Camping Under My Poncho in the Rain

- I got to camp under my poncho tarp in a bit of rain and I’m still unsure how this works as a multipurpose piece of gear.. as far as I can tell there’s no way to erect it without getting wet - so extra waterproofs are required. Does it defeat the object? 🤔 A lovely night in the woods nonetheless :D

Love the sound of rain on a tent or campervan roof. Find it really relaxing.
Yeh it's really lovely isn't it 🌧 I caught a thunderstorm last night, a lil dream come true for me 😍
@@WildBeare I was in the Lakes a couple of years ago, near Honister Pass, and there was a massive electrical storm for hours, starting not long after midnight, it was pretty awesome. It adds a dimension to it that is difficult to explain with words. Always remember as a kid loving it when there was a storm and wanting to be out in it rather than hiding indoors.
Been following your videos for a year or so btw, great content.
Yep, totally agree. I'm (temporarily) living in a caravan at the moment and I love the sound of the wind and rain outside drumming against the roof. Add in some thunder and lightning like the night before last and I'm in heaven!@@jayanator

I’m really sad today. For quite a few reasons, all of it, just past stuff sitting heavily on my heart. I have already binged most of your videos, and am thankful today to be watching this one. Your voice and your adventures bring me a sense of peace, I think I’ll go back and binge some more. I wish I had the courage you do, to take these adventures, it must be so good for the soul.
I'd bet money that you absolutely have the courage 🙂
@@frankmurphy5 This made me smile, thank you Frank 🥹
@@siobhanrose1680 😁
Heyy Siobhan, I'm so sorry for the heavy stuff. I hope it lightens for you soon 💚
As @frankmurphy5 has already said, you absolutely do have the courage
Sleeping wild has done so many good things for me, it's helped me heal from a lot of stuff, restore peace to my life and improved my confidence
Maybe have a look at semi-wild or nearly-wild camp sites to start off, see where it takes you
Much love & big hugs sister 🤗
You can do it lass 😊
I feel anxious setting off too, but just start putting one foot in front of the other and you'll be doing it!
I cant remember the last time I felt peace like i do when i am in my tent looking up at the stars in a dark sky, hearing the owls and the other sounds of nature.
I cannot think of any other youtuber who is so endearing, wholesome and heartwarming while providing great content.
Just Alex springs to my mind
He's a lovely young man 😁
Aw thank you so much, I've had a tough few weeks and your comment made me smile :) so glad you like my lil videos, hope you have a lovely week 🌿🐻

I hope things are okay with you, Claire.@@WildBeare
I include Claire in my prayers 🙏 😊every morning along with the few family members I have and a couple of friends. There have been many times that beautiful smile an kind voice have pulled me out of the deepest blue funk so I feel I owe you a debt of gratitude Claire thank you for all you do and I hope life starts treating you better 😊
Great video as always. Since the poncho is lightweight, maybe carry 2 of them. Stay under 1 while you set up the other. Then you would have a spare if something went wrong or use the second one to cover your pack. Just a thought.
Thanks! Oohh.. this is interesting.. I'm thinking I could use the other as the ground sheet maybe. Great suggestion thank you :D
I agree it's a good idea, though it does sort of negate it's purpose - what's the advantage of that vs just wearing a poncho and taking a tarp?
Though on the other hand what advantage does a tarp have that a poncho-tarp doesn't? Only cost i guess? So perhaps if you can afford a 2nd poncho-tarp you might as well take it instead, gives you ever so slightly more versatility/contingency.
That's the military way
A poncho is pretty much a tarp with a hoody in it. Carry 2 ponchos, or a poncho and a tarp? 🤔
Perhaps use a regular tarp poncho and carry an ultra light weight plastic bag one to temporarily wear whilst setting up some form of lean to.
This is the first time I've said anything like this about anyone but you are an inspiration. God Bless and protect and be with you. X.
Another fantastic video Claire. Nice to see you still getting out in the fresh air, and entertaining us all. You keep us smiling with all your adventures. Thank you. 🏕🏕
I've slept under a poncho before. I had an old army one that I used to stretch over my fishing bed. Excellent bits of kit!
I’ve just discovered your videos and they are so cathartic. I’m not really an outdoorsy guy but your enthusiasm, energy and effervescence has inspired me to hike/camp more. What a delight. Thank you
Ah thanks! Happy trails friend 🌿 Thanks for watching :)
I love your sense of humor! 😂 Thank you for the smiles on a rainy Monday. ❤ Have a great week Claire ✌️🌲⛺️
Thanks Rick you too :)
Hello Claire Bear. Glad to see that you're enjoying yourself, despite the weather.
Heyy, thanks it's been an interesting summer hasn't it 😄🌧🌧🌧🌧
@@WildBeare It certainly has been. I just wish that I had more chance of getting outside. The weather has just been all over the place.
Just what I needed today. Another great video and adventure. Thanks for sharing. I think that poncho tarp is pretty cool.
Claire has literally saved my life. Love her videos
"Ace Ventura bit" i think im in love!!! 😂🥰
It’s just gone 6am. I let my gorgeous little dog out, and while I was waiting for her I heard my world wake up. So lovely! Then she came back in and I went back to bed. I live in the country, in Australia. The sounds of birds going “I’m awake, are you awake?” And all it’s neighbour's are saying, “Good morning Mate, yes I’m awake” in response then calling out to their neighbours “Are you awake” is quiet an orchestral ‘competition’, absolutely delightful.
Amongst all of your great camping skills and other talents, you are an excellent videographer. That shot of the moon rising behind the trees and the stars rising through that open patch of sky at 7:30 is an absolute thing of beauty. Thank you for your wonderful content and I am already looking forward to your next video!
Heyy, thank you so much :D I'm a photographer by trade and I'm loving learning and extending it out to videography. Hope you're having a lovely week 🌿🐻

Yaay! New video ☺️ So fun and inspiring to watch your videos. ❤
I look forward to your videos more than any other CZcamsr, Claire. Thanks for going out in all kinds of weather and sharing with us. xoxo
Terrific video! It was fun to see you camping with minimum equipment, even if you ended up going a tad to minimum. All part of the learning curve, thanks for sharing the experience!
Thank you :D yes the tarp poncho is a lil too minimal for me I think, still fun to try though! Have a great week 🌿🐻
You never cease to amaze me always learning something new
what a whole hearted cheerful video to stumble upon!🥰 subscribed for future adventures 🙃
As always a wonderful, relaxing video. Thx Claire
'I've been having a little think' might be the cutest thing I have ever heard 🥰
Agreed, I also love it when she says 'wonky donkey' 😂😂😂
We love your playfulness and sense of humor ❤
Thanks Clair for the complete gear list used in this video. Seeing you use gear in real life helps me better understand it’s pros and cons as I make decisions on what things I might want to buy.
You're supposed to turn the face opening of the poncho down toward the ground only, makes a big difference. Now you either tie it back to lift the middle a little, or if that's impossible you put a rock or two in the hood so it stays closed and pulled down outside. Pulled inside like you had it will drip on you when it collects enough water; you usually become aware of that waking up in the middle of the might to a wet sleeping bag. It's not meant to substitute for a tarp or tent but in an emergency it will keep you from becoming dead.
I bought this exact same Poncho two weeks ago . Purchased it for bikepacking an uktralight setup and that its longer than many light tarps 😅 , have set it up outdoors using a variety of methods and i reckon its could be quite good .
Its been so dry in recent weeks not had chance to test it in rain so watchin you test it has given me some great info 👍especially the slugs 😂
always glad to find a new video waiting for me from this young Lady - it always brightens my day, thanks as always for sharing the adventure with us all! 🤓

The Ace Ventura reference 😂😂😂 this lady is quickly becoming one of my favorite humans!
Well, good effort. I applaud your willingness to try things "outside the box". I always enjoy your videos, Claire. You always seem to have a good bit of fun.
Thank you for sharing your experience!!
Hey there Claire :) Yet another stellar video you've put together here! That was a great lil' setup you made... nice and simple 👍 I personally love these minimalistic type trips... not too much gear to deal with, which is always a huge plus! The "bits and bobs" always come in quite handy as well I must admit 👍
I hope that the rest of your week is absolutely amazing my friend! Stay wild.... 🐻 -John
This was immensely amusing, poking your head out of the Doo-Dah, simply made me smile and laugh somewhat. Loved it. I didn’t know you were a single mom, until I read your info on your home page. I must say your child must be very lucky.maybe sometime in the future we might see you camping with your child. You always bring peace to my hectic life when I watch. Ty for your videos😊😊😊
That’s was most enjoyable. To watch, it shows some people just need the basics to be happy in such a bad storm. God Bless You
How you enjoy your camping is a puzzle to me but it shows so well in your vlogs. I enjoy comfort now at 75 but love watching your videos with the wife and grandson.😊👍👍👍
Thank you @wildbeare. I am always in a good mood after watching your video's.
I don’t know why, but I love the videos when you’re camping and cooking in the rain ❤
I love rain on a shelter, feels so cosy 💚
yes, that's very relaxing, I sometimes see similar videos from a Korean woman. Always pitches a tent somewhere and then cooks something. I think it reminds us of vacation

😁👍🐻 Brilliant claire.. loved the humor which is essential out in that weather trying to make 1 a shelter 2 a youtube video. 👍 Basic multi use item is the poncho and when wildcamping or stealth camping. Keeping your kit lightweight and useing multi use items is a must.. Looked nice and cosy again. Loved this claire. 😁😁👍

Thanks for another video! I just wanted to say, you have inspired me to get out and camp under the trees and stars in random locations this year. Really have opened my eyes to many adventures so a big thanks! ❤
Ahh yay this is totally amazing 😍 sleeping wild has done so much good for me. I hope it does so many good things for you too 💚 happy adventuring, friend
@@WildBeare It really has! One of the most memorable moments so far was waking up in my hammock to Stags bellowing in the forest and rubbing the trees with their antlers.
Your love for nature really comes through in this videos. As many others have said, they are very wholesome. Carry on adventuring and I'll see you on the trail! 💚
Camping is a constant learning experience. 👍 Happy learning.
Oh i love this video so much
Oh, Claire! How you always make me laugh. A few seconds in, when you had that poncho over your pack, for some unknown reason the name, ‘Quasimodo’ leapt to mind. 😂😂 Watching you poke your head out of that puckered up little ‘observation port’ almost had me in hysterics. I nominate you for some kind of comedy award. 🤷🏻♂️ You are so funny - but without trying to be. Love you and love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Heyy, haha thanks! It's kind of a silly look isn't it 🤭 Thank you for sharing this lil vid with me and for the kind words, have a great week :)
Thanks for the video Claire!
Another great adventure!
You are fully prepared for the UK’s weather! 😂
I liked the assorted macro shots thrown in for side colour, and watching Claire trying to keep a straight face. 😄
What a wonderful artistic expression infiltrated with practical advice, magic and a couple of bugs.

Overv40 yrs ago my then finance went night fishing and made a camp with a fishing umbrella and tarp, loved it. Enjoy your adventures. Yes we did get married and still are after 40 yrs. X
I always enjoy the pop at the end😊
This video cheered me up a bit, Thank you🌟
lol its funny you mentioned the Ace ventura scene, because that's exactly what came to mind when I seen the thumbnail.
LOVE the Ace Ventura reference at 4:22 !
Yayyy looks so nice and doable
It's always fun to try new things with holes.. that didn't sound right. Great video again!
this one was amusing...the poncho is ok for keeping dry while hiking but I do not think it works better than a nice tarp. one certainly does not want to get wet while out in the woods surviving. It was fun watching you attempt to do the best you could with the poncho in any event. Be safe cute Baby Beare
I love the have a go and see what works approach to camping. Lots of my friends subscribe to your channel and all say they love you
I think Tarp in the summer and back to tent for any hikes with inclement weather forecasted or for all other seasons. That would be my preference. But you have had a go and showed us all the pros and cons. Just one suggestion. Can't you tie the head hole outside rather than inside as I think your water issue is there. Just my thought. But it's great that we can learn by your lessons Claire. Thank you so much for sharing, and I'm so glad you didn't try this in Snowdonia in that storm. Nice one, Claire.
Glad I decided against a poncho tarp as a shelter. That would be best for a backup, or as I use it - a coyote brown poncho that serves as camouflage when going wild camping (over my visible clothes), a groundsheet under my tarp, and a reinforcement tarp over a tent for an awning or extra rain/wind protection.
Thank you!
LOVED IT..
When you poked yer heed thru the tarp hood that sent me into a belly laugh!
Very resourceful Claire! It actually looked pretty cosy, especially when you lowered the ttreking poles for sleeping. Another successful wild camp variation ! 😊
Thanks Paul! I was pretty happy under there :)
Claire, thanks for the video. You must have amazing patience and a great sense of humor to make videos the way you do. You never seem to get out of sorts no matter what you are doing. You should be a councilor in another life. Your voice because of the timbre, inflection and tone could calm the most aggravated individuals. You could have a career reading children's books on tape. Hope you have a great week and enjoy life.
Stunning 😍 😍
The ace Ventura through the doo dar very funny. Brilliant video, great work, x
Yeah, the rhino. lol
Enjoyed watching
Yes goddess of the woods ❤

Great video Claire. Thank you and love from Texas ❤
You is great. Thank you x
Haha, you're hilarious! Love it! I gotta little outdoor school near Seattle. Your kind is always welcome here! 🌲😁
I'm an oldie, but a newbie here, so this may have been mentioned before and you may have already tried it.
However, select yer camp area between two trees at least 2.5m apart. Attach a suitable length of paracord (say, at least 4m in length) between the trees 1m off the ground (or more, if youm prefer). This can be done while still wearing the poncho if the weather is inclement! You can also peg in a metre either side of the cord (that's attached to the trees) that will line up to yer grommets on both sides of yer poncho when it is off and drapped over the cord. Attach adjustable guy ropes to each peg on both sides and leave the unattached ends in the centre beneath the tree cord. Loosen and drape yer poncho over the tree cord, (while still in it) and attach the guy ropes to yer grommets and tighten yer guys. You'll have a standard 'tent' shape for yer bivy and you'll remain dry, although there will be a gap along the edges in addition to the openings at each end.
Remove yer backpack and set the rest of yer camp! Several layers of light vegetation, such as ferns, can be placed along the bottom edges of the bivy and at one or both ends to provide a little more shelter, keep out the draughts!
Always remember to leave yer hood on the 'outside' of the poncho and tie it off, leaving it hanging outside... otherwise, water always finds a way in.
Hope this helps and happy trails!

Plasti dip clear thinned down 1 to 1 with their own brand thinner is great for waterproofing, seams can be sealed with a thicker mix.
I've done most of my tents with it and it works a treat.

You're pretty inspirational Claire , very heartwarming to watch your video's 👌
0:49 Yellow stagshorn if anyone's interested? No? Just me then ☹
As always a great video
During my time in the army, I always used my poncho as a tent while on exercise. This was because the inside of our FV 432 was just too loud, with 3 different radios being monitored. Plus it was cramped, so even in the German winters with -30°c and lots of snow I put down a ground sheet and a sleeping bag and slept under my poncho.
If there was anyone that you’d want to get lost in the woods with Claire Beare would be my only choice! ❤
To be honest if this was my CZcams channel I would find your comment a little creepy
