  • Today we're in Kanda Jimbocho, known mainly for its multitude of bookstores. Head there if you’re looking for woodblock prints and vintage books. Will also be popping into Moto Tsuruya Yofukuten which is a tiny shop full of miscellaneous goods from the mid to late Showa period.
There’s anywhere from 150-180 second-hand bookshops in the area as well as many cafes and curry restaurants, so may pop back to make a second episode😊
Btw if you notice my nail polish colour changing, it’s because the video’s compiled of 3 separate visits😂
Estimated prices in USD($) are from the exchange rate as at April 2024.
Thank you so much for watching and hope you enjoy the content🥰

Jimbocho bookstores are all located along the south side of the main street, facing to north. The reason is obvious, they are avoiding the sunlight. In the opposite side there used to be bunch of curry rice shops, whose prices are inexpensive since this area was originally for college students looking for their books.

As a homeschooled brat I used to love going into university bookshops and browsing all of the academic titles. Are there still academic book shops around Jimbocho? Not that it would do me much good given I don’t read Japanese.

I was in Japan about 3 weeks ago and I visited Hara Shobo. The lady in the shop was really nice and taught me a lot of history about several woodblock prints. Afterwards she showed me some new woodblock prints that came in the day before and that were not yet posted on the website. So after looking through them I found one that I like, it was really expensive but I bought it anyway. It will always be a great memory for me of my awesome vacation in Japan.
I highly recommend you visit this shop!

This bookstore video crawl is excellent. I appreciate that you list the prices, and give detailed information about each bookstore. Your knowledge of Japanese art/artists is impressive. Nice that all the jimbocho you review are in close proximity to each other, and you are reviewing smaller independent shops. Good to support the small businesses. Your report provides a comprehensive choice of shops to visit. Keep up the good work.

YES! I raised an eyebrow when I first learned about this Japanese stationary obsession online...all these shopping vlogs in stationary stores etc. And then of course I went to Japan and the big ol' penny dropped: I was comparing the IDEA of Japanese stationary to my Western experiences thus far. I couldn't believe what I was seeing over there. Exquisite stuff that I never even knew I wanted until I saw it. The Guinness World Record for 'darkest black ink' is a Japanese pen. The smoothest ball point pens in the world with the finest tip are Japanese for the obvious reason that if you have to write that language on a small area you NEED to have both a superfine pen AND one that doesn't smudge and blur. Every aesthetic is covered in the mix of the practical too with so many hidden artisanal 'niche' stationary stores. Thank you inadvertently for reminding me to keep working overtime so I can indulge myself wildly on my next trip. I wish the same for you too Marco! 📝🖊✏📔📓📎✌😃

This is fascinating, because I always was interested in different methods of block printing, and took many classes - the West Coast printmakers of Arts and Crafts were strongly influenced by Japanese methods, even if the style itself was different. I definitely would like to check out the art tools place! Fascinating video! Thanks

Loved every second of it, and certainly appreciate your sharing your obviously vast knowledge of Japanese arts and culture with us. Loved learning about Shikō Munakata -- wonderful creative work. Very sad to read that his house and most of his pre-1945 woodblocks were destroyed during the war. And fellow stationery addict here. I think I have enough to drop a note to the citizens of a country or two. :)

Thanks for yet another wonderful and informative video tour. I’d love you to do one on Kakejiku/Kakemono sometime. They seem few and far between with really low quality reproductions, damaged or worn/torn pieces, to newer quality repos purchased from the likes of galleries and museums. I see a fair few in flea markets videos I have seen and believe that some of the Bookoff Super Bazaars have them (I love watching your visits there!)?

    • @tokyotique

Thank you so much! You can sometimes find Kakejiku at at Oi Keibajyo Flea, mainly with calligraphy rather than illustrations. They're really hard to unravel and film though (I've tried😅). Hope to find some displayed unravelled and hanging up sometime. Appreciate you letting me know your interests!😊

I ran out of time to visit this area on my last trip but the more videos I see the more I wince at how much I missed out on. One doesn't need to be able to read Japanese text with advanced proficiency in order to find really, really interesting things to buy in 'booktown'. There's art, movie posters, vintage graphics and everything in between. Thank you so much for this ravishingly lovely video, filled with a constant stream of inspiration for my next adventure in Tokyo. You did a fantastic job. 🤩👍
