  • The fishing hook options out there can be intimidating. The good news is that there are basically three different types of fishing hooks. All of the different models are a variation of these three fishing hooks. Hooks for fishing come in many sizes, shapes and colors, but this video should help you pick the hook for your next fishing trip. I discuss the circle hook, treble hook, and the J hook and these bet uses for these fishing hooks.

    Here's something that is often overlooked, especially when using a Palomar knot (or anything other than a snell). And that's the hook gap. I've lost some giant fish because the knot completely pulled through the eye gap or snapped because of the sharp point in the hook gap. I try to ONLY use welded eye hooks. So far the best option that checks all the boxes for me has been Trokars.

    I was very curious to get your take on a subject few seem to want to discuss: what hooks to use. I was a little surprised that you didn't talk about the use of tribel hooks for dough baits, salmon eggs for example. Two baits I use often. Besides that, very good information.

      They are great for the reason you mentioned, but this video is designed to target new anglers that are looking to get general questions answered more than a specific style of fishing like you discussed. That could be a video all to itself......

    When using circle hooks from the bank, does it matter if you use a bait clicker instead of having the spool locked? How much resistance is needed for the fish to hook itself?

    • @DieterMelhorn
      @DieterMelhorn  Před 2 lety +4

      Never use a bait clicker with circle hooks. Defeats the purpose and design of the hook......

    Do you have a preference on inline circles vs offset circles?
    I do understand an offset circle increases the chance of gut hooking but may increase the hook up %..
    Realistically have you done a comparison on the amount of bad hooksets you get with an offset vs inline or the hook up ratio comparing the two designs?
    Any data on utilizing barbless circle hooks? (Losing fish etc)..

    I watched this video before and forgot if you answered this question:
    If I was given a load of different sized treble hooks for free, do these give better results for catching the catfish than a single hook or about the same results? I know there is a chance of snagging more.
    If so, I may use those more to avoid having to go buy more single hooks.

    Usually I just listen and learn but I gotta interrupt a 3:40ish.. . I have been using treble hooks since I was a kid to catch channel cats using dip baits and liver.... Saying it's not a hook your gonna buy just slammed the door on the finesse baits of catfishing... Btw I'm pushing 60 years old
