How Many CALORIES Can I Burn in 1 HOUR On My RACING SIMULATOR?

- I set out to find out how many calories I can burn in about 1 hour on my simulator. I run a pretty high force feedback and brake pressure setting, so it may be more physical than most people's setups, but I think we found an interesting correlation to between heartrate and concentration in this video. Was the final calorie total suprising to you? Definitely let me know your thoughts down in the comments!!

Just an FYI, the calorie measurements were taken via the Polar App (heart rate monitor) using the Car Racing preset (yes it has a car racing preset lol). It’s what I use for karting and IRL stuff so I can’t speak to the accuracy of it in terms of calories. I found it interesting nonetheless!
hey Can you tell me how you calculated the pulse in calorine? your videos are really cool and there because of the accident, I think that on the one hand it would have been your fault because you just drove too aggressively in the corner. On the other step it could also have been a racing accident where no one is to blament
thanks
I have a question, if you were to choose any F1 team out of these, what would you choose? Ferrari, Mclaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull.
@@dobermanproductions8184 AstonMartin
@@dobermanproductions8184Definitely Mercedes or Aston Martin. Most competitive team without stupid crap like being too cutthroat or dumb management. Red Bull is for the experts or else you're gonna be really stressed.
@@crimsonstripes I was asking Cameron but ok
Sim racing in the summer is probably the sweatiest I've been in my life aside from running lmao
Right? I gotta have a fan going on my face at all times or I overheat. I guess we identify as the engine
Even more fun with a vr headset on my face during an endurance race, haha after 2h I'm completely done for!
The great thing is you don't feel out of breath
@@rubeneeltink8607 Either if you aren't done for physically or overheating, the level of sweat means your getting it in ya eye balls if you don't take a break
I have 2 fans at the top of my monitor stand, one sitting on top of my PC at the front of my rig, and a larger one sitting on my desk all going during the hotter months. I still sweat like a pig, particularly with my VR headset on.
Cameron I feel like you get a fair amount of hate but I like watching your videos. I love the amount of information and the very methodical approach you take to your videos, and they’re very helpful for me, a casual forza player whose performance improved drastically after finding your channel. Keep up the good work
Thank you! So glad you’ve learned something. I wish I had someone telling me those little details when I first started playing Forza. I would’ve realized how much opportunity there was for gamers in IRL racing a lot sooner, but also eSports is much more prevalent these days.
Yeah I went from just a Forza player to entering my first kart race in march
"Can you get ripped by just driving on a simulator?"
Sure you can! The only reason I started a sim racing channel is because my government wouldn't let me use the gym for two years :D
lol how fast can a F1 car beat any type of car was def a banger
it could've been a lot cleaner if you braked sooner, but it was certainly your corner at that point. good race
That’s a crazy amount of calories! Maybe I should bring a sim set up to the gym next time 🤣
your videos are fantastic man, great quality :)
Absolutely fantastic, nice job ✌
Heyy Cameron, just wanted to congratulate with you for all the effort you're putting in these videos! I remember you competing in F3 and finding you here on CZcams is just mind blowing... i mean, not all of your colleagues would do that and get that success 👏👏
phenomenal video, subscribed!
At my age, it would raise my heart rate just to see it displayed on the screen under stress. Almost like "which lap do I give out on?".
That was an overly aggressive dive there, CLEARLY. The other car had to yield for you otherwise he would've hit you, you dove from a distance and you let off the brake for a bit so you could scoot up next to him on purpose.
But hey, it's racing and sometimes the temptation gets to you. Enjoyed watching this! 😂
you track straight out and leave no space for any theoretical car on your outside. sloppy move.
i was looking for that content, thanks.
Superb video Cameron. Was always curious about this and whether it was actually a thing. Still the results were surprising.
I might start a new series on my channel “Sim Race Yourself Thin” 😂
Well done mate
Having done like 200-300 races a year in iRacing the past couple of years with a DD wheel, i kinda do feel my arms / shoulders have improved lol. It feels like a real workout sometimes :)
Im more into drifting and after a while my shoulders start hurting
i love your videos i love the car racing also the stuff you teach us we love you
Bravo for not being afraid to show your mistakes!
My vote is that the guy blinking his lights every fricking turn is at fault, and is also one of those guys that thinks if he can catch you you should pull over. I would have punted him.
The more someone starts blinking me the more aggressive I'm going to be to them so I see nothing wrong with the send although I think it could have been tighter if you didn't slightly clip the kerb. Interesting video!
Heart rate is not an accurate estimate of calories burned, especially when dealing with mental instead of physical stress. An out of shape person will get a very high heart rate from even climbing the stairs, while not burning that much energy. An athlete with good conditioning will be able to exert great force and burn lots of calories while keeping their heart rate fairly low.
An over weight person uses more energy to climb the stairs. Lifting a heaver body takes more energy.
But they get their heart up a lot when atheticising anyway
@@evasiveferret you've missed the point completely. A higher heart rate does not necessarily equate to higher energy expenditure.
@@bikerboy3k A bigger person has to move more mass against gravity, so there is a greater amount of work done and more energy expended.
@@wutschkorammo5 you're being polemical and argumentative without knowing what you're talking about. Sit down and be quiet.
Nice video!
I find those calories hard to believe, heart rate isn't really an indicator of using energy.
it actually is a pretty good indicator
What is an indicator of using energy them? I've heard this before but never know how exactly it works.
@@ActuallyAudacity movement, he'll burn a few resisting the wheel, but that's about it. If heart rate burnt calories, fat folks would burn calories sitting up
@@McNab1986 I mean isn't that why fat people usually have a high BMR? I understand what you mean though. I guess that also explains why weightlifting doesn't really help you lose calories.
@@ActuallyAudacity Best way to burn calories if ya kinda lazy, is to simply start walking everywhere that isn't absolutely miles away. Be surprised how effective that can be if folks stick to what they were eating and just be hungry sometimes
Very interesting subject and video 🎊 Thx a lot !!
About the Big dive, no, it's not fair (you didn't kept your apex... You should give back the position)
You would have ended with 2 wheels in the grasse, so still not fair 😁 ... But hey, who cares 😂
Nice driving 👍
@@francoisstrat4891 Thats still in track limits if at least 1 wheel stays in white lines. Confused how thats unfair
@@jezlar1231 it's a bit unfair to me because he touches the car in the exterior because of too much speed.
The opponent gave enough room to pass with 2 cars, so in regard of the FIA regulation, he made a dangerous move.
But honestly I think nobody cares 😂
Very very interesting. I've been racing and driving more since getting my VR headset and I've actually read from my fitness tracker that driving has decent (ie. non-negligible) calorie burn over resting (obviously) and in the same ball park as walking, fast walking or hiking (depending). Seems like this exercise of yours shows some of that.
Around 15k of walking is roughly 400-500 kcal. Intense driving is the same for a shorter time? Nice.
yeah my tracker vibrates when I reach excercise level heart rate and vr sim often reaches that
Calorie counters are never perfect but it does give a rough idea of amount of calories burnt. However this was a cool experiment !
I think if this would have been open Wheeler Formula Racing u might be right with the "your corner" but from a GT racing Perspective this was just a divebomb :D and giving him the Pos. back was the right thing to do. But good point with the Vid :D Iam sure i would be 20kg more without simracing :D
your chest and arms are going to be extremely strong if you always use 20+nm of force, and your left leg will also get stronk, because left foot braking
Your Sim setup is cool
Everytime the lights are about to go out, my heart rate goes crazy. I've got a smart watch that records my heart rate and you'd think I was exercising with how nervouse and anxious I get before any race starts.
Lmao, I’ve done the exact same send up that corner on Bathurst in Grid Autosport.
Honestly, I’m actually amazed because now I have another way to work out
Hi! What´s your setting on max force on iracing ?
Love de contentent❤❤
Saw this on tiktok yesterday then now it came up on my feed
We raced last night (V8 Veterans - Supercar) and I dropped 1kg in a 62laper at Rudskogen!
What setup do you have because the setup is also a important factor, someone that uses a basic setup wont lose that amount of kcal during a race.
I would kill my knee with brake pressure like that. Already hurts after a good session with my standard Thrustmaster pedals. I don’t even use the little cone wich came with it. Interesting video.
Surprised about the calories burnt. Good excuse to do some more laps.
they are way too even and light. The cone is way too stiff
I use a squash ball and put it behind the brake for a more progressive feeling
In all fairness driving the macca in a straight line is impressive
What app did you use to choose sik racing mode ?
What hardware did you use so measure your heart rate? Lovely vid mate
Nice content
How much torque from your wheel?
Wich pedals?
What hardware and software did you use?
i dont sweat playing circuit game

Definitely on you
Give dirt 410 sprint cars a shot. Its super close quarters, high speed, and intense racing. My heart POUNDS the entire race. Even with the races being shorter, I'd be curious to see how many calories are burned.
Should have try at nords
Notice that just being too warm and therfore sweating because of that dont make you burn any more calories. Just makes you dehydrated
I got a question; What steering wheel do u use??
That move on the Merc... Rubbin' is racin' son...
iRacing ohh the fastest way to become bold as Stradi says
"Nueva semana de iRacing, nueva semana para quedarte más calvo"
Your gear gets warm too don't forget to factor that in when building a sim
when's Cam going back to Euroformula or F3?
That incident, it is a bit of a dive but I don't think it was your fault, your well enough ahead by the apex and you were gonna make the corner before he turns in
I have the same amount of wins of lando norris
I consistently set off the heart rate warning on my watch, and I only have a logitec G920, so much less wheel torque.
Amazing that you can burn that many calories!
What wheel and wheelbase is he using/ Cameron?
Whats the token name in chart at 04:05 ? Is it on Binance?
man I remember getting tailed by some mf in a R35 GT3 at Spa,after defending him endless times I finally crossed the finish line with 5000 gallons of sweat under my shirt
Do you still do irl racing?
Hello
What is your steering wheel because it beautiful
100% your fault 😂😂, great video btw !
Perfect excuse to tell my mum. :)
I mainly do time trials, and when I'm really pushing to shave a tenth or two, I think my HR is high. It makes me extremely agitated and I'm quick to temper. I actually have to turn it off after a while of intense effort simply because I get irritated for no good reason. I often wonder whether a high heartrate leads me to this state. Whenever I play sports, I'm the same. It's really frustrating, because I'm more likely to quit something in rage than try and master it with practice. Of course, this is all on the heartrate... nothing to do with me being a hothead! Haha.
Rocket Jump Ninja has a video on that. Might wanna watch it to curb your temper. Best of luck 🤞
@@joshuabenson2568 Thanks man! Will check it out.
I was on this track in carx
I have a few questions about this experiment.
1. Is high heart rate correlate to calorie burned?
2. Putting question above to the side, how much different would it be if it was done with something entry level like basic G29 set or T150 Pro set or even the PXN V10? Because I doubt they'll do as much as a high end setup like yours.
I’ve been wondering this myself. A quick google search resulted in this:
“A heart rate monitor is one of the best ways to measure your calorie burn. Your heart rate indicates how much effort it takes for you to do a certain activity, and that effort determines the calories you burn. If a heart rate monitor indicates your calorie burn, it’s more likely to be accurate than the average activity tracker because it’s taken your specific heart rate in to account.” -MD Anderson Cancer Center
I will be doing a deeper dive in my next video 🤙
@@CameronDasRacing Definitely not an accurate measure of caloric burn. There's no chance you burned 400 calories in a race. Heart rate is a good indicator of calories burned, but it's not 1:1 for every activity. It's why any smart watch will have different options for different workouts. Unfortunately, the amount of calories burned by sim racing is unknown, but I would guarantee that it's not 400. I'd bet it's maybe 1/2 of that, if I'm being generous. 400 cals only slightly less than you'd burn doing a moderate swim for an hour straight and is over half of what you'd burn running for 1 hour straight. But we all know both swimming and running for an hour take far, far more effort than sim racing for an hour straight.
I love sim racing, and I do think it is probably one of the healthier forms of gaming (especially with a DD wheel and high force pedals), but I also like fitness and I don't think the numbers in the video are correct.
New gym machine: sim rig
whats this monitor called?
Cameron tqm
Is that the Pluto MoonSwatch lol?
Let's go Maryland
why does he look like jacob from twilight just me ok
Try a full motion rig. Two years after owning it have gone from 210 to 189lbs.
Damn bro it took you two years to lose 20 pounds
@@petrification yup. You'd think 5 just with a sim rig and force feedback wheel. But only 2 racing about 3 hours a week an hour at a time.
I’ve never found motion rigs to add all that much for me. It can’t replicate open wheel g-forces so I normally ask to turn it off if I’m on a motion rig.
Probably because all of your money went into your full motion rig instead of groceries.
@AtlanticLove lol. Funny, but mostly my boat fuel!
I literally live near this race track lol
From looking at the heart rate rises and dips, you are not very comfortable with very tight turns with no visible points of references to aim the car to (Skyline to Esses; Turn 11-15) , made a lot worse with the glare off the sun; with the dip in heart rate to the comfort of not needing to fight a position and known reference to points to make your turns (The Chase; Turn 20-22).
Self-induced panic/stress is also creating unforced errors and rise in heart rate
Yo do you still drive in f3
640 calories is way more than I would've thought, not bad at all
Thank you for the comment, I was trying not to sit through the whole video to just find out the calories.
I like his content I just didn't have the time right now. Thanks.
It's never "your corner"...
If your side by side with someone with any overlap, you leave a lane. Full stop.
If you can release the brake, and complete the pass before the exit, exit into his lane, with no contact, that is fair.
But you can't "release the brake", rush the apex, say you're "ahead at the apex", and exit the corner and into his lane, and thus car, and then claim that it's not your fault for contact.
Just think, if you had left a lane on exit, you would be side by side down the next straight, and have the inside for the last corner, and would complete the pass cleanly.
Instead, you keep the thinking that a pass is made by half passing a car on the inside, and claiming it's your corner. And until you fix that mindset, your SR will forever reflect that fact.
:/
mount panorama on top
In the old days before the invention of power steering, guys would just go out for a drive as a form of exercise
You have to leave space on the outside until you're clear of the other car, you don't "own" the corner just because you're further ahead. It's not F1.
Facts
it is true but i’d say it’s a racing incident purely because by the point of the apex turning in he’s infront and has control. so he’s actually left room on the outside there but the other guy has turned in on him. So aggressive move and just a small driving error and that’s what happened so i’d personally say racing incident
in simracing 14:14 not clear overtake and, mostly, immediately give position back. IRL "rules" about my corner after apex, little bit different compare to sim.
In simracing almost always - overlap(virtual spotter say clear or 2wide)=keep place for other car. On high skill you can predict clear on exit on braking/turn in on virtual mirror.
IRL - your apex=your corner=your exit(other car backoff/lift) cuz almost IMPOSSIBLE control car in your base or not(for lead car)/no spotter/ no info. This rule have safety reason, not crash in 2wide in corners/exits.
In sim this is not needed. No safety, not moneycrash =)
about heartrate interesting)
i think my heart rate increases while watching racing or sim racing
640kcal? NOOOO WAY WOW! I have to start "training" on my Apple Watch to validate :P
Drifting in Forza with a wheel w more than 180⁰ is a full body workout
Dude was trying to pit you and got caught on the McLarens low COG. He even gives you the corner only to turn in on your rear quarter panel. Aggressive but he was to blame for the contact
You should read research from the McGill physiology studies in F1 racers. Yes, the heart rate increase is mostly from adrenaline. No, the caloric calculation is not accurate because caloric burn rates calculated from heart rate are based off off running or cycling, where muscles are burning energy. Cyclists racing in sprints can frequently exceed max heart rate because of the muscle burn and adrenaline.
That turn was not your fault, it was tight and the exit may have been rudimentary but the fender hit sent you over
u were going wide even before the contact, thats what happens when u come in hot. and u were by anymeans behind him before the braking zone, so it is his corner, rightfully
yea im all for a dive here and there, but looked like he basically just locked up and was going off track regardless of what the other car was doing. and the situation turned out to be much worse than just running slightly off track
@@officialaustenmorpho3224 he broke so much later than the braking zone so I don't think taking the normal braking point would've made him rear end the back of the car he was chasing
That overtake I feel like it was legal
I believe you can go to f2
u send it ... if he made a switcharu he cloud make it, and maybe u go offtrack if he didnt crash with u
IMO, you were right to give up the position. I think it was a seriously late divebomb, and I'll bet the only reason you were able to get by is because he saw you sending it and backed off to avoid a wreck. I seriously doubt that you would have made that corner if you hadn't used his car to help you slow down and turn. That corner is tighter than it looks and the camber falls away on exit. That kind of "back off or we all die" driving is what drags sim racing down, IMO. You never would have tried a move like that IRL, so that right there tells you it was a bad decision. You had the straight line speed, so you could have waiting a corner or two and passed him cleanly. I was actually happy to see you give up the position because I think sim racing needs more good sportsmanship like that. We're all there to have fun and test our skills, not to play chicken. Any idiot can do that.
Anyway, I don't mean to sound like I'm scolding you or whatever. I really enjoyed the video. I mostly race F3 and F4 so I'm looking forward to more of your content. Cheers!
The amount of calories may not be precise, but you definitely burn calories doing simracing. That is a fact. Then I suggest everybody to make sports aside to keep shape 😛
💀 just got click baited by Cameron
Sim Racing saves you money on gym membership.
I suppose higher Force Feedback increases Calories burned?
Maybe overtime, but I think I proved on the video that concentration is more of a correlation to bear rate than physical effort (at least in sim racing). Maybe 100% FFB is a different story though, so I might give it a try.
