- The Dave Grohl snare - it's iconic. The example here is a different finish, but it's still got the same CHUNKY tone!

Need the punch of birch and the beef of a burly, deep snare drum? This is the one for you. I was super surprised at just how sensitive this vintage 14x8" Tama Superstar snare drum was. You can tune it up or down to any pitch extreme, and it'll sound great every single hit! Despite having 40-year-old heads on this puppy, it sounds just as good as a new drum (or better) too. If you've never heard of this thing before, you should definitely give this video a watch. I'd never tried one of these until now, but I think I need to find one for my personal collection soon! Enjoy!
Tama is one of those brands I just haven't had a ton of experience with. My second drum set was a metallic blue Tama Rockstar from the early 2000s, and I LOVED those drums. They got me through a thousand gigs. But it was their Artwood 14x8" snare drum that really changed the way I looked at Tama. That drum was a beast - but not as much a beast as the drum we're checkin out today. Unlike the modern Superstar drums made out of maple, this big boy is birch. And while modern Starclassic, Star, and SLP drums all have their place in the product catalog, it's this vintage drum that just makes me a happy little drummer today!
The drum set in this video is a 1987 Yamaha Recording Custom in hot red finish. The sizes include a 22x14" kick drum, 12x8" and 13x9" toms, and a 16x16" floor tom. I've also got Turkish Cymbals going here too - 15" Millennium hats, 20" Meta Crash, 22" Millennium Ride, and a 24" Prototype Special Dry Extra Thin Ride.
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I like to use organic argan butter to moisturize daily.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

Timbo you’ve done it again, from Bluesman to sludgecore. Tips, tricks and a few tasteful product placements. You’re truly a wonder of the modern age. Thanks for the party Amigo!!
Thanks John. Truly, I appreciate it. So glad you're digging the videos, man.
Timbo's content is too good for the size of his channel. I will create a shrine for Timbo and pray for growth. Maybe Timbo will even grow. He will become a much larger man just like Barry Bonds.
A Timbo shrine sounds wild! 😂❤️ And I loved Barry Bonds when I was a kid. Hahahaha
You are too funny. Thanks so much for the kind words. Means the world!
I thought as I was going mad on thinking the snare sounded "far away" until you explained you did that on purpose! 🤣
Hahaha It’s an aesthetic choice for sure.
Ah yes, Tama birch drums from the '80s. I have a collection for a reason... Your video makes me happy. Thanks Timbo
I need a collection of them now. You’re a lucky dude! And thanks for the kind words. I appreciate ya!!
8 x 14 Tama 1980's superstar is the best snare period. I scored a used one in 1995 and never looked back. Great video!
They're incredible drums. I gotta find one of my own some day! And thanks for the kind words!!
Timbo, every time I hear you play it sounds like you’re smackin them thangs like they owe you money 😂 I love it and this snare is nice nice
hahaha They're drums. You gotta give 'em a good smack! 🤣
That snare was a joy to play. If you've never hit one of these before, I totally recommend finding one. They're just out of this world, dude!
Great stuff Tim !!! Pretty darn versatile snare drum. Kit sounds great. Great playing too !
Yo, thank you so much. This drum was a joy to play. Glad you got a kick out of the video!!
@2:04 KILLED me!! hahaha going into the bluesman bit and almost immediately questioning it was so funny. Thanks for another great video!!
hahaha Connor! My dude. Thanks for watching. Hope you're doing well out on the road. Was so great seeing that rig rundown recently too!!
Killer snare👍Love Birch.
Thanks Roger! Man, birch is quickly becoming a favorite tone wood of mine. But I think it's gotta be the high-end Japanese stuff. Wherever they sourced that wood 30, 40 years ago - that's the best stuff. I'd be curious if that forest has anything left to give...
This is THE Dave Grohl snare to me 🤩. Moreso than the bell brass
I totally hear it. Despite being a wood snare, there's certain metal shell-like brightness to this birch construction. And I love that about this snare. And yet, despite having that high-end presence, the drum still has TONS of woody body. Such a wonderful combination of tonal qualities. Thanks for the comment, Raphael!
i mean, this is the same type of snare he used to tour with nirvana
@@missgradenkoMCthat's why I said what I said! Total Grohltown
Let's go timbo! I love seeing these really unique and often rare drums you review, but it would be cool to see some stuff on sleeper drums. For a example, in a previous video you mentioned how great old imperialstar kits sound. Or maybe just make whatever the hell you want. It's working.
Yo!! I’m working on a video that features more than a few sleeper snares. It’s gonna be a monster video. I think it might be over 20 minutes long by the time I’m done editing it down, but it’ll be worth the watch. I promise! ❤️❤️
@@timbofromkeno Nice! Can't wait to see it.
Once again very informative and entertaining take 😄
I've used 14*8 wooden snare for a couple of years now, and the versatility with small adjustments is great! Imo, BFS is a must have with that size.
14*8 aluminum free floater is on my "to get list".. 😅
A 14x8 free floater would be NUTS! And thanks for the kind words. Always appreciate that! I'll tell you what, though. I feel like I need to get a 14x8 back in my collection after filming this one because this is just insane.
A friend of mine got the Ludwig 14x8 Raw Brass a while back and loves it. And honestly, it sounds as good as you can imagine. So....maybe that's on my horizon!
"what happens in the middle?" that first snare hit hit me like a ton of bricks... Amazing!
Great content as always! (:
Hahaha Yes! And thank you!!
Love the video, Tim! Your playing examples SCHMACKED hard! So good! That drum is insane. Sounded like an old fashioned Wisconsin bratwurst.
Hahahaha I gotta go get some brats now. If you’ve never gotten cherrywood smoked brats, you gotta find a butcher who will make ‘em for you. Mmm mmm good!
And thanks for all the kind words!!
@@timbofromkeno noted, I'll begin my quest!
Love your channel Tim !
Ava! Thank you so much. I appreciate you giving my channel a look! 😁
Another cool drum and a hilarious video! More of those, please
Thanks Tobias! Plenty more to come. I appreciate you hanging around!!
Loving the tones you get out of that basement! Hope this channel continues to grow my dude
Thanks so much. I appreciate it!! 😁👊
Nice! I have the same snare but in the "super maple" finish even though it's birch lol great video Tim!
That finish name always confused me! hahaha Thanks for the kind words, Shawn. This drum is killer. I might have to pick up some of these old Tamas for my personal collection some time...
So glad you have a CZcams channel! 💜
Thanks Jerad! It’s been a lot of fun making these videos. I hope I can keep ‘em coming for a long time!!
I have one of these , bought it for a real steal. I couldn’t believe my luck. I love it.
Mid 80’s drum I think?
Good for you! And I do believe these for 80s for sure.
Hey man, awesome drum nerdery, great playing and great production!! And 1,4k subs?! I predict your channel will blow up, when drummers find it.
Thank you so much. It's been a lot of fun switching my efforts from short-form to long-form video. It's also a heck of a lot more work, so I REALLY appreciate the kind words. Means a lot!
Absolutely Tim, Implementing those certain dampeners has made my snare into 6 different sounding snare drums all in one I guess We could say. 🥁
That’s literally it, right? For a hundred bucks in little accessories, you instantly expand your snare collection (sound-wise, at least lol) without breaking the bank!
Beautiful drum and it's a Tama. The best
100%! 😁👊
Keep ‘em coming timbo!
More to come for sure. Thanks Paul!!
I’ve been thinking about adding a 14x8 back into my collection. Something thick and heavy for maximum smack, but also something I can tune down for that fat, gushy sound. This video definitely makes me want to pull the trigger on one now! Love your channel Tim, sometime when I come through Wisconsin, I want to buy you lunch!
Zach, man, I'd be happy to grab grub with you. Don't hesitate to reach out! And in the meantime, think about Ludwig's 14x8 Black Beauty or Raw Brass. I think you'd really dig that, and it'll be way easier to find AND more affordable than something like that. Hope you land that new snare soon!
Moving into advanced drummer faces 😛
hahahah I'm trying! 🤣
My first drum kit was a mid 80’s Tama Superstar in that same black lacquer finish. 8, 10, 16 and 22/16 kick. Weird sizes, didn’t have the snare but man those drums sounded great!
Those sizes are becoming more and more common for death metal players, believe it or not - 8 and 10 toms up top and any size floor tom down low. Keeps things speedy!
I'll bet your kit sounded amazing. I've gotta get one of those kits in the studio one of these days!
I watch every video of yours and it inspires me to have as much fun making music as you do in these videos! 🤘
Will you ever do a video with humongous bass drums? Like those ridiculous thumpy lads that boom for days? 👀
Thanks so much for sticking around through all these videos, William. I truly appreciate that! I'm too old to own any big bass drums myself. That'd take up too much room and put too much stress on my back. 😆 But I'm sure some friends of mine have a few laying around. I'll put the all-call out soon!
Always love the videos Timbo! Great info, great playing and some laughs? What else do ya need!?!?
Ah man, thank you!!
Love this era of Tama. I have a 6.5 depth Artstar birch, much like this drum. And a power metal brass. Great stuff.
Oh man. I’ll bet those snares are KILLER!
Great video! I own the exact same snare, I bought it new in 1987 at Chuck Levin’s music center near Washington DC. I love it!
Oh wow. The guy who owns this snare actually worked at Chuck’s many years ago!
@@timbofromkeno wow!!! Small world!!! I love your videos!
@@crmasciocchi Thanks Corrado. I appreciate it!!
Always a great watch!! Keep ‘em comin!!
Thanks Alex. More to come! 😁👊
I own two 14x8 snares, they sound fantastic, both different shells and companies. my favorite is the PDP 20 ply maple/walnut, just sounds fantastic
I'll bet that thick maple/walnut shell has a pretty neat sound. I'll have to find one of those and give it a hit!
@@timbofromkeno it's 340 usd on sweetwater, I live in Canada and didn't have to pay duty or shipping, maybe i just got really lucky with that
@@kushking420 Not bad at all for a brand new drum!
That blues man came outta nowhere. Had me rolling.
lol I’m glad! 😂👊
Killer drumming here.
Thanks Greggy!!
Dude love those Yamahas. You’ve got me on the hunt. What Tom sizes are those?
You won't be disappointed. They're genuinely amazing drums. This kit is a 22x14 kick, 12x8 and 13x9 toms, and a 16x16 floor tom. It also has a matching 14x5 snare and a 14x10 rack tom. I got lucky on this. However, it might be for sale down the road. Don't hesitate to shoot me an email if you're interested! : )
Thats a monster snare! I have a tama woodworks 14x8 and its a cheap snare, but its fantastic!
With the right heads, I’m sure that puppy sings!!
Hey Timbo, I just came across your YT channel and I really love your videos and your content. Please keep up the great work. P.S. What Pro-Mark sticks do you use?
Larry, man, thank for the kind words. I'm glad you're digging the content. More to come for sure!
On the stick stuff, I use a few different things. I've got pretty dry hands, so I've been using the Active Grip 5A stuff a lot lately, but I also use the standard Rebound 5A, Firegrain Rebound 5A, and the Maple Rebound 2B!
Old Tama superstar wood snares not only sounded great they could take unbelievable amounts of abuse. Not real good for jazz or acoustic styles, even tho they had a very sensitive snare mechanism, the shell & hoops were too thick, didn't resonate enough at low volume. But for rock/pop they slayed.
This thing definitely SCREAMS rock all day long. Great drum for sure!
@@timbofromkeno my favourite snares from that first wave of top quality Japanese drums were tama superstar & my fave bass/toms were pearl masters. Pearl hardware was superb too, even the entry level stuff was way ahead of the competition.
I have a 14x8 Ludwig Coliseum from the 70s. I've had it since I started and still use it till this day. 🥁🥁🥁
Those are so sick. I really wanna find one some day!!
Nice playing Bluesman! 🥁❤
Hahaha Thanks John!
i like the way u roll into the backbeat or is it just sounding like ur rolling around it?
Thanks much! I tend to use a lot of inverted paradiddle variants in my stickings!
Huge 😮
Serious big boy tone! 😂❤️
@@timbofromkeno 🤣
Dude, what was note of that snare when tuned low?! Sounded insane, frequencies you use tunebot or anything.
Thanks dude! I actually don’t use a TimeBot or a Drum Dial or anything. I tend to go by ear, so I couldn’t tell you what frequency that is. I’ll have to make a video really showing and explaining how I tune the way I tune. I feel like it’s much more an art than a science, which makes it tough to replicate-but I can try!
@@timbofromkeno indeed it is! Thanks man.
when did Frank Black start playing drums and doing drum review uploads on YT ??
😂😂😂
the girth.
Seriously!
Yes!
The man himself!!
@@timbofromkeno I like those snares…thiccc!
@@curtbisq Truly. I'd never played one before. I'm a big fan now!
I own the super rare Tama Artwood 14x8 heavy birch snare, with a 14 (i think) ply shell, and it's probably the best and most versatile snare drum i ever put my hands on!
You can check it out on my channel!
Funny enough, I'm going to have a video on the 6.5" depth Heavy Birch Tama snare in just a couple weeks.
That 14x8" version you have is a BEAST!
BLUES BOI
😂😂😂
That thing just SMACKS
Seriously. It's a REALLY surprising drum. So fun to play!
Sounds AWESOME!!! If you get a chance..... Check out the LUDWIG SUPRALITE 14x8 snare. Talk about a "bang for the buck" for $189.00 to under $200.00. You truly get your money's worth. You can it tune very or very low. The range of "awesomeness" is off the charts.
Would love to hear your review on it. Keep up the great CZcams page. 🤘🏻💪🏻🥁🥁🥁🥁💪🏻🤘🏻
Thanks so much, Tim. Dude, I've been wanting the 14x4 Supralite for SO LONG. That line was such a bargain. I'd love to try the 14x8 too! And I appreciate all your kind words. You the man!!
@@timbofromkeno
You're very welcome. Yeah, I loved that snare so much, I own three. If you look at my profile picture, you'll see their are two on the floor, one up top. That is due to me being a one arm drummer, like Rick Allen. Only my entire kit is acoustic. The floor snares are mounted on SIDEKICK DRUMS snare mounts. Those represent my left arm. Example: Double stroke roll is now left foot right foot, double stroke right hand. 🤘🏻🥁😉
@@timcloutier3729 That is so cool. I'd love to see some videos of your playing. I'm a fanatic about economizing motion around the kit, and I'm sure you're a master of that, both with your setup and with your limbs. Thanks so much for the insight, Tim!
I have a d drum snare 14 by 8
That’s awesome. I remember when they did a 14x8 Vinnie Paul signature snare years ago. I’ll bet yours sounds awesome!
