  • New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is now out on the Nintendo Switch and it is pretty much the same game that was released on the Wii U a few years ago. Something that seems pretty obvious is a new audience from the Wii U has started to pick up the Switch which could give this game a second run. Should you buy New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe? Let's find out.

I would recommend New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, only to those who had never played a NSMB game. The New Super Mario Bros. Series is literally the pure definition of the phrase, "You played one, you played them all." Though to give NSMBU credit, of all the NSMB games I played, I think this is easily the best of the NSMB series. It has MUCH better level designs & better gameplay mechanics than the other NSMB games do it & would totally recommend this one over the other NSMB games because of it. But again, only to those who've never played a NSMB game, because ultimately these games really aren't that much different from each other.

@@dav1d9 Same thoughts here. That one actually deserved the word "New" in the title. The Wii one was fun too especially with the multiplayer. The 3DS one with the focus on coins and much less boss variety (I mean elephant-rynos? Really?) and the difficulty being for babies on top of being dull and boring makes it the worst in the series for me. The Wii U one is weak too, but at least it has multiplayer and the Van Gogh level. Super Luigi U is better than them, but only because it's harder and there's much less down time during your playthrough due to its speed runner type gameplay.

Probably why they simply ported it; even they themselves saw the fan reaction to the lack of changes, and if they couldn't come up with more ideas for the 2D games, then it probably was for the best to just port an existing game and save time and money.

I bought it, having owned to Wii U version since its release. It's a HD, full-length 2D Mario game with New Super Luigi U added on as well as two new playable characters. Nabbit is a particularly nice addition when playing with my young children as he is invulnerable to damage from enemies. This gives my kids a fighting chance and let's them enjoy the game without becoming overly frustrated because they missed a landing by a micron.
For those saying $60 is too much, that's your choice. I however look at it as a game I've already gotten 10+ hours of enjoyment from, still have the Star Road levels to go, plus multiplayer with my kids. No DLC to nickel & dime me like most other publishers out there.
Besides, a decent meal dining out costs $60 these days for a couple. What do you have to show for THAT the next day besides a bowel movement?

I wrote a technical write-up about key differences between this game and the original NSMBU:
File-formats wise, most of the file formats are the same. (For example, Sounds, layouts (UI), levels and other stuff use the same file formats as NSMBU)
They only updated the relevant formats (specifically models, textures and shaders), as the Switch's GPU required them to be updated.
Level tilesets wise, the tilesets now use uncompressed RGBA. (They used a compression called BC3 in NSMBU)
Filesystem-structure wise, it's better in some ways but for the most part, it's worse. All models are now in one folder called "Model", whereas in NSMBU, they were catagorized. The good part is that tilesets are now in one folder. (in NSMBU, tilesets were packed with each level)
Music wise, NSMBU used 32KHz as the sample rate for all tracks, but NSMBUDX uses a mix of 32KHz, 44.1KHz and 48KHz.
Some sound effects were updated. One music track was added (credits for switch developers). All music tracks are the same as NSMBU, except for the Athletic one. They changed some instruments near the end.
So much for the "deluxe" feel.
Another thing, in NSMBU, there was a pretty cool feature which is actor resources (models, textures, animations and shaders) per level. For example, in NSMBU, you can have, say, a custom goomba model for each level in the game~!
They removed that feature in NSMBUDX.
NSMBUDX is the literal embodiment of disappointment.
The only "good" thing we got out of DX is test and early levels. For some reason, the developers goofed and left those in the game, even though they were stripped before the release of NSMBU.
I also made 3 custom levels (one of which was literally made two days before the release of the game lol)
The best of them can be watched here:
