement watch as new. Glad I gave it a chance but never liked the Apple watch - like you said, to me it's also not a real watch.

I'm not using the bluetooth function either. Neither using the autolume.(But did set the light from 2 to 4 seconds). Love the multiband 6, solar and the worldtime. But above all, I just love the look of a full steel square G Shock. I bought it 6 month's ago, and wear it almost every day.

Love mine and don’t like my Apple Watch. Apple watches bug me because you have to wake the screen and you have to charge the thing up. In a couple of years I will still love my full metal G Shock and it will still look cool. This time next year my Apple Watch will be out of date.

Lee Harding This is why I have stopped wearing my Apple Watch and now wear a metal g Shock. No charging needed and I never wanted a bunch of notifications on my wrist. Love this square for daily wear! It’s a tool that tells time as I need and I use the timer often for tasks. Plus needed the multiple time zones.
Plus the Apple Watch software becomes obsolete/non compatible after a few years. I felt like I wasted money on two stainless steel models that won’t even last 10 years. It was an extension of my iPhone which I understand but do not need.

This is a heirloom watch and with all the scratches and dings, whoever inherits it will appreciate it as a unique piece of you that is hard to replicate. Part of the reason I bought it, Another part is, It is a rock solid dependable time piece for the date and time. I also travel the world often and being able to use my phone to adjust locations is a huge plus. I have the JDM 5610, It does mostly the same things. But being a rubber strap, I never fully trusted it to break at some point and I dont want to carry a back up strap. Fully worth price paid. Even if you own a Rolex or Patek, You know those watches require maintance and make you a target for theft as well. Thats why many people with Rolexes make this their EDC. It's a bargain. Time to me is very important.
Also, Having to charge my watch immediately disqualifies it for EDC. As much as I travel, I am lucky if i can charge my phone, My watch? Forget about it. Not doing it. I had a Apple Watch, I used it for excercise...Than I sold it. I don't miss it. If Apple can perfect a solar powered all steel version for $500 I would buy it immediately. Most likely the steel 5000 would still be on my wrist though.

I am 1 year into watch collecting and already have a dozen of G-shocks. After several resin squares I felt that it's time for a metal square. So I got this model a few weeks ago.
I don't want any of my stainless steel watches to be scratched. Still I know they will be more or less after a while unless they remain unused in the box. But I did not get a single of my watches for that purpose. A watch is made to be used, and it's just to accept that scratches is a part of a SS watch life circle.
I am now tempted to get another steel square, with negative display. The purple-blue Tokyo twilight version is very attractive.

Quite on the heavy side but i just love how it looks, the nostalgic design and it does get a lot of complements. The solar makes up for the accuracy of time as it automatically hooks up to an atomic clock and worryless about batteries. I'd choose to wear this for the long term.. But, but, what can I going to do with all the watches I have ? They are a vintage dress watch, a pilot, a diver, a field watch, and a chronograph sport watch combination ,and all of them still under good working condition and "ain't broke "....😂

The part where you where talking about that it is all scratched up and will probably get more scratched up, well thats Ok in my book, does not bother me at all with G Shocks getting scratched up because you can replace the bands and bezels on these really cheap and easily. Thats the great thing about G Shocks is that the inner case of the watch is always covered by an outside bezel that is removable weather it is resin or in this case metal, either way it can be replaced to make the watch new again! I myself do have this exact model and I get what you are saying about the price vs personal value and also maybe even sentimental value as in I can remember back when I was a kid in the 80's, I had one of the first squares that I got back in like 1985 and those back then had the screw down back case just like these, so in my book this is the most true style to the original but with the newer tech such as the Solar/Atomic and Bluetooth! Love it! Maybe some people wouldn't think anything is special about this model, but if you are a true G Shock Fan and avid collector and you had one of the originals back when you were a kid like me, then you will appreciate and definitely need this in your collection!

FYI- Sapphire will shatter during the g shock torture tests, Mineral will withstand the pressure and not shatter. Thats the reason. Do you find the screws that hold the bracelet to the lugs have some play in them? I just picked this up and noticed this right away.

    • @watchreport
      @watchreport  Před 4 lety +4

I never noticed any issue with screws that hold the bracelet to the case nor any of the screws-where did you get yours from? As far as sapphire, Casio released late last year two titanium versions of this watch, with sapphire. The price? $1600. Also, it is a bit of a myth about sapphire shattering. Sapphire in most quality watches these days is pretty thick, and it would be rare for it to be shattered. Check out the Inox from Swiss Army. They use sapphire and while I feel a lot of their claims and tests are marketing, they have proven to be extremely tough watches.

There was a time when Rolex was an affordable tool watch but unfortunately, that time has past. After nearly forty years gshock has reached a point in their storied career where they can produce a premium timepiece that people are lining up to buy. It's a gshock so we all know it can take the abuse but just because it's tough doesn't mean we should beat the crap out of it.
I own the gold version but I don't wear it during high risk activities, I have plastic gshocks that are better suited for those tasks. These metal gshocks are premium timepieces meant to impress and even though they can take the abuse these models are jewelry.

The stainless steel models are still tool watches, but nobody dares use them that way anymore because of their value.
The higher end versions of the G-Shocks are in that category as well now. You're not using a $4,000 MR-G as a tool watch either even though it still is a tool watch.

Work out the cost per day over that period of ownership and it works out to be a pretty cheap watch for what you are getting. If your battery level is low or almost empty after a month, you probably need to leave it in bright sun on a window for a few days, maybe a week. It takes the metal squares over 150 hours in sunlight to reach full charge, but it's easy to keep it high after that. I give mine a day in the window every month or so and it stays high.

Thanks. This watch is long gone, and I don’t care about scratches. I believe in this video I talk about hitting it against a door handle. The point was more about my perception of Gshock watches and how I use them and not about scratches to a watch. I don’t baby my watches but to me a Gshock has always been a $200 or less watch that I can beat the piss out of and not worry about and having a $500 G that looks all beat up doesn’t click with me at all. I wish they would make these with a rubber bezel. Or even better, a ceramic bezel or even a hard coated stainless steel. That would then give it the toughness of a Gshock with the rest being all metal and having the cool look. That are still extremely popular though, including the titanium ones at 3 times this price. I’m just not the target market for these.

Not really. The bezel is brushed stainless. You can take a brush pen or pad to it, but you wouldn’t match the grain and it would be worse looking than the scratches in my opinion. The reality is this watch is weird.
It’s a G-Shock so it can take abuse but it will show every ding and scratch if you use it like a regular G, and yet it’s expensive but doesn’t have a sapphire crystal unless you get the $1200 titanium version.

P.S. Lumi Nova is the parent compound of both Superluminova and Lumibrite. Seiko holds a patent and trademark on Lumibrite, and Superluminova is a Swiss compound. I find Seiko's application of Lumibrite to be more effective than Superluminova, glowing brighter and lasting longer.
