- The Gibson J45 is my favorite and most used acoustic guitar for recording. It doesn't matter what genre. My partner Matt Goldman keeps a 2001 J45 at our studio and I've used it on every single song and record for the last 3 and half years.

Which version of the J45 was your favorite? Let us know!
the older the better imo without a doubt
None. I heard NO difference in the guitars. You should have someone else play the guitars without you knowing which was being plated and try to identify the guitars, When you play them you get non audio clues that help you identify them.
@capsuletocone Are the raw files still available? Link is broker
The 2001 Mahogany to me. Is more mellow and balanced to my ears.
I own a 2023 J-45 Standard and love the guitar. ❤
Hunted down a 2006 rosewood after seeing this video about a year ago, love the guitar!!
The ‘91 is special. Playing them myself in a room I usually go for rosewood b/s guitars, but for tracking, mahogany + mic = recording delight.
Man, there’s some uniquely warm about that ‘06. Every single J45 I’ve played has sounded so different. I’ve got a 1970 J45 deluxe that I love. It’s not too boomy, not too bright. Secret studio weapon!
The production quality on this video is fantastic. Great job with it! Thanks for the J45 info. I'm a bit of a Yamaha FG fan, but I might pick up the Epiphone version J45 to try it out.
James Taylor used a j-50 which is the natural top instead of sunburst. The only difference. He may also have had a j-45 but most of his work was on the j-50. Most pictures you see of him back in the day was with his j-50. Same guitar just different finish. I have a j-45 I bought when I went to buy a d-18 to go with my hd-28 and d-35 martins. I wanted a mahogany body guitar. I played the d-18 then tried the j-45. I now own a wonderful j-45. The shorter scale length and action sold it. I did have to pay a little more but well worth it. This was the first quality guitar I have ever purchased that didn't have to be set up. I bought a 1970 d-18 new but left it in my car in August of 1984 and cooked it. Cracked the top, warped the neck and bubbled the finish and pick guard which also cracked the top at the pick guard in two other places. But yes on the j-45. I would recommend it. Only problem is the play ware where your arm rests while playing. The sunburst finish shows ware very well no matter what polish or wax I have used. The finish is very dull where your arm rests. But that don't effect the sound or playability at all. I love my j-45. Get yourself one you will love it. The quality of workmanship is great.
This was perfect the way you presented this. And thanks for saying which one you would use for strumming. I have a Taylor that is a pain to record with. Thanks!
Having owned a rosewood guitar for decades, I was biased in favor of them until I heard this video. The rosewoods in this video seem sharper and crisper, while the mahoganys have a more mellow tone.
Thanks for your work! I liked the older ones, especially the 91..
I agree. Perhaps my bias is that it sounds exactly like my 91, but I like the softer tones it offers. For the most part though the difference was so minuscule that I would be happy with any one of them
Love J45s ...had the pleasure of playing a 50s model that you could feel the mahogany vibrate against your chest when you strummed it ! I liked all the models in your video and liked and subscribed ....also as sound drops I would love to hear a mic picking up below the sound hole ...I know it sounds crazy but I'm an old gal lol 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦
91' is just woww
Same for sure, like not even close. 06 would be my second fav. Anything besides the 91 just sounds tinny and thin, though.
Funny it was the 2001 J-45 as well I have picked right after the demo and your take.
wow.. 91 gipson amazing...!!!
How much this guitar?
I've pretty much always preferred Mahogany over Rosewood, especially on a Gibson.. a J-45 or a Hummingbird.. but my main weapon of choice right now is a 2012 Gibson Advance Jumbo (obviously Rosewood) so my ear is digging the 2 Rosewood guitars. Lol.. All 4 sound amazing!! Love the video! 🤘
That’s why I have D-41 Martin . The mahogany is reserved for my Gibson’s…
I preferred the 1991 then the '01 hog. My ears gravitated to the mahogany back and sides to the rosewood. Your mileage may vary.
I remember watching this video when it Was first uploaded like a year and a half ago and left a comment about my opinion at that time.. So re-watching it a year and a half later my opinion has changed lol.. My first comment I didn't really give a specific favorite and mostly commented on the Rosewood and Mahogany differences..
My opinion now is I believe my favorite is the '91 J45.. although the '01 is also amazing.. Man all 4 are amazing and obviously I'd be beyond happy if I owned any of them..
I play a Gibson Advanced Jumbo (2012) and it seriously sounds and plays unbelievable!! Yet, I'm still thinking about trading or selling it to get a Gibson with Mahogany back and sides..Preferably a Southern Jumbo or Hummingbird Standard.
They all sound amazing .my favorite is the 2001 followed by the 2001 rosewood! I'll gladly give you 45 dollars for any of them 😂
The 2001 for strumming and the 2001RW for the picking. Nice shootout!
Agreed!
Great video! PB or 80/20’s? 91 is my choice!
I got a 2012 and luv it
Just before you shared your opinion at the end, I was thinking “Man that mahogany. 01’ sounds the best.!!” Ha
I probably like the 2001 most. I had a 2013 True Vintage (“Banner”) that was great, and now a Collings CJ45 T, which is a more modern take on the sound worth comparing.
Both of the Rosewood j45's sound best to me. But out of context it's hard to say how they will sit in a track. Frankly I'd take anyone of them and be happy.
Are any those the 1942 banner re issue? The one that’s 5k vs the standard j45 that’s around 3k
I love Martin D and Gibson J45 but for recording. I went cheaper but more practical. The Yamaha silent acoustic. When you plug it in its a modeled perfectly holy grail of Yamaha acoustics I cant remember what one. But its just so much more practical for recording when you have a furnace kicking on and off 6 months a year, and an untreated room. Theres no micing up theres no issues with room or the AC in summer or furnace in winter. Its the PERFECT utility guitar for recoding. I would rather play my “good” guitars but for practicality and utility. The silent acoustic is hands down the best for home studio recording.
I sometimes put an sm57 on the 12th just to catch some picking detail of the pick on the strings. But thats it. And its not needed its just something I find adds some detail.
So it the action just amazing on these or not different the say a 500.00 Fender. I really enjoy playing and would love to invest in one of these but I have two fenders.
Liked the 01
Man that 2006 J-45 Rosewood is definitely a beast,
I know, he is selling it too! I should buy it from Curtis!
I prefer the sound of the 2 with mahogany B & S. That is the classic J-45 sound for mr. The rosewood J-45's sounded a bit muted - not really like a D-28 IMO.
I really like the 2001 Mahogany, but all are good👌
That was my favorite too!
The 2001 was my favorite strummer and the rosewood was my favorite flat picker. It just had the slightest more bite to the sound. And the top end sparkled, but it was one of my least favorite strummers.
what strings do you use?
I have a 2001 j45 orange label and i found my forever guitar. So the 2001 sunburst has my vote, rosewood isn’t for me after owning one
fantastic! just got my first j 45...what strings gauge and brand?? and pick? sorry if you said it and I missed it!
Rock on! We didn't say in the video, but Curtis uses a super thick 2.0mm pick and we had D'addario 12's, Phosphor bronze on the guitars!
06 rosewood
Id love to hear a martin d28 comparison to it
I would too. That would be a cool test.
The unprocessed 2001 for me!
I liked the 06 Rosewood the best. Can't tell you why tho lol.
It does sound pretty great. I tried to get Curtis to trade me that 06 for my 01.
I liked the 1991. I have a 1976 J50 that I believe is nothing more than a blonde J45, right?
06 Rosewood every dang time
Just got a J45 standard, I use elixir 11-52 strings
My buddy says I need to put 13’s,
What’s your go to gauge of strings for recording?
In an older comment they say they use 12's. I've had mine for almost a year and that's all I have used, Martin Retro. Try out what ever, 12's 13's, coated uncoated, cool thing is, you got time, that guitar belongs to you now.
There's always a "buddy" or even a "teacher" trying to convince people that heavier strings sound better whether acoustic or electric. LMFAO!!!
I put 11s on my strat . Cracked the nut in half . couldnt play the damn thing . Went back to 10s . On the other hand 11s are great on my Washburn J3 jazz box . But I generally dont bend on that guitar . I have Dadadario extra light on my j45 which is best for my playing style on that guitar . I do like to experiment a little on differant guitars . Its what you like and feels and sound best for you
😎
2001 - 2nd J45, is the best
2001 for me!
That's my favorite too!
@@Matt_McQueen Amazing sound! It's the guitar of dreams!
Just got a 2001 J45 off CL, great shape but a little buzz I'll have to figure out. What strings do you use?
I think the J15 shines as a recording instrument…not as much thump, balanced, from bottom to top.
I reckon the 1991 J45 tops all of them 👍
2001
For me the 1991
2001 rosewood hás same trick in it
They sound very percussive, steely and buzzy sometimes. The action is too low imo
I think he should use a thinner pick
A mic’ed acoustic sounds so much better than any dinky sounding acoustic pickup.
I prefer the 2006.
I prefer the Hogs. 2021 Hog sounded better strumming, and 1991 better for fingerpicking.
The 2001 was my choice.
I like 2001 J45. 1991 is too bright and 2006 is boomy.
8-12 years huh? Nice j45
J-45 =Hog to me… if I’m getting a rosewood dread it’s not going to be a Gibson , it’s going to be a Martin !!!! D-41 sounds about right …
Btw, 1991 and 2001 Hogs sounds great ….
to my ears, j-45 2001 is best.
1991 had the best bass
