- This week's video is a fifth birthday celebration at The Last Homely House! It has been a marvellous five years. My daughter-in-law Anna has put together some clips from over the years, which I hope you will enjoy. In honour of the occasion I have decided to do a giveaway! You may have seen in my last video in the series 'Making a Quilt with Anna' I let her open a Kaffe Fassett jelly roll and started a new quilt. Well I have finished that and it will be making it's way to one of you sitting on The Lime Green Sofa! Here's what you need to do to enter... first make sure you are subscribed to the channel - a huge number of you sitting on The Lime Green Sofa aren't subscribed! I started quilting after finding and watching your channel. I tried to talk myself out of it. I figured at almost 80 I was too old to start a new hobby. I didn’t even own a sewing machine. I had not touched a sewing machine since high school. To make a long story short, I’m working on my fifth quilt. I have a stash of beautiful fabric, and I’m loving every minute. Thank you for the inspiration. 💕
I’m also nearly 80 and Kate has been an inspiration for me, too. We’re never too old to learn new things…..it’s an adventure. The pandemic keeps me home but quilting and sewing for charity makes me feel useful. It’s nice to know that there are so many of us on the LGS keeping each other company and enjoying a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Currently I am making a quilt for a lady who is developing dementia. It includes the embroidered names and birth and anniversary dates of her immediate family so she can see each one and remember. I’m putting a tree of life in each corner. You are so generous and I love to watch your videos and wait for the calmness to wash over me. You are a blessing in so many ways, Kate.

My husband has dementia, and has been in care for four years, but despite not always recognising me, there are times when I see beyond the condition, and get a fleeting glimpse of his true being. I’m sure that the love that you are stitching into the quilt will be felt and known by its recipient and bring peace. Thank you so very much.

I found you just after my husband died in 2019. Watching you helped me get through some of the darkest days and I thank you for that. As I watch your clips from the last 5 years I am knitting on a afghan KAL with Expression Fibers is going on for the entire year and each month there is a new yarn color. I have always wanted to learn how to quilt but never had the room or anyone to teach me. I am really enjoying watching you and Anna creating Anna's quilt. Hello Kate! I’m from Ohio USA. I suffer ADHD and have difficulties staying focused - you calm me down and help me take one moment at a time. You are priceless. I am making a macrame curtain for the spare bedroom closet. This is where my cat’s litter boxes reside. I’m taking part in the #sewpurpletoendALZ22 this month to highlight the need for more Alzheimer’s research, awareness and empathy. So, in memory of my Dad, my Mum and my Aunty Vicky who were all affected by it, I’m aiming to complete 3 sewn purple items to display on Instagram by 30.09.22! Today I’m working on a slightly padded purple Tote Bag while I watch you spin. My Aunty Vicky was a home spinner and weaver, and her and four fiends met regularly in each other’s ’ homes for cake, crafting and laughter together as The Quintet, and they also produced some lovely work. Kate, Happy 5th CZcams birthday. I just started watching your channel. You are delightful to watch. I am primarily a quilter. I am also an artist/mural painter. I came to quilting when I was recovering from an illness. I began watching CZcams videos. I had only dabbled a little in quilting prior to that. I had pieced and tied a couple of charity quilts before that. When I recovered I made a quilt for each one of my grandchildren and great grandchildren. I machine quilted them and designed the patterns. I have seriously enjoyed learning new quilting techniques. Now, in the middle of another illness, I am working on quilts for each one of my 8 grown children. Sewing for more than 2 hours a day is not smart for me now. But I am glad I found your channel, as you are like an old friend, very relaxed and accepting of life. May sound kind of weird but I love to watch your videos to unwind when I start to feel stressed. What a lovely 5th Birthday party. Thanks so much for all that you and Anna do to make this wonderful channel. I do wish I was able to quilt, however I make up for it when I make some of my greeting cards with a quilt style for the background using small pieces of my pretty papers. @@vivienclark6653Thank you Vivien, God did give all of us different talents and although I am not as good as some card makers who do a lot of their own drawing, I still remember how to cut and paste at 83 and I am happy with how they turn out. I give them away to encourage people to send a hand written card it means a lot to the recipient. I am glad to hear you are enjoying sewing, keep up the good work.

I got through the loneliness of those early pandemic days with your kind, peaceful presence in my sewing room while I stitched hundreds of hexagons together. My project from those days was exhibited in a show. It looked a little sad with the other pieces of quilted work, but I was happy to see it hung there. Me and my two aging kitties are big fans of the LGS!
Dear Kate, congratulations from a Minnesota girl in Japan where I have spent the last 30+ years after tying the knot with a Portuguese man from Mozambique whom I met in China. I’m now retired after teaching English many years and live in a tiny hamlet in the foothills where I spend a lot of time piecing quilts, cross stitching, crocheting or doing whatever comes my way to craft. I almost lost my ability to do these things as I struggled with increasing pain and stiffness in the past few years. Happily, a year ago I was able to get a correct diagnosis and treatment for psoriatic arthritis and I can do it all again and walk miles every day along the riverside as well. This past month to stay occupied and out of the heat I crocheted an afghan, sewed up several comforters, shopping bags, ditty bags and small handbags. I give it all away for the most part. I’m just so happy to do it. I love your relaxed show, your infectious smile and your joy and appreciation of life! So glad I found you. Happy 5th CZcams birthday! You’ve worked very hard.

Dearest Kate, I am certain that you have no idea of how many lives you have touched through your CZcams channel. As with so many others on the sofa, you brought me back to quilting after nearly 50 years, back to knitting, and back to slowing down to appreciate all the natural beauty around us. Your videos always bring a sense of tranquility to my heart. Although I am far too interested in watching you to look away and work on any craft that requires much attention, I occasionally work on stitching hexies. Thank you for the inspiration to learn that skill. My grandmother would be so proud. Hello Kate! I don't think you have any idea about how your channel has touched so many people, especially me. I have many hobbies and It is special when I watch you each Sunday. I have learned especially, how to slow down and be calm from watching you. You see I am retiring at the end of this year from a hectic career of designing and manufacturing sofas. Yes, I have designed and made several "lime green sofas". During lockdown, I made my very first quilt, thanks to your channel. I am hooked now and can hardly wait to make more. Just love your show! Been sewing, quilting and knitting all my life and I’m 88 now! These hobbies have kept me sane and whole at times. I have such wonderful memories of things I have made for family over the years, I have 9 grandchildren and 11 great grands and have made quilts for every one plus my own 3 children! Happy hat there was room on the lime green sofa for me and hand sewing I am doing. I am making little sheep critters for my holiday tree which I am stuffing with wool that got when I helped shear my sheep. Can’t wait for my piece of cake to make its way down the long line of folk here!

Hi Kate, at the moment I’m knitting a cape to keep me warm in the winter months in Crete, Greece, and yes it gets very wet and cold in the winter. Tomorrow I will be up in the north east visiting family and friends. When I’m at home in Crete I usually do quilting. Happy 5 th birthday. 🎉🎉🎉
Kate I wholeheartedly believe you pulled many of us through the dark days of 2020 and I for one will be forever grateful. Thank you for shining your light and inviting everyone to sit on your lime green sofa together. I’m currently working on a crib quilt for a new grandson who lives halfway around the world from me so every single hand appliqué stitch I’ve taken is infused with all the love I can send to him. It’s got wacky bright colored pickup trucks pulling trailers full of “love bugs” (VW beetles) all reminiscent of happy days decades ago spinning “doughnuts” in snowy church parking lots in a bright orange bug and exploring the nearby hills in a blue 1940 pickup truck with this sweet boy’s grandpa. Life is good.
Congratulations on your new grandson who will be wrapped in love from you in his crib quilt - stitched by his grandmother. Oh, he will love it and the story behind it too. I also discovered Kate during the challenging days of the pandemic. Kate's calm personality and kindness has uplifted us all.

I can’t remember how I found you all those years ago Kate, but I’m so glad I did. I have many projects always on the go, including finishing my ‘Lockdown’ quilt, a watercolour diary of all the flowers in my garden and some mosaics to give as gifts. Kate it has been lovely to watch your five year contribution to our lives. Your gift of simply being and appreciating all that is around you is what keeps me coming back. I started quilting again after a 30 year rest. When I learned, it was all hand piecing and hand quilting. I made my final quilt when my final child was born and only had time to tie it :) And I missed it, but the expense and time was not compatible with our lives. Now I piece with a machine. I am teaching myself free motion quilting and I do a mix and I actually create more than 1 quilt a year. After working all day, I put you on and sit at the sewing machine and focus on your voice and all the beautiful colours. Thank you for all of your content and for saving me a piece of cake. It looks delicious.

I really enjoy your videos so instructive , relaxing and comforting .
While watching this one I am finishing off a cushion cover by placing some piping
around the edges . On the front I have sewn twenty sections of grandmothers fan from fat quarters in blue , white and some black . It looks good against a dark blue background and will soon be finished .
So good that your granddaughter is interested and getting accomplished in our craft .

Right now I am knitting retro slippers from a pattern that was created in the 1950's. I live in Canada, slippers are a necessity, every year I make slippers for friends and family to keep their feet toasty. I am also working on an English paper piecing quilt that you gave me the inspiration to try. This is the first quilting project I have attempted, and I am loving it. Hi Kate. I came across your channel a few months ago and I’m still going through your past videos. I love watching them as I craft. I tend to have quite a few hobbies, for which I’ve collected over the years. I have so much fabric too , so that’s where I concentrate on most. I’ve really got into slow stitching and crazy quilting, but haven’t got as far as putting much of it together yet. I did a couple of quilts a few years ago and watching you has inspired me to put a jelly roll quit together. So my current project is just that. I’ve pinned the wadding and the next step is to find a sheet, as you suggested in one video to finish the backing. Keep going with your videos. I feel I’m right there with you on your virtual couch. My daughter has just moved back to Canada 🇨🇦 for the 2nd time from Australia 🇦🇺. So I am getting used to the new time zone for communication. 16 hours from Western Australia to Vancouver BC. I have cousins there and still hope to visit one day, plus see all your amazing quilt shops! Cheers from my sewing room to yours
Finishing up 10 flannel receiving blankets for premies ...donating them to the hospital where my little grand daughter Was born ...6 weeks premature! She’s doing wonderfully now at home. Enjoyed making them so much that I got more flannel today to make more ! Self binding and so easy too.

Deborah, that is a wonderful 'giving back' project. So glad your granddaughter is doing well. We also have a 'premmie' granddaughter who was in the NICU for several weeks. She is now a beautiful, smart (All A's studuent), talented story writer THIRTEEN year old . SO MUCH appreciate the premmie care that she received. Her NICU also was using beautiful quilts, handmade by a church ladies group. It made the room so comfortable and beautiful for the parents/grandparents so worried about the tiny ones. Your blankets will be so much appreciated. GOOD JOB.
@@rosemary6844 Yes, the blankets seem to help soften the hospital atmosphere into a more homely place. From the scraps of flannel I make small hearts (about 4 " tall") that the parents wear next to their skin at home. These hearts are then placed with the preemies in their incubators with the scent of their parent.The Nurses (and my son and daughter in law ) say it really makes a difference ! Precious

I have watched your videos for a number of years and due to the lockdowns, my kids and I learnt how to crochet, which we now call "Daddy and Crochet time". Our older kids have gone onto explore other crafts such as painting, paper modelling, drawing, air dry clay making, fabric making of all sorts of things and many more! Along with crocheting many blankets our young children have found very inventive ways of using my yarn stash. We are current using it as spy traps - Oh the joy and imagination of a 6 year olds! I have been crocheting since discovering your channel this spring. My sister was a thrift shopper and crocheter and when she passed away in March I found myself clutching a fistful of crochet hooks in a local thrift shop. I learned to crochet from youtube and have been at it ever since. I think of it as a gift from my big sister. Creating is a healing, comforting, joyful thing. Dear Kate, I can’t tell you what an inspiration you have been in my life. You have rekindled my love of quilting, after some difficult years. I’ve joined a little sewing group that gives me some social interaction (I live alone) and got my Mum involved too! I choose more colourful fabrics now with your influence! I’m currently hand quilting an appliqué scrap quilt and also have a ‘Dear Jane’ sampler quilt on the go too… and I’ve even knitted some dishcloths 🤣. I discovered you while staying with my husband while he was in the hospital for cancer surgery. Those things were scary times with a great deal of setbacks but, glad to say things are getting better and he is back part-time at work. Anyway, I want you to know what a blessing you were during those long days and nights. So peaceful. You gave me the opportunity to have some peace and quiet to hear about all the crafts I love and have done through the years. Now that things are better I am starting on the civil war quilt I've wanted to make for so long. Just want to let you know how important you and your channel are to me. 💕

I love having your company whilst I sit here crafting away. The current project is making blanket squares for charity, the aim is to make blankets for every household who is using the local foodbank. I quickly got bored just knitting plain squares so am challenging myself to learn as many different crochet stitches as I can to make it sampler style. I've managed 23 so far. Thank you for inspiring me to try new things.

Happy Birthday. I am not sure how long I have been a subscriber but after watching this video I know I will be catching up on all 5 years. I knit. Knitting is something I picked back up in 2018 after probably a 35 year hiatus and feel so fortunate I had it to take me through the pandemic. I can’t get enough. I just recently finished my beginning quilting class and looking forward to growing in this craft. Love all your beautiful quilts and fabrics and making. SUCH a lovely video! Thanks, Anna, for your lovely timing, and giving us plenty of footage of the sound of the spinning wheel, from five years ago and today.. I teared up when I saw Norma, of course. I wonder how many thousands of us will do so, on the Lime Green Sofa! While I watched this video I sat and knitted on a Barley hat for my 8-month-old granddaughter. She is a Wisconsin girl, so she and her family have a continuous need for hats in all sorts of colors and weights. This one is bright red, out of Cascade 220 Superwash, left over from a plaid blanket that I wove on my rigid heddle loom.

It is always a joy to watch the beautiful videos you create and to be included in all the magic you weave. Creating, crafting, drawing are all such an important part of my days and to be part of a community of like minded souls has been so wonderful to find. My Grandmother passed on two years ago and so in her memory I began stitching away at a Grandmother's Flower Garden epp quilt. It's a slow and steady endeavour but every sitch has memories of her love and warmth woven into it and your wonderful videos keep me inspired with my creative journey. It is lovely, not exactly sitting on the lime green couch, but across the room at my loom and watching/listening to you as I weave. The challenge this year was to create a tartan, so that is what is on the loom. What a relaxing time with you, your music and my loom.

What a celebration! I inherited 15 quilting projects from my mom. She was not able to finish these quilts during her life and entrust me to complete them. It's been5 years coincidentally, and I have 3 left. I enjoy watching while I'm working on them. She would have loved watching The Last Homely House too.
Good morning from sunny, warm South Carolina, USA. I am forever grateful to Vivi for mentioning your delightful channel and you making room on the couch for us all. I'm mostly in the veg garden but when the heat gets too much I'm on the couch crocheting yet another blanket in the one stitch I know. The dog loves to curl up with me and cover the end of the blanket. 45 pound dog makes it difficult to turn corners but we work it out ❤
