English Football Fans BANNED From Protesting

  • In 2021, it was football fans in England who forced Premier League owners into backing out of the proposed European Super League, which ultimately led to the league's collapse.
Just two years on, the ability of those fans to protest, whether that be Manchester United supporters against the Glazers or Liverpool fans in regard to FSG, has potentially been thwarted by the U.K. government.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the two controversial pieces of legislation in question, the history of protest movements within and outside of football, and whether the U.K. is creeping towards authoritarianism.

If you live in the UK this new legislation should concern you regardless of your political affiliation. We're not talking about foreign policy or economic measures, we're talking about the basic human right to protest against something that you disagree with. In some cases, such as those who glue themselves to roads there does need to be an ability for the police to clear the disruption, however this legislation opens up a significant can of worms in regards to over policing and protest quashing. Whether or not you think it affects you now it certainly could in the future.

I can't help but think, "you get what you deserve!". I witnessed the introduction of illegal practices being adopted by the police back in the 1990s and spent years telling people that we were at risk of losing all of our rights if nothing was done to hold them to account. I'm talking about police turning up to protests with masks and with no identifying numbers displayed on their uniforms. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when hordes of uniformed officers with no I.D. turned up to square up to the people protesting the first Gulf war... They used a procedure called 'Kettling', I believe, where they confined us into an ever shrinking space to the point that people were getting trampled by each other and then the cavalry rode their massive horses through the crowd... of peaceful people including mothers with small children, pushchairs and prams. I couldn't believe how many people were willing to knowingly break the law in order to defend the government's decision to go to war. There were hundreds of them!
Nobody gave a damn, not even when it happened again for the second Gulf war.
This latest legislation carries all the hallmarks of the extreme arrogance of the political elite who have been in charge for so long without even the slightest threat to their authority emerging in over a hundred years. People have been happy to accept the loss of their rights and freedoms without complaint or resistance and the powers that be have no respect for us anymore.

love the video, just wanna say as someone who works in a football stadium in the uk, and has to do a lot of coordinating with the police, i can say first hand that majority of the police (at least in my experience) think of football fans as almost a herd of dogs they’re trying to get in and out of the stadium without causing any issues. The way the treat them is most often with an attitude of guilty until they get home. It becomes so obvious from being there when you see the difference in how they interact with people who are just walking through the area in comparison to anybody wearing a football shirt

Both clubs are from two of Poland’s biggest cities, and both play in stadiums built for Euro 2012 with capacities of over 40,000, which are now way too big for both teams. Now both clubs average about 5-10,000 people at matches, well short of capacity. It looks like both stadiums are possibly white elephants. Shame because they’re both fantastic cities.

Godfrey Poku to Southport from Luton... Southport should have been relegated from the National League National the season before (having been reprieved at the post season National League AGM due to another club (Rushden and Diamonds?) announcing it was going out of business, a semi-regular situation that's been nicknamed the "AGM Cup"). We got Poku and another player on loan for half a season as part of a deal transferring John Paul Kissock to Luton- we were all gloomy at first as Kissock was something of a flair player, but the team's performances that season were great, with 8 away wins in a row (including six where we scored three goals) although the home form wasn't quite as good. The performances dropped off slightly after the loan period ended but we still managed to maintain a decent level of form such that we were still in contention for a playoff place going into April, which, for a part time club in a mostly professional league, was definitely punching above our weight.

I love videos with discussions like these. The crackdown on peaceful protests in countries which are meant to have strong democratic institutions is truly abhorrent & just another way for the rich & powerful to be able to continue pretending that they have no real opposition.
And I genuinely think that 95% of the people who freak out whenever football (or any other cultural touchstone like film or music) and politics are mentioned in the same sentence are just conservatives who are upset because they know they're about to hear a bunch of critiques about policies and beliefs they hold. Because any reasonable person realises that virtually EVERYTHING is linked in some way to politics and can listen to a reasonable discussion about either topic.

Your videos are always top notch, full of information, incredibly funny (when they’re supposed to be) & show compassion. But I must admit that this might be one of your best. The world is political. Football is political. I might not be British but as an American… we’ve seen the rise of quasi fascism/ authoritarianism in the US through Trump and his knuckle dragging red hats. And so it’s good to see Political Alfie make an appearance. Your politics arent hard to guess from your some of your commentary in your videos. But you really hit a necessary soapbox because football is such a huge industry, cultural movement, etc. The largeness of the FA is like having a country inside of your country. It’s like the British Vatican (football as religion). I loved the way you showed a history of demonstrations/ protests over time and then bring it all together regarding football. Bravo, Alfie!!! ✌🏽❤️⚽️🍄

Good analysis Alfie. It is authoritarian already in the UK. There were two real reasons for Brexit.
    1. New EU rules on putting millions into tax havens which is why the richest MPs were pro-Brexit.
    2. So that we can ignore human rights that were protected under EU law.
Never been so ashamed to be British. My grandparents fought a far-right regime in WWII and would be horrified that the UK is becoming one now.

I have lived in European countries that aren't in the EU. They are thriving. The difference is the way they are able to vote and who is able to run for office and with how much funding (I.e. direct democracy in Switzerland).

The owners and moderate middle and upper class fans (hardly actual fans, more like customers) are unlikely to not support authoritarian measures in the name of safety and social peace. So ther you have it, the next episode of a reactionary attack to whatever could rally people behind an idea, namely a radical one. Hopefully one reaps what one sows. Great video Alfie!

Alfie as fellow lefty I have to say the insinuation that Extinction rebellion is overall or overwhelmingly popular in the U.K. seems glaringly out of touch, I’m certain polling data suggests otherwise, and anecdotally as someone who lives in a very liberal non religious part of the U.K. I think particularly for over 40s it’s extremely unpopular. I agree with their message and their right to demonstrate of course, and I agree they are fairly moderate in terms of their means of protest particularly speaking historically.
