Love the 416 Rigby!!! Launch mine out of a CZ550 American Safari. My first thought for a DG rifle was the 404 Jeffery, but I found none available in my price range.

While I don’t have the 416 rigby, I own 416 Remington Magnum and 416 Taylor improved. There is just something magical about the 416 diameter bullet, penetration is just unreal. I also wanted the 404 J but prices for rifles available are extremely expensive. Also it takes a very good gunsmith to convert one of the mauser’s in other calibers to feed the 404 J and is very expensive according to my research.
Great video on the history of these monster mashers. I wish Roy Weatherby would have used the 404 Jeffrey to develop a line of non belted magnum cartridges instead of the 375 H&H, and that the big gunmakers of the time - Winchester and Remington - would have followed suit with their new magnums.

I do have the first 30 caliber magnum the 300 H&H and it is a Cracker Jack of a cartridge I really like it

Great video. I like the 30-338, or 308 Norma magnum. This is what the 300WM could and should have been, but Norma bear them to market. Exceptional efficiency, precision, and effectiveness, without the need for the short neck the win mag has. Mine is built on a 98 mauser action, Douglas mah weigjt barrel, Bishop monte carlo walnut stock. Easily under moa, but lives in the 1/2 moa range quite easily. I also have the 338 win mag. Serious medicine. The Cartridges of the world id a great resouce for those of us that jump blinded dow that historical rabbit hole.

Great video! I have spent many hours reading the descriptions and origins of different calibers in reloading manuals and Frank Barnes' Cartridges of the World. Looks like you have too.
1. 300 Win Mag. The Weatherby and RUM are more powerful, but require a magnum-length action. And much more expensive ammo. The 300 Win Mag is "The People's Magnum". From 110gr to 250gr bullets and plenty of power, you can reliably hunt anything but dangerous game with it. Ammo is available at every LGS.
2. 300 WSM. Somehow, this shorter, lower-capacity case beats the original up to 150gr bullets. Any heavier and the People's Magnum pulls ahead slightly. For whitetail, antelope, and the like, the 300 WSM with a 150gr whatever going around 3400fps is an excellent choice. Ammo and brass have started becoming available again.
3. 375 H&H Nitro Express Magnum. That's his full name. Like the 30-06, a classic never dies. Bought one of these for my dad years ago. Tons of fun to shoot. Works great to 350 yards as a whitetail round. Limited by bullet options for that application though. Most .375 bullets are meant to shoot things with huge feet and/or sharp teeth so they just pass through whitetail once they slow down much.
4. 358 Norma Mag. Just finished building one of these on an old commercial 98 Mauser action. Reloading data in all the manuals hasn't been updated since the 1960's, and is very anemic. Same for the 35 Whelen. This round is a beast in a 30-06 length action.
5. 257 Weatherby Magnum. Still one of the flattest-shooting commercial hunting cartridges of all time. The 28 Nosler and 6.5-300 Weatherby beat it, but only after 600 yards. But who's hunting and taking game shots past that, ethically?
6. Honorable Mention - 338 RUM. Building one of these currently on a R700 action. If the reloading manuals are accurate, this shoots a 230gr ELD-X as fast as the People's Magnum with any 180gr pill, and with a higher BC. Complete overkill for medium-sized, thin skinned game. What Magnum isn't? Ballistic equivalent to the 338 Lapua while burning less powder. Factory ammo is generally less expensive than 338 Lapua. Brass is harder to get though and more expensive as a result. It's all theory at this point, so it gets the honorable mention for now. If it lives up to the hype it may move up in my list of favorite magnums.

You are wrong on the 300 Wby mag takes a magnum auction because Rem 700 long action has been used for Rem 700 rifles in 300 Wby mag and some commercial Mauser 98 actions are in 300 Wby mag and I own a Mauser 98 in 300 Wby mag.
There is no such thing as over kill and if the hunters is very smart about bullets, they will shoot one of the brands of copper expanding bullets to not waste meat and make faster kills.

If i was going to get a larger magnum it would probably be the 375 Ruger. I like the case design and the rifles that are chambered in it.

I shoot a 300Win Mag for Eastern Oregon mulies. I shoot a 340WBY for the elk. Both work well.
Are these powerful enough given that game is much tougher nowadays than it used to be ?

I know you were pressed for time but you didn't mention the 35 Griffen and Howe which was also based of the 375 h&H, i was just the 375 necked down to 35 cal with no other change, forgive me I'm a cartridge collector 😮

that would be the 416 Ruger. PRC is a necked down 375 Ruger and the 416 is a necked up 375 Ruger.

Yeah buddy, some big firepower for sure! Glad to be here. I see some 375 H&H ammo out there on some shelves. Rifles are expensive. I'm much more likely to buy a 375 ruger or a 9.3x62. I have a friend that shares a 376 Styer with me, but not much need for that in Good ole America

Friend, If Africa is in your picture, 375 H&H and 9.3 are very available in Africa.If you buy one in the 375 Ruger it's geting atention. Any 416 (not the English (because rifles are expensive) Check the used US market. RUM cartridges available in Africa. In my humble opinion a 416 is the perfect big bore for Heavy Game but also for shooting way out there for plains game. If Elephant not affordable, 375 in whatever Cartridge is the choice. But availabilty you should look into
@@WillyK51absolutely right! I love the 375’s but I feel my 416 rem mag is superior even on plains game and definitely on dangerous game. I run 340 gr woodleigh pp at 2700 fps which basically mimics 180 gr load in 30/06 for trajectory. Also run 300 gr TSX at 2800 fps. I use both these loads on whitetail with amazing result. I have honestly only loaded a few 400 gr bullets because I really don’t have any use for them here is Mississippi lol. Most people think I’m crazy for using this on whitetail, but if I ever do get to Africa I’ll have years of experience with the rifle in the field so it’s a win win.
