How To Fix Everything Wrong With The AMT/ERTL 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra Torino Model Car Kit Part 1

  • AMT's 1/25th scale 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra / Torino Fastback model car kit has been on the market in many different forms since it was first issued in 1968.
    First appearing as a factory stock car with the option to build it as a drag racer, the model was updated in 1969 as the Ford Fairlane Cobra.
    Then in 1971, AMT released a series of Modified Stocker kits that were earlier annual kits that were converted into dirt oval track race cars.
    These model cars included opened wheel arches, huge tires, exterior crash bars, bumper over-riders, and side impact bars.
    AMT severely altered the original molds in order to add these modifications, hence destroying the first issue kit.
    The AMT 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra kit stayed in the factory archives for almost 2 decades!
    Then a miracle happened in the 1990's!
    Cashing in on the upcoming Muscle Car trend, AMT decided to restore a lot of the old, damaged molds in an effort to cater to the trending Muscle Car model kit builder. The 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra model kit was one of those projects brought back to the hobby world, but it needed a lot of work to restore it to factory stock.
    Although the restoration was decent, the model kit was plagued with fit issues, remnants of older release parts, a notorious frame and wheel base issue and many, many other headaches which are still part of this kit in Round 2's latest release.
    In this series of videos, I will be teaching you How To Fix Everything Wrong With The AMT/ERTL 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra Torino Model Car Kit.
    My research into what went wrong with this kit came from many of my CZcams and Facebook followers as well as research spanning model car building forums on the internet, CZcams build videos about this car, blogs and my own experience building the two model cars shown in this video.
    My research netted me 23 issues with the kit, but my build found many more. (I lost count!)
    In this video, I have chosen to build two of these model car kits, one as a Factory Stock Cobra and the other as a "NASCAR" race car.
    As you will see in this video series, it is not possible, right out of the box, to build a totally accurate 1969 Ford Fastback. Some versions of this kit, like the most current, include the 1969 Ford Torino rear bumper, making a Cobra build impossible, while other earlier versions include the corrected Cobra rear bumper. The Torino rear bumper also makes it impossible to build an accurate NASCAR version as the Torino rear "egg crate" body panel would have been removed to save weight in the race. Another factor to make any version incorrect is that the front bumper comes from the AMT 1968 Ford Fairlane Indy Pace Car convertible kit and that part was never changed for any of the kits.
    Other issues with this kit come from the AMT instructions themselves. Although AMT made a good attempt to give you easy to follow assembly instructions, they do call you to use parts that can only fit in earlier releases, and that are problematic to use in the kit's current state.
    I will be going through these parts and how to correct them in full detail as this series unfolds.
    In addition to the standard hobby tools, you will also need a sheet of Plastruct or Evergreen styrene to correct a few of the problems.
    Although the modifications and additions to this kit are lengthy, I will do my best in this series to walk you through the build so that you can enjoy this model and put it together as AMT intended.

    Hi Trevor, been looking forward to this, as they say "Let the show begin", as a youngster of the 70s if anyone would have said id be still making models in 2024 albeit after a long break and enjoying watching something on a hand held device communicating with yourself on the other side of the world i'd be amazed.

      With all my footage, I have enough filmed that I made 4 videos just by cutting the footage into 30-40 minute episodes. I think that makes you and your phone very happy!

      @@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage I'll do my best but it is even starting to frazzle my little grey cells. Have you got a Polar Lights Talladega kit🤔. It has a full Holman Moody chassis but the body isn't good,I'm tempted to swap bodies but that wouldn't help with a factory stock car. I've been checking amt 69 mustang for parts swap too,but that short I think🤣🤣. It's not helping with the progress I was making on the model😣

      You are welcome. I see that the rear Cobra badge seems to move around that trunk lid on different people's cars though. however, that's a small detail compared to the rest of what's going wrong with this thing! If you have the Cobra decals, it's not a problem to place the logo where you want it. If you have the molded on trunk lid and no Cobra decal, you are stuck...and that's the issue in my case.

      Could be Pete...or we could be looking at a restoration in some cases where the owner put the badge back in the wrong place. - but then, there would probably be holes in the panel. There was also some minor modifications made to these cars from the factory later in the 1969 model year. They went from a Cobra decal to a metal Cobra badge. The rear badge locations might have been part of that as well.

    Well done Trevor!This was a thorough Diploma thesis for the ancestry of the Torino kits!Now we have to call you officially Professor Torino 69!👌😉!And i had another resoluten to the length problem of this kit!Because it was already spliced together by AMT , i lengthened it by 2mm!So there are a couple of resolutions for this problem!       And think...this is just the first video and I have uploaded another 3 in the series for a total of 4 and I still haven't finished the kit.
      In the end though, it will be the most thorough video out there on how to fix this car "Box Stock"...unless someone can find something else I missed.
      I wonder if you noticed that the real Cobra had staggered shocks and the kit has tandem shocks? - That's just another issue in the pile of issues this thing has.

    Hi Trevor, thoroughly enjoyed this vid with backround history of both the real and model car along with how to correct it, as a born again modeller I think I'll build this one a few models down the line.
    I've started on my Shelby Mustang and used the Humbrol blue paint and doing it in the promo style without stickers and where possible a few performance mods and at most Appliance or Crager type wheels for that day two look, im doing them kurbside style as they will be displayed in that way, after watching your vid on engine id like to paint them detailed and displayed alongside the car with left over wheels and make up mini parts board like I had at work it was like chip board with small holes drilled for hooks and parts hooked/mounted from Cal Custom, Mr Gasket and even Slash cut exhaust tips.
    Im hoping to get the dyno printer 70s style and simply print the car year and name and make or buy some shelving with a perspex front, thats for later as im only on my third model.

      Hopefully once the series is finished, you can have an easy time putting this model together.
      I am going to upload part 4 tonight and then that's the end of my previously filmed footage. Onto new footage of the completed build for video 5.

    For a correct Torino build, to get the correct front grille, is the only option to get the ‘69 annual kit?
