Jim Otto dies at age 86: Honoring the Pro Football Hall of Famer | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

Raider Nation since 1967:
The great Jim Otto was the first Raider I ever saw. One of the reasons I'm a Raider to this day. He will always be The Raider!
When I was a kid I had a special relationship with my father. We’d throw a ball and watch games together. He’d say to me, “Son, you’re not just a real zero. You’re a real double-zero,” then Pat me on the back and laugh. And I’d respond, “Thanks dad. Just like Jim Otto.” Good times.
Best Raider ever!! Unbelievable 15 years as a Center, his helmet looked like it went through a Roller Derby! Real Football era he played, at 86 he had a great long life!! RIP #00
An amazing and dignified segment for Raider/NFL legend Jim Otto.
As a lifelong fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, (since mid-60's) I (like most Chiefs fans) had immeasurable respect for Jim Otto. I got to see him play in Kansas City many many times. He was a true warrior and though he wasn't the biggest man on the field (6'2", 245), he took on the biggest and toughest players in the game and held his own. He was an American Football League legend and was proud of his association with the AFL. Otto represent the Raiders at Bay area banquets from time-to-time and often members of the San Francisco 49ers would be there too. When one of the 49er players made a snide remark about the AFL or the Raiders, Otto would ask the guy if he wanted to step outside and make the same statement. He never got any takers. Jim Otto was truly one of the greatest AFL and NFL Players in the history of both leagues. He was what other centers in pro football would measure themselves by. In 15 seasons he never missed a game or the start of a game. He sacrificed, never complained, never missed practice, played through injury, supported and fought for his teammates, bled for his team (the Raiders) and the AFL and he knew how to win. With Otto in the Raiders lineup, you knew he would battle right to the bitter end. As a Chiefs fan I would have been extremely proud if he somehow ever played for the Chiefs at any point in his career, but that was never a possibility because he was destined to be a lifetime Raider. I could go on and on about Jim Otto but I think anyone who has read this far now knows how great a player and man he was. It's my hope to one day meet him up in Heaven, shake his hand, buy him a beer and ask him about his most memorable Chiefs-Raiders game from back in the day. When God made him, he then broke the mold.
There will never be another like Jim Otto. RIP 00. Long Live the AFL!!!
Clash of the Titans: Jim Otto v. Curley Culp. May they both be at peace.
00 was one of my heroes growing up.
Raiders fan from 1969 to present.
RIP Jim Otto.
Glad i got my jersey signed by this legendary man the definition of a Raider 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
RIP Jim Otto a raider legend and Miami Hurricane legend. Thanks for the memories #00
Raider fan since 2016 and Mr. Jim Otto always be remembered as the Original Raider. He played from the Raiders’ first season in 1960 until 1974. He is truly a Raider. Actually he’s already been a Raider before Mr. Al Davis came to the Raiders in 1963. He’s the reason why the Raiders became what Raiders is all about. Being a tough, physical, and a pride to be a Raider and that’s why he’s Mr. Raider. I’m gonna miss you Sir. Rest In Peace Mr. Jim Otto🙏🙏🖤🤍🖤🤍
Jim Otto threatened to throw my dad out of the Raiders office when my dad went in to complain about the crappy tickets Al Davis issued for him after being one of the first 200 season ticket holders ever. A man in pain.
More detail?
My dad had 49 yd line seats, row 12 at Frank Youell Field which seated about 12,000. The Oakland Coliseum had about 50,000 seats. They put my dad on the 20-yard line in the second level. They wouldn't make it right. So he went in to discuss it in person. My dad was not a belligerent man. He said Jim Otto threatened to throw him out. Take it or leave it, get out or I'll throw you out. When my dad died, his second to last words were, I think Al Davis is an evil man. But he never gave up on his Raiders.
😞One of the greatest Centers in the NFL, ever.
In the NFL but also in the AFL too. He played every game of every season while in the AFL and he kept that pace up even after the two leagues merged in 1970. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980, Otto was the yardstick that all pro football centers were measured by. He was a great man, a great player and a tremendous representative of the American Football League. Heaven's team now has an All-Pro Center. RIP #00
The greatest Raider, 1st watched him play in 1964
Dang it, Otto man. Otto-matic! This one hurts. RIP to the all time greatest to ever play the position.
REST IN PARADISE
UNCLE JIM🙏😎
He's there for sure. Now make sure you live a good life so you can see him there when your days are done. RIP #00.
God bless him.
What a beast. Never be another. Rest in peace and enjoy your reward. Once a Raider ALWAYS a Raider! ❤
Otto was from my hometown. In an era when "safety" was just a position and blood made the grass grow. Rest in Power. RN4L
Jim Otto said he'd go up against King Kong... and put up a helluva fight... once a Raider... ALWAYS a Raider!
football was so tough then nothing like todays game
I am a life-long Pittsburgh Steeler fan. That said, I had the utmost respect for Jim Otto (he might have been even better than legendary center Mike Webster).
No mite about it, HE WAS
Jim Otto has a quote on his Hall of Fame Series card what do I consider a serious injury to keep me out of a game if you're dead that's serious rest in peace Mr.Otto thank you for everything and I live my life like that quote my condolences to the Otto family a true warrior and legend
I became a Raiders fan in 1968 and double zero was besides #3 Daryle Lamonica were my first two fondest Raider players as a little boy . Thanks Jim double O Otto for all the memories you gave this little boy at the tender age of 9.
Mr. RAIDER. This legend was the definition of what the Raider is.
To me, Jim Otto was THE GREATEST RAIDER! You'll never be forgotten. When future generations look at the position of Center, they need not look further than Jim Otto! He lived a long life, and died a RAIDER! The Raider Nation is in mourning as we honor one of the greatest players to play the game.😢❤ RIP 00
It's nice to see Florio give Jim his props. One of the reasons I am part of the Raider Nation is because of this man. So many Legends played for the Silver n Black, but Jim was a God among men on the field. He was a warrior and Florio is correct... Jim Otto is the Autumn Wind! RIP Pops. You will always remain in the hearts of ALL of Raider Nation!
Sad lost another great Raider. RIP..."00"
He was a Legend and Legends live forever
A lot of people use the term GOAT so loosely. Jim Otto Truly was and is the GOAT at center.
RIP JIM OTTO RAIDER NATION 4LIFE
He came to my high school and talked to the football team. What a nice guy for free
Jim Otto! An OAKLAND RAIDER!!!!!
I was 9 years old in 1967.
I watched a documentary that detailed all his surgeries and the health conditions he was going through during his playing days and for years after he retired. He had cauliflower ears (like a boxer) from all the smacks alongside his ear-hole from the defensive tackles back when, as Mike mentioned, there were hardly any rules. It's amazing that from all he went through physically, he lived so long. One of the legendary centers to have played the game. One of the greatest. RIP Jim (00).
Thank you both for that tip of the hat. Respect
Thats the nicest thing mike has ever said about the raiders.
RIP thank you for all you did for the team and fans your be missed.
Raaaaiiiiddddeeerrrrssss
Mike Florio doesn't say many good things about my team The raiders. This segment makes up for it thanks Mike😊
Great center, when we think of the Oakland Raiders, Otto was who we always thought of. RIP.
There once was a center named Jim Otto,
Nights before games he was rarely blotto.
An era with real football players,
Guys you’d see like Gayle Sayers.
Should definitely be in the Hall of Fame Lotto.
He was great. But don't romanticize those brutal days many players died Young. Safety is a good thing
Rip James Edwin Otto, you will be missed
00 was the genesis of RaiderNation. Made his mark defining what it is to be a Raider. Rest in Paradise Jim 🙏🏼
A legend in football rip brother🙏❤️😞
Otto was so tough. I read somewhere that Jim Otto came into the game at 205 pounds but bulked up to 255 to play the position better.
Jim Otto is the final Raider of my personal Raider Mt. Rushmore to pass on, which included Al Davis, John Madden, Ken Stabler, and Jim Otto. Those are just my 4 because they all embody the classic Raider "mystique".
Played at the Oakland Alameda County Stadium (where the Oakland A’s still play) with Curt Gowdy and Al Derogatis calling the game on NBC. As a Jets fan, we despised those Raydahs. RIP big 00
Losing these greats, sucks!!! R.I.P #00
I encourage everyone to go search up Jim Otto top 100 players of all time. It's right here on CZcams from the official NFL channel. RIP King 👑 you and Gene up in heaven paving holes.
Rip 🪦
Mr. Davis if you never do it again this is at least the one time that you need to retire Jim.Otto's jersey number (00)
I couldn't agree more! Jim Otto was the yardstick that all Pro Football centers were measured by. He was a true warrior for the Raiders. Saw him play many times in Kansas City at old Municipal Stadium and then at Arrowhead. He never backed down & never gave an inch. I had great respect for him and truthfully, I believe Otto was the primary reason the Raiders passing game (particularly the Mad Bomber, Daryle Lamonica) was so effective. RIP #00.
AFL Great RIP #00
Though no longer an allowed NFL player number I hope the league officially retires 00 in his honor,.
I grew up in Oakland the 60's and 70's a die hard Raiders fan. Jim Otto was a legend. I had the pleasure of meeting him many years later, a gentleman who was glad to take time to talk to fans. I was surprised how small he was compared to the behemoths of today...and many of those he played and dominated against during his career. A true hall of famer.
The greatness that is the Raiders. Love this game.
So when I first saw Ottawa it was 1967. I was 14 at the time and I'm 71 now. Florio, were you even old enough to see him play?
I don't think he is!
RIP 00
R.I.P
RIP
Love the old bull horn nose guard with two bar face mask
The NFL should allow Offensive Lineman to wear 00. They deserve a number that stands out besides 50-79. Skill players can wear different numbers and I believe its time to give NFL Lineman some spotlight with the 00.
RIP MR RAIDER☠
The Raidar logo IS Jim Otto. R.i.p
Some say it's Ken Stabler 🐍
A Center with a simple double bar face mask- that says it all.
These two shouldnt be allowed to discuss anything Raiders. Karen and Kevin...
Aught and "O" are other words for zero. So, 00 could be pronounced as "aught O"', which sounds like Otto. That's why he wore #00.
Jim did choose to wear less protective facemask. It was a bit of a badge back then
God rest Jim Otto’s soul but Chris, can you ask your colleague Mike Flores oops I mean Florio, how does it feel to be owned by Demeatrice Lamar Jackson?
No rules remember the head slap with bra strap cushion in helmet
