    I just recently did a 4 night solo canoe camping trip this last July on Allegheny Reservoir. Fishing was terrible, but the 33.5 miles of paddling over the week was a lot of fun. Wonderful knowledge about how Handsome Lake Campground got its name! It's the only boat in/hike in campground that I didn't stay at, because it looked a little too exposed for thunderstorms that were on the way.
    Funny thing. While I was there, I saw no other paddlers, other than a few day visitors kayaking around the boat ramps. Kind of caught me by surprise that there weren't others, considering all the camping opportunities the lake offers. I realize this was filmed 5 years ago, but for anyone reading, I've tried kayaks. I've tried popular brand, lower dollar canoes. And I've tried high dollar canoes. Hands down, a good canoe, and a kayaking paddle is the best multi-night, long distance combination one could ask for. My particular equipment, I can load 100 pounds of gear, paddle 3.5 MPH effortlessly, 4.5 all day long with exertion, and 5.5 for an hour plus. Save your pennies and spring for a good canoe, if you really want to get into this type of paddlesport camping.

    nice video, we're canoe fanatics more than hikers so I enjoyed this video. Technically you're in the Allegheny Reservoir (the River is below the dam). Also, be careful camping so close to the shore, I believe you have to be 500 yards from the shore or more (but many people ignore that rule)

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  Před 7 lety +2

      Yea I completely forgot to look up any regulations. There were a few people camping directly on the shore. I practiced leave no trace especially at the first camp.

    First I want to say thanks for this video. Wish the friends I had made out west would stumble on it. Why? Because when I lived out there so many of them thought we were paved with all big buildings from the ocean to the Mississippi river. They couldn't believe we had country side like this. In my younger years I lived in a small town called Allegany NY. I spent a lot of time along the river and this reservoir and love the area. I got into kayaking last year and I'm planning a couple trip down to that area. It is such a beautiful area. One advice to those coming here to visit. If yo cross over into the NY side you need a fishing permit from the Seneca Nation. The river on the NY side belongs to the Senecas from the state line up to a small village called Vandaila. The city of Salamca sits entirely on the reservation. (And if you like casinos they have one. One final note, no I did not spell the name of my town wrong. As we were taught if it is nature you spell it Allegheny. As in the Allegheny mountains. If it is man made it is spelled Allegany as in Town of )

    • @kellyhart4985
      @kellyhart4985 Před 5 lety

      Not all of Salamanca is on the Seneca Reservation, Reservation line ends at the Bowling alley on Central Ave (Rt.219) Some of Newton Street and Erie Street are off the Reservation also. All of the Allegany River is on the Reservation in the city of Salamanca.

    Just bought mine at Costco for $250 out of $300 then took it to Willow Beach in Arizona at the Colorado River, crossed from one shore to the opposite and back; and was fantasizing about a kayak camping trip; it is just down here in the desert there are not too many places to get lost on a trip like that or at least I do not know many places that I could just load up the kayak and go camping, I got kayaks for my kids too and we all went for first time ever kayaking we all did pretty well but they were not too much exited, anyways, I like that if going kayaking you can take more weight than if hiking so that would be nice for the opportunities it affords to have fun with comfort..

  • @thestrider710
    @thestrider710 Před 7 lety +1

    Tip on your paddling technique: You want to lock your frame so your forearms are perpendicular to the paddle and about shoulder width apart. You then want to turn and pivot your torso to paddle instead of pedaling your arms like a bicycle. That way the power of your stroke is coming from your much stronger core muscles and your wrists and elbows are doing hardly any of the work.

    Before you buy a kayak, check out a pack boat. A cross between a canoe and a kayak. It has some advantages in packing and portaging. U tubers Joe Robinet and his buddy Burly Outdoors use them on some of their outings. Kayaks are better in rough water like oceans and swift rivers. The pack boats may be better for the the calmer rivers and lakes.

    So I see you brought along a benchmade, looks like a good upgrade from your older folder. Is that part of your normal pack now or just because weight was less of an concern with this trip?
