I Made My Most Useful Blacksmithing Tool!

- In this video I make a really useful blacksmithing hold down tool from an old chain. This thing was really crusty and after cleaning it up it works great! This will be really useful around the shop that I can put it on my other anvils and tools.

I've found the holdfast I forged some years ago does a pretty good job of freeing up both hands when I'm forging, and it pulls right out of the pritchel hole when I'm not using it. I think the stuff I forge actually moves less than your system, but good on you for re-purposing old material!
Yeah, good for DIY but that's a ton of work and not near as handy as a simple spring steel hold down that takes ten minutes to forge and use for a lifetime. Couold have made a hold down and 20 pair of tongs in the time it took to put that together. 🙂
I like the fact you didn't destroy the original anvil stand by drilling these things are only original once!
Very nice! I'm needing to make one for my anvil. Tired of pieces jumping off when I'm trying to get work done! Really like the bar on the back side to allow the holddown to be anywhere on the length of the anvil. Good job!
A foot pedal on the counterweight would allow you to add more pressure if needed.

One thing you could do is make a base mount plate for the anvil stand to sit on and have the slide bar welded to the base plate.
I noticed that the cast iron stand has 2 mounting holes casted into it, one on each side of the stand.
Those holes could be the mounting point for the base plate.
Some threaded rod welded to the base plate the stand fastens to the base plate and the anvil sits on top. Plus of the base plate you can make a holder for the weight to sit in.
In practical terms the cast iron stand is in one piece and is not butchered or drilled with holes in anyway shape or form, plus you have a way to fabricate other holders for the anvil and no damage to the cast iron stand.
A win, win, situation I think.
Plus using the heavy duty industrial gear chain is a good idea for a third hand on the anvil.
I’ve had a similar thought to use the original mounting holes for hammer racks but you’ve given me a great idea! Now to find some plate! Thanks!
Cool idea. Have you tried a hold fast? Basically a shepherds hook you tap into the Pritchell hole that you tap upwards to release. 😃

Great idea i just had a 3lbs piece of yellow hot steel fly up and hit my face. I had safety glasses but not a face sheild. The would have stoped the triangle shaped burn i now have on my face. Thanks for showing it.

I find it helpful for quicker decimal retrieval to put a red dot next to the eighths 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 to visually jump to the vicinity I'm looking for. Maybe you can do that on your next printing for more value add.

Nice ! I couldn’t do what I do without my chain hold fast.
What you need to make is what is used to hold pipe in a pipe vice. It draws the chain down and gets as tight as you want. It would be easy for you to fabricate in your shop.
You need to make an EDC video, not the matter of the Chanel but it would be great

I like the concept but I thinh id go with a spring before trying the weight
Think instead of the c clamps a nice carriage bolt and steel plate on the base to hold the slide bar on will be fitting and useful for any clearance issues

Good 👍. You Could use a little chain binder attachment for torque clamping. Have you ever seen a foot clamp on an anvil?
Nice man!! Those things are super handy. I use a motorcycle chain (easier to come by although i would love some of that industrial chain you used 😍) and instead of a weight i made a little stirrup and use my foot to hold things in place on the anvil. Anyways nice vid and thanks!

You could weld a "foot rest" at the bottom of the chain to clamp your work piece down

Vinegar is like $1 per gallon. I soak all of my used metal in a 30 gal container with like 10 gal of vinegar.
Molasses and water will get rust off.
You could just use vinegar

Useful for you and the 1/2 of 1% of blacksmiths that have or find that chain. Why not make things that more average or beginner blacksmiths can make, and use? If you work on large enough steel to make any use of that "clamp", you probably have a power hammer, or large press to do that type of forging. I am not complaining about your effort, just the execution. Now I know a lot of "fans" will probably attack me for the above, but I'm just being honest.
It’s not for everyone, but that type of chain can be found on eBay or at a scrap yard. If you want to see more basic projects I’ve made lots of stuff using basic tools and railroad spikes. The videos are on my channel
