I've said it a hundred times. We are much harder on ourselves and each other (especially in the church) than God is. He seems to be far more patient and kind with us then we are.
This was my big humbling realisation, especially once I became Christian and had hindsight. I got to know God by seeking truth as an atheist scientist and following a string of at first seemingly serendipitous and eventually undeniably supernatural signs and direct answers over a period of years. I constantly used the excuse of exploration to justify sin and I avoided Christianity because I had abandoned it as a student and it really wasn't socially or egoistically convenient so I practiced worldly religion and tangled with demonic entities before running to God when it culminated in what they call "kundalini awakening" and after that all God's answers came in the form of Bible verses. So I started reading and it was like reading a different story than I remembered because all the humans were sinners like me and prone to messing up and the very same living God who had shown me such patience and love was there treating them the exact same way. Even writing this I've suddenly started weeping. Hallelujah!
Wow, everything pastor John said about being too hard on ones self in regards to sanctification; I myself am guilty of. And strangely enough this new guilt I find myself in, in of itself is so freeing. I beat myself up for hours and days at a time when I fail, I tell myself “how can I call myself a Christian”, I feel like an out and out phony sometimes. Why can’t I see that this is exactly how the enemy wants me to feel, sometimes it’s so hard to hear God’s voice when all your listening to is the Devil barking guilt and condemnation in your ear. I see the Devils plan now, to break us and make us feel helpless in our own sins, to the point we give up and turn from Christ. Don’t give up, there is no condemnation when you believe and trust in Christ ❤️✝️
I've been struggling with this especially with coming back to work part time after having a baby. I keep finding myself looking back to my past successes and getting paralysed by fear and depression about how I can't achieve as much as I used to, despite having such a blessed life now with the sweetest toddler and husband in my life. Set your priorities straight what is more important ? Do you go by the standards of society or GOD'S standards then you will know because the peace of God brings contentment , peace, self-love and total gratification . I've known of many who live very modest and yet consider themselves blessed.

Good teaching. On the one hand, we are to aim for perfection. As Jesus says in Matt 5:48: 'Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.' Jesus doesn't mean that we can expect to be perfect, just that we should strive for this goal to the best of our ability. But on the other hand, we need to recognise that, even with growth in moral purity, we will continue to sin a lot in this life. As James says in James 3:2: 'For we all stumble in many ways.' In this verse stumbling refers to committing unpremeditated sins of short duration. So it is clear, sadly, that we can expect to do a lot of this. And when we sin, we need to quickly repent and rejoice in God's forgiveness and not get depressed by our failure.
We are made to be form into the image of Christ. 2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 1 John 3:2-3 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming 1 John 2:28 It really is a spiritual battle we have to face.
Well, I used to understand Matthew 5: 48, as you explained until a man of God (whom I respect so much ) pointed my attention to the verses before, where Jesus was talking about "loving others not as the unbelievers love, but as God loves us". So actually Jesus wants us to be "perfect in loving others the same way he has loved us". Because remember our righteousness is as a filthy rag before him.
@@Truthbetold9254 A few points: First, the reference to being perfect in v. 48 certainly INCLUDES a reference to loving others perfectly. However, I believe that in this verse Jesus is broadening things out to refer to more than just love. Having said, in the previous verses, that we must love others, he now expands the reference to say that we must be perfect (in EVERY WAY, by implication) - including, of course, loving perfectly. Second, the fact that he is including a prominent reference to love in his command to be perfect doesn't affect the point I was making. The point I was making is that Jesus doesn't mean that we should expect to actually BE perfect this side of death or the return of the Lord. Rather, it is a goal we should strive to get ever closer to, even though we will not reach it in this life. Third, you are right, of course, that our uprightness is like filthy rags. But that isn't relevant for this verse. This verse is not discussing human depravity or our inability to save ourselves. Rather, the verse is simply instructing us to strive for moral perfection.

In the original text, the word “perfect” meant “whole.” When Jesus said be perfect, He is saying that he wants our character to be whole instead of hypocritical. God bless you all.

Very helpful answer. Beginning with justification really places the issue beneath the brilliant light of grace, bringing clarity to the race we run, the trials we face while living with and learning from our failures without allowing them to bog us down going forward. Personally, I still grapple with the synergistic aspect of sanctification in my own life, while knowing that it's ultimately God's power, and work, in me. I've been claiming Phil. 2:13 as a promise, having received the will to please God, I now desperately pray for the power to do so in all areas. "It ain't easy." But using Gal. 2:20 as a daily mantra seems to help-it's like fulfilling Luke 9:23. Blessings all.

I have experienced enough sanctification to refrain from active sins I struggled with but in becoming paralysed for the reasons you outline I have become slothful and gluttonous as a distraction. Loved the video! Thanks Pastor John. My only question is, aren’t we supposed to be contrite over our sin? How can we be contrite over our sin and joyful in the Lord at the same time? What’s the evidences of being too hard in yourself vs being righteously contrite over your sin?
Being contrite over sin and joyful in the Lord are really different things. I think one way that someone can be too hard on themself is if they dwell on their sins instead of letting them go very soon after repenting.

I think I after I’ve sinned I’ve practically just given up and it’s caused me to be more harmful to myself, not others, than good. I’m too hard on myself but I also don’t believe that I am. I think I’m not trying hard enough but I also don’t have enough energy. I don’t know how to have faith. It’s like I pray to God, all I want is a consistent and good relationship with Him, and He just doesn’t answer. I question if my relationship has ever been consistent in the past. Well, it’s consistent now, but it’s bad. Right now, i hate myself. I sin so much and I want to be like the world, but I don’t want to because I can’t bare not knowing God, but, isn’t that what I’m doing now? I’m confused and lost. I just want to give up. I say this to y’all for advice from y’all if you’d like but also to God, if You’re willing to finally answer me.
I understand your frustration. Paul in the bible at some point was also frustrated, when he found himself doing things contrary to what he wanted. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. - Romans 7:15-20, ESV. Just keep talking to God. For His promise is we shall find Him, when we seek Him with the whole of our heart. Blessings to you.
Don't give up! All things work together for good to those who love God and to those who are the called according to His purpose. When you see yourself sin, stop it, turn (run) away from sin and repent to God. Just like David in Ps 51! Pray also for yourself to be open to receiving God's grace in your life and for Him to give you the strength to do this! Consult your leaders in church or find support in your community so that they can be accountable for you in the areas you struggle with sinning. I have prayed for you.
You are not alone in your struggle. It may very well be that you are more aware of “the” struggle more than most. And when you talk about giving up - what does that really mean in practical terms? Remember John 6:67-69 “So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?” Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”

There are certain times where I think I'm hard for myself but that's because I want to be more like Christ. I been taking Him seriously for three weeks now and I still dont have the spirit in me which make me a little worried. I’m struggling a little bit with responsibility on me, I loving sharing the word of the truth and telling people about Jesus. However, sometimes I feel like I am forcing myself too much on saying to myself that I need to tell this and that, I don’t know if it’s Gods will but I feel like I am disobeying God at times by not telling people, am I being too harsh?Any tips appreciated. sometimes the Holy Spirit will prepare a Gospel opportunity for you and sometimes He will prevent it, and that’s okay! we won’t always have a chance to tell each person we encounter about Christ. Don’t feel as though you’re disobeying if you don’t tell the Gospel to every single person in your path. In Acts The Holy Spirit prevented Paul from sharing the Gospel in Asia at a specific time. “Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time.” Acts 16:6 This doesn’t mean we should stop wanting to share, but that if there’s not an opportunity to share, we continue praying to God for other opportunities. Ask The Lord for clarity and wisdom so that you might know what to say and when to say something. Read His Word and receive wisdom. He will give you the words and He will lead you if you ask Him to. One way to help when it feels forceful, ask God if you should say something, lean on The Holy Spirit and He will either place it on your heart to say something, or make it clear that you shouldn’t say anything. Ask Him for discernment and He will give it to you!

Remember we will sometimes miss opportunities, but the goal would be to lead people to Christ with all of the chances we are given. I do not believe this is what God wants from us. I deal with similar issues and in my anxiety I tend to cause myself physical pain but the Lord says he desires mercy not sacrifice. I think it's almost like we feel our physical pain is the sacrifice we must make in order to defeat the enemy however its not. Now we will have pain and suffering AND sacrifice but let it be HIS will and not ours. When you have evil thoughts remember you have an enemy out there and he does not want you to be assured that you are a child of God. If you are a child of God, so ask yourself this question. Obedience is better than sacrifice. Cast out those thoughts using the authority Jesus has given you. I used to do that too but it's better to battle it with verses than hands. God chose you, you didnt choose Him when you became a believer; He loves you too much to torture you. Trust Him.

May the Holy Spirit move here. Too hard on ourselves . . . . . ? In regard to so, so many Pastors, there has to be problems in reconciling their inordinate wealth and lavish lifestyles with say: Luke 16:20 , Matt 19:24, Matt 19:29, Matt 3 and so on and so on - that must be hard? Much talk and preaching is easy, the real requirement as with Our Blessed Lord is by example.
I've said it a hundred times. We are much harder on ourselves and each other (especially in the church) than God is. He seems to be far more patient and kind with us then we are.
This was my big humbling realisation, especially once I became Christian and had hindsight. I got to know God by seeking truth as an atheist scientist and following a string of at first seemingly serendipitous and eventually undeniably supernatural signs and direct answers over a period of years. I constantly used the excuse of exploration to justify sin and I avoided Christianity because I had abandoned it as a student and it really wasn't socially or egoistically convenient so I practiced worldly religion and tangled with demonic entities before running to God when it culminated in what they call "kundalini awakening" and after that all God's answers came in the form of Bible verses. So I started reading and it was like reading a different story than I remembered because all the humans were sinners like me and prone to messing up and the very same living God who had shown me such patience and love was there treating them the exact same way. Even writing this I've suddenly started weeping. Hallelujah!

Wow, everything pastor John said about being too hard on ones self in regards to sanctification; I myself am guilty of. And strangely enough this new guilt I find myself in, in of itself is so freeing. I beat myself up for hours and days at a time when I fail, I tell myself “how can I call myself a Christian”, I feel like an out and out phony sometimes. Why can’t I see that this is exactly how the enemy wants me to feel, sometimes it’s so hard to hear God’s voice when all your listening to is the Devil barking guilt and condemnation in your ear. I see the Devils plan now, to break us and make us feel helpless in our own sins, to the point we give up and turn from Christ. Don’t give up, there is no condemnation when you believe and trust in Christ ❤️✝️

On the one hand, we are to aim for perfection.
As Jesus says in Matt 5:48:
'Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.'
Jesus doesn't mean that we can expect to be perfect, just that we should strive for this goal to the best of our ability.
But on the other hand, we need to recognise that, even with growth in moral purity, we will continue to sin a lot in this life.
As James says in James 3:2:
'For we all stumble in many ways.'
In this verse stumbling refers to committing unpremeditated sins of short duration. So it is clear, sadly, that we can expect to do a lot of this.
And when we sin, we need to quickly repent and rejoice in God's forgiveness and not get depressed by our failure.
We are made to be form into the image of Christ.
2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

It really is a spiritual battle we have to face.
Well, I used to understand Matthew 5: 48, as you explained until a man of God (whom I respect so much ) pointed my attention to the verses before, where Jesus was talking about "loving others not as the unbelievers love, but as God loves us". So actually Jesus wants us to be "perfect in loving others the same way he has loved us". Because remember our righteousness is as a filthy rag before him.

First, the reference to being perfect in v. 48 certainly INCLUDES a reference to loving others perfectly. However, I believe that in this verse Jesus is broadening things out to refer to more than just love. Having said, in the previous verses, that we must love others, he now expands the reference to say that we must be perfect (in EVERY WAY, by implication) - including, of course, loving perfectly.
Second, the fact that he is including a prominent reference to love in his command to be perfect doesn't affect the point I was making. The point I was making is that Jesus doesn't mean that we should expect to actually BE perfect this side of death or the return of the Lord. Rather, it is a goal we should strive to get ever closer to, even though we will not reach it in this life.
Third, you are right, of course, that our uprightness is like filthy rags. But that isn't relevant for this verse. This verse is not discussing human depravity or our inability to save ourselves. Rather, the verse is simply instructing us to strive for moral perfection.

Very helpful answer. Beginning with justification really places the issue beneath the brilliant light of grace, bringing clarity to the race we run, the trials we face while living with and learning from our failures without allowing them to bog us down going forward. Personally, I still grapple with the synergistic aspect of sanctification in my own life, while knowing that it's ultimately God's power, and work, in me. Being contrite over sin and joyful in the Lord are really different things.
I think one way that someone can be too hard on themself is if they dwell on their sins instead of letting them go very soon after repenting.

I think I after I’ve sinned I’ve practically just given up and it’s caused me to be more harmful to myself, not others, than good. I’m too hard on myself but I also don’t believe that I am. I think I’m not trying hard enough but I also don’t have enough energy. I don’t know how to have faith. It’s like I pray to God, all I want is a consistent and good relationship with Him, and He just doesn’t answer. I question if my relationship has ever been consistent in the past. Well, it’s consistent now, but it’s bad. Right now, i hate myself. I sin so much and I want to be like the world, but I don’t want to because I can’t bare not knowing God, but, isn’t that what I’m doing now? I’m confused and lost. I just want to give up. I say this to y’all for advice from y’all if you’d like but also to God, if You’re willing to finally answer me.
I understand your frustration. Paul in the bible at some point was also frustrated, when he found himself doing things contrary to what he wanted. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

Just keep talking to God. For His promise is we shall find Him, when we seek Him with the whole of our heart. Blessings to you.
Don't give up! All things work together for good to those who love God and to those who are the called according to His purpose. When you see yourself sin, stop it, turn (run) away from sin and repent to God. Just like David in Ps 51! Pray also for yourself to be open to receiving God's grace in your life and for Him to give you the strength to do this! Consult your leaders in church or find support in your community so that they can be accountable for you in the areas you struggle with sinning. I have prayed for you.
You are not alone in your struggle. It may very well be that you are more aware of “the” struggle more than most.
And when you talk about giving up - what does that really mean in practical terms? Remember John 6:67-69 “So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?” Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”

sometimes the Holy Spirit will prepare a Gospel opportunity for you and sometimes He will prevent it, and that’s okay! we won’t always have a chance to tell each person we encounter about Christ. Don’t feel as though you’re disobeying if you don’t tell the Gospel to every single person in your path. In Acts The Holy Spirit prevented Paul from sharing the Gospel in Asia at a specific time.
“Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time.” Acts 16:6
This doesn’t mean we should stop wanting to share, but that if there’s not an opportunity to share, we continue praying to God for other opportunities. Ask The Lord for clarity and wisdom so that you might know what to say and when to say something. Read His Word and receive wisdom. He will give you the words and He will lead you if you ask Him to. One way to help when it feels forceful, ask God if you should say something, lean on The Holy Spirit and He will either place it on your heart to say something, or make it clear that you shouldn’t say anything. Ask Him for discernment and He will give it to you!

I do not believe this is what God wants from us. I deal with similar issues and in my anxiety I tend to cause myself physical pain but the Lord says he desires mercy not sacrifice. I think it's almost like we feel our physical pain is the sacrifice we must make in order to defeat the enemy however its not. Now we will have pain and suffering AND sacrifice but let it be HIS will and not ours. When you have evil thoughts remember you have an enemy out there and he does not want you to be assured that you are a child of God. If you are a child of God, so ask yourself this question. Obedience is better than sacrifice. Cast out those thoughts using the authority Jesus has given you. I used to do that too but it's better to battle it with verses than hands. God chose you, you didnt choose Him when you became a believer; He loves you too much to torture you. Trust Him.
The Holy Spirit is here to comfort us. Why would he torment us? The evidence is in your desire for comfort and these comforting responses. But look up his word! The bible says taste and see his goodness!
