  • Make a bottom bracket bearing cup press for classic American made Schwinn bicycles. This press will work on most bikes with old style one piece cranks. Save money by replacing bearing cups yourself.

I just installed a set of bearing cups with this method. It worked like a dream! The store I went to didn't have the 2 1/2" washers, so I substituted a couple iron pipe flanges (3/8" nominal). I did find nylon washers but only 1/4" ID. Enlarging the ID with a 1/2" drill was easy enough.

    I couldn't find 2 1/2 inch washers at Home Depot, but I did find some square load-bearing washers 2.5 x 2.5 x 5/8 hole for .98 cents a piece. I got a 6 x 5/8 bolt and nut and some 1.5 x 5/8 zinc washers all for $6.03. I'm still looking for some nylon washers to use.

Excellent! Sometimes you have to be creative when sourcing materials. If you can't find the nylon washers it isn't a disaster. They mainly make it easier to tighten.

Even Ace doesn't have nylon flat washers; it's crazy. I'll just grease the steel washers with Red n' Tacky with each use.

Hi, how do you remove the cups from the frame?

    • @GregDickerson-bikevideos

To remove the bearing cups from the frame, you drive them out of the frame with a hammer and a large straight bladed screwdriver or a punch. They are a friction fit, so just hammer on the end of the screwdriver or punch a little bit at at time, working around and around the cup until it drops out of the frame. Try not to gouge the inside of the frame. Let me know if you need more information on doing this job.

      @@GregDickerson-bikevideos Hi, thank you!
I serviced my bottom bracket yesterday and hopefully won't have to do it again for a long time! I was just wondering because the next time whenever I service my bmx I'd like to put some new cups inside the frame for piece of mind as I'm hoping to have my bmx for many years to come.
Thanks for such a quick reply i highly recommended anyone to check your video out! 😊

    Why the nylon washer?

The nylon washer can make it easier to turn the wrench to tighten the bearing cups. You don't have to use them. You could also use a little oil on the washers to help them turn easier. Thank you for watching my channel.

If the nylon washer has the right inside and outside diameter, it could also be used to help center the bolt in the washer.
