Solid list there Jon, in a year with so many outstanding Death metal albums its a hard task picking 10. One of the best this year has just dropped, Cruciamentum - Obsidian refractions is stellar.

"Seven Doors - Feast of the Repulsive Dead" was my personal favourite this year. Varied, real and atmospheric.
Especially the second half of the album. But maybe it's a little to "oldschool sounding" for most death metal fans.^^'
Fires in the distance is easily my number 1. This band isn't well known yet but I encourage everyone to give them a listen. This album blew me away! Insomniums Anno 1696 is my number 2 for the year... After these two albums it's a shootout for me.

Usually I tend to accuse music reviewers of always overhyping stuff but agree this was a solid year for death metal. Vastum were the one to rock my world more than anything else

My album of the year is Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium. Blew my mind from the album art to every riff on the album just pure heavy goodness. Also my favorite podcast of yours this year.

It's pretty hard to pick even the top ten, but some that I've liked a lot were Suffocation, Serpent Of Old, Sulphur Aeon, Devangelic, God Disease, Grand Cadaver, Cattle Decap., Utilize The Remains, Dying Fetus.... and if I can add the death/doom aspect in here, then definitely Kaunis Kuolematon, Ocean Of Grief, Convocation, Marianas Rest, Oak, Hinayana, Cadaver Shrine.....
All elite bands! And the Dream Unending + Worm split for death Doom. 🤘🤘

Great list, and yeah it’s been an incredible year for death metal! I personally couldn’t leave SUFFOCATION and CRYPTOPSY off a DM top 10 for this year - their albums absolutely crush. 🤘🏼💀

Great video! My favorite death metal album of this year is Anno1696 by Insomnium. I love the story in the lyrics. The music and vocals are outstanding and powerful. Each song is memorable and is special. They really capture the emotions and atmosphere the story so well through the music. I love that they add in the acoustic guitars as well. On top of all of that Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ my favorite musican of all time is featured on one of the songs. Its a record that has really touched my heart.
Hard to believe Insomnium didn't make the list. Anno is a fantastic album.
Your top pick, when I found them earlier in the year, actually started me exploring more tech death bands. They are so good.

I have been more into modern metal bands, I rode the progressive metal djent wave past 12 years, and rode the post metal wave for longer.

Yeah yeah, Frozen Soul may sound like Bolt Thrower. But as soon as you understand that Bolt Thrower was not merely a band but in fact a subgenre of death metal we can all relax again and relish the exquisite quality of Frozen Soul's work.

Great video and great list Jon! Really pleased to see Horrendous at #1, this is my AOTY for 2023 and it's been there since release. So so good. Some others that I've enjoyed that didn't make your list would be: Ulthar (x2), Deliquesce, Celestial Sanctuary, Invultation, Afterbirth...(I could go on and on)...what a year it's been for outstanding death metal.

For me, Nothingness - Supraliminal is up there around the first spot with Carnation and Ulthar right behind them. Also a fantastic debut by Astriferous 🤘

It was definitely a great year for Death Metal, specially for this "Progressive Death Metal Unholy Trilogy" (as I like to call the albums by VoidCeremony, Tomb Mold and Horrendous), I would add to the list this year's releases from Sanguisugabogg, Obituary and Suffocation.
Surely I'll be checking out the ones from this list that I missed!

new sound is emerging from the edges of the death metal scene. A very melancholy, melodic sound that I am coining "Blue Metal". Take Dream Unending, which begets Tomb Mold, who colabs with Worm. Funny enough all the latest album art from these bands happens to be blue. Fires in the Distance, Horrendous, Blood Incantation to name a few. Have a very "Blue" sound. Some blues guitar, some of these albums incorporate keys, with an almost classical tone. I say we have a new genre emerging. "Blue Metal".

It seems like your not huge on the deathcore/hardcore scene. But have you checked out any of the new slam groups like PeelingFlesh or Snuffed On Sight? Im loving tye slam scene rn

But you're right I listen to almost every record that drops every Friday and a lot of the time deathcore doesn't move me. There are always exceptions though.

Crypta is in my top 3 death metal this year, surprised it didn't make a top 10. I could have understood it if it was on the thrash list, since it is pretty thrashy, but it wasn't, so...?????
I could've made this a top 20 and it still woulda been hard. Crypta definitely got strong consideration for both lists. As well as Sylosis. 🤘🤘

That's a super tough question because it's like shouting in a sea of screams.
If you can swing it I would recommend hiring a PR person. They have relationships with all the outlets. They are the ones doing the work that we would want the record companies to do (as far as promotion... Not counting distribution, licensing, publishing etc.)

I will say though, I've been posting comments on death metal videos, giving my link, but to my disappointment, people ignore them.

I mean I don't agree with this list at all but there's some amazing picks. I like all of the albums. Horrendous, CD, Tomb Mold and FITD being the best picks here. I don't understand how anyone can call Frozen Soul the best of the year. It's gonna struggle to get in my top 200. I adored their first album and this was disappointing unfortunately. Not bad but far from great.
This year was great for melodeath and melodic death doom. Also, I'd have Cruciamentum and Sulphur Aeon extremely high
