i bought these thinking i was fooled into making a purchase but this whole time ive been harboring amazing markers the whole time!! i didnt even know how to use them and this video showed me so much!! thank you for making this video for people are are a little lost like me, very appreciative.
+phoenix d Hi phoenix - Happy to help. These markers are really outstanding. I still use them a lot and they haven't run out of ink yet. Have a fantastic day - Marty
Wow I have been looking for watercolour markers for ages and been let down, these look great. I would love to see more of your urban drawing/paintings with these. Thanks for making me smile.
Hi +char deplate - I'm sorry I can't reply directly to your comments, I think you need to change your settings. If you read this, I think you may have a leaky or bad pen. It shouldn't be overly wet unless you squeeze out the water. Thanks for leaving a comment.
I picked up a few of the colors open stock to try out and they arrived on thursday, they are really nice!
Interesting, I was just checking these out at Michael's yesterday afternoon. Thanks Marty for doing a demo of these interesting markers. One more thing to add to my growing list of new toys.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich - Hi Lindsay - Very interested in your overall impressions? Do you think I was on track in my review of these? Have you reviewed them yet?
Elizabeth Kilbride Hi Elizabeth - Happy to do it. If you can get open stock and try a couple, let me know what you think of them. I'm interested in hearing others opinions. Happy drawing.
will do
thank you cant wait to try the new watercolor pens
I suck at drawing, being an industrial engeneer and everything, and I did my fair share of watercoloring that I absolutely love, it's a very hard technique made easy by these markers! Great vid! Thanks for enhancing the imagination!
And no, some link is deeply broken between my brain and hands, that no practice will improve!
Thank you Susazeu. The distance between the artist brain and the hand is always made shorter through practice. :-)
thanks! i just got these marker only 6 basic colors, and theyre so much fun!
They are so nice. I love these still.
Thank you Marty! Another great review! Have a wonderful week. Spring is on its way!
Denise Chapel - Hi Denise - Thank you very much! Yes, it was almost 70 degrees here in the Northland and I definitely have cabin fever. Hoping the flowers bloom early this year! Have a great week.
Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. Very cool markers.
Hi Melodie Fairburn - Happy to do it. Thanks for the kind note and for checking out the video, much appreciated.
Am watching this again. Wonderful Markers by Winsor & Newton. I liked the tutorial. Thanks a lot.
+Don't Be Sad - Thank you for watching, twice. :-) - Marty
Wonderful work! Those pens look great.
Julie Boeck Hi Julie - These are really great. I am having such an awesome time using them. I think you'd love these. The link in my description has them on sale at Amazon. :-) Thanks for the note by the way.
I bought these while looking for something new to try and I was completely lost when they arrived. I really appreciate this video and your demonstration of how they work!
Glad I could help! Thank you for watching and commenting Shannon.
OMG, I need these!!!
I got a few of these as a gift recently, without really knowing much about them. They're a little hard to get used to at first, but I've made some pretty good stuff using them.
Thanks for the demo. You make me want to purchase some watercolor markers. I love the bright colors!
+Lisa Morgan Hi Lisa - If you do buy them, let me know what you think. Thanks for watching. - Marty
Thank you for sharing I have a set and I really haven't used them. You have inspired me to get them out thanks!!!
Jennifer Hammond Hi Jennifer - Thanks for the note. I'd be interested to hear what you think of them once you've given them a try. Thanks for checking out the video! Have a great day.
Thanks so much for this review. Very helpful, I'm pretty much sold now!
Thank you for watching Leona. Have a great weekend! ~Marty
Fantastic video, Owings. I just ordered my watercolor markers, I'm looking forward to having a blast with them.
They are really fun to use!!!
Excellent review! Paired with a water brush these seem perfect for travelling with- no worrying about mess and mixing palettes . I might have to get myself some one day!
Hi Claudia - They are really awesome. And great if you're new to watercolor. :-) ~Marty
I'm thankful that the video showed how the markers could be used like watercolors to create washes, because the initial results I got on regular Canson watercolor paper were awful! Too much absorption, so the color left "marker marks" instead of a smooth wash. For others wondering what papers work well, I had good results with Arches--the markers performed just like any other watercolors once I had the right paper. I really appreciate the demo, thank you!
Hi Diana - Sorry for the delayed response. I agree with you. This is an interesting product but it does not impress me overall. The lightfastness is the selling feature here, but that does not make up for the expense and other issues. ~Marty
i was on the fence about these markers in going back to the store to purchase today after watching your video again!
You won't be disappointed, they are amazing to use.
So glad you decided to review these, I saw them in the store awhile back and thought about getting them but wanted to check reviews first. I think I might pick up a set, they look really fun to work with. I love the look of watercolour but the lack of control always scares me away.
Serena Brann Hi Serena - That's a common fear among Artists I know. They worry a lot about the lack of control with watercolor and I think this will really help many people get past that. Plus, they really are a blast to work with. Thanks for the note and let me know if you pick some up.
nice review, I would love some of these pens.
Hi Tina Fisher - These are really awesome. I got them on sale so that helped. :-)
Hi! I just received my first W&N marker in an Artsnacks box -- love seeing your work and hearing your opinions. Sill valid (and welcome!) two years later. Best to you.
Hi Maria - Thank you so much for the not. Hope you like them. I still use mine and love them! ~Marty
Those markers are amazing, and your pencil is one of my favorites.
Need Art Now - Thanks for the note and comment on the pencil. I am really impressed by these markers, they are really awesome and fun to use. The thing is, you don't have to use much to get great color and effects so I see them lasting a good long while, which makes them a value. Have a great day and thanks as always for watching. :-)
I bought it, and, tried out just today, on a watercolor Fabriano paper! It has a good luminousity, and its spreads well leaving a good amount of pigmentation! I like it!
So good to hear that you like them. I think they are one of the best products made by W&N.
Thanks very much for this review. I was curious about these when I saw them in my local art store, but am super-intimidated by watercolors, so they seemed like a good fit, since I am very comfortable with the marker format. I will definitely be picking up a few of these to play with.
silvertales Hi and thank you very much for the comments. I think these are great for people that might be intimidated by watercolors, but to be honest there is no reason to be. Watercolors are so much fun, if you set aside the desire to be hyper realistic with them and just sketch. This marker format will help get you gradually more comfortable, but don't be too worried about it because paper is cheap and you can always start over. :-) That's the great part about art, it's all practice. Well I wish you the best of luck and please don't be a stranger to the channel.
Great demo! I have a set of these markers but haven't yet played with them. You got me going! Thanks.
Enjoy Susan. They are quite good.
That's what I am discovering. Love them!
Nice sketch
Thank you Chriss.
I love your videos. They are so helpful ^.^
+nightstar1219 - Thank you very much. I appreciate that took the time to comment and to watch. Have a great day!
I found these markers at Michael's and bought a set of 6 for $29.99 and used a 40% off coupon and liked them so much, went back and got another 6 set and a set of 3 with 40% off, but wanted a couple more colors that I found at my local brick and mortar store in Florida. Lindsay, the Frugal Crafter discovered they come apart easily to refill when they run out of watercolor. Thanks for the demo!
Paula
paulage1art Hi Paula - You got a great deal. I love the Michaels coupons and use them myself. Where does Lindsay get the fluid to refill them? Thanks for the note by the way and oh yeah, what's the name of the Art store in Florida you go to? I like the mom & pop art stores, but they are disappearing.
Owings Art Lindsay mentioned during her demo that she accidentally opened up the marker taking the cap off and said they would be easy to refill with watercolor. I will ask her but in the past she has recommended the Dick Blick liquid watercolors for refilling the water brush style pens and making spray colors (and adding the pearl watercolor for shimmer.) The watercolor is really nice and crazy cheap - for a 4 ounce bottle it is $2.52 and 8 oounce is $3.99.. The set of ten 8 ounce bottles is $33.22. These are dye based and the description says some colors may fade, but as Lindsay says - "You would need to throw away the marker when it's dry, so you have nothing to lose." I have a Jerry's Artarama here in West Palm Beach Florida but they do not match internet prices of the same name. Guess the brick and mortar stores have to pay the rent and electric somehow. I do love to see and feel art supplies in person when I can, but these stores are a dying breed!
paulage1art Hi Paula - Thanks for the note. You're right, if they're going to go to waste, why not refill them and still get some use. I like the idea as long as I don't mix them up with my originals. It's too bad the Jerry's doesn't honor it's online prices, as I think most stores do just that. At any rate I appreciate the quick response and the information. Have a wonderful day!
Very nice review and demo, thanks. Let us know what your light fast test reveals. I'm about to release a video review of these markers next week.
Steve Mitchell Design Hi Steve - Thanks for leaving a note and the comments. Happy to report that the test is nearly complete and the Winsor & Newton have held up nicely. I was surprised at the lighter colors, they actually did better than I thought they would. Slight fading in the reds and deep blues, but solid overall when compared to other similar watercolors. Thanks again and I'll check out your review when you post.
great review, thank you!
Namaste H. Surely. Thanks for leaving the comment.
+Namaste H. (Namastelh) Thank you and Namaste to you. :-)
The beauty of these is the possibility of drawing with them: creating a line that can be a line, or be blurred into rich colour, or both. But if you're just using them as watercolours you'd be better off with actual watercolours, then you'd have more freedom of movement and stroke, as well as the potential for more dynamic mark making.
Wow! These look superb! I'm a huge fan of anything watercolor and these look like fantastic markers. I've also been very pleased with Winsor & Newton purchases. I have a size 2 kolinsky sable brush I recently got for the holidays by Winsor & Newton and the precision on that brush is out of this world. The watercolors I have under their name are also something I'm very pleased with. Thank you for another awesome review. I'm definitely adding this to my "want" list.
Hi KLDraco - Thanks for checking them out, they really are spectacular. Wondering if you're using the Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor or the Professional series, because there is a significant difference. The Cotman are more student grade (still good) and the Professional's are Artist grade. Also, Kolinsky are some of the best brushes I've ever used, you have excellent taste. :-) Thanks for dropping by KL, let me know about the W&N's. Have a great day.
Hi Owings Art - I have a couple cotman W&N watercolors. I have yet to try the artist quality brand. The cotman though were a significant improvement over the Reeve's watercolor I started with. The more and more I discover about even higher quality brands, the longer my "want" list becomes =) And thanks for agreeing with the kolinsky brush. I always do massive research before doing any purchases on art supplies. I've discovered that sumi-e brushes are also excellent for precise lines. Just like the kolinsky, the brushes have a huge "belly" for holding in any pigment and then release so delicately for a long time. I've been leaning more towards brushes for outline work over using a calligraphy pens lately. THe one that Ihaven't quite found a "happy ground" on is paper. What kind of paper would you recommend for watercolor? I have bought 150 lb strathmore paper but wasn't too happy with it. It still left those little "paper scrubs" after just a couple coats of paint. I've heard Archies is good paper. What is your recommendation?
KLDraco Hi KL - You're asking a great question. It's also a really subjective one. I happen to agree with what you've heard about Arches. Arches is a great watercolor paper, just make sure you get the heavier stuff like the 150lb or higher. I also use Fabriano 100% cotton cold press and Bockingford paper. These are all great papers and I don't think you'll have the problem you describe above, unless you really soak it and rough it up while its still wet.
Then it comes down to whether you like Hot or Cold press. I actually use the hot press because I like a smoother surface, but most traditional watercolorists think I'm crazy and that to use a hot press (smooth paper) defeats the purpose. Even so, I like it, probably because I started out as a Drafter and we used vellum (smooth).
Get the heavier papers when you can and try to get 100% cotton rag. It might seem okay to save a few bucks on cheaper paper, but you end up paying for it in the end. So spend what you can on the best quality you can afford and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Hope that helps.
Owings Art - Thank you for the advice. Actually, I don't think that's too crazy to like the hot press. I've used Bristol board for some of my mixed medium pieces and really liked how the materials glided across the paper. When I do graphite drawings however, I prefer the tooth in the paper. I've found with drawings I like using pastel paper for the "tooth". For "watercolor" paper I've tried, it's all been cold press, but also having that annoying little pieces of paper problem however. Of course, that would have to do with the quality of the paper. the next time I go art shopping, I should get a pad of each type (higher quality) and see which I do prefer in the end. ( because I've liked Bristol, perhaps I'll like the hot press better).
Thanks KLDraco and good luck. Be sure to stop back and let me know how you do with the various papers. Thanks again for the question and for checking out the video.
thanks for the review I've been eying these babies. Water colour markers are big in the mixed media world. Shannon
Art Junkie Thanks for the note Shannon. What other brands of watercolor markers have you tried?
Ive tried ranger which suck and Spectrum Noir which are nice but not awesome so Im still looking for the ultimate pigment. Sounds like these would be great. Winsor Newton always produces great. Thanks Shannon
Art Junkie Okay, thanks for the heads up on Ranger. I mostly use Copic, which are simply the best, but expensive. I use these for sketching in the field and inking graphic work. Thanks Shannon.
Awesome markers!! I will have to check them out! Also, I have been hearing about the oil sticks. Both would be great to have! I love multimedia. Minnesota....my home state. I miss it.
They are pretty sweet. Hope you give them a try. - Hello from good ole Saint Paul, in your old home state, Minnesota. :-) ~Marty
Owings Art 😊Hello from Texas!!
+Kiranna Marie - Unfortunately your settings do not allow me to reply directly. No the set does not come with the water pen. That it sold separately. Good luck.
which water pen did you use?
awesome videos
***** Thank you Michelle. I appreciate the support. Thanks for checking it out.
Thanks, veryinformative::::::: I've just subbed
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and testing out these marvellous markers :) FYI, on 2 Dec 2015 you have 5555 subscribers! What a fabulous number :)
+Jenny James Hi Jenny - Thank you for the kind comment. I am always humbled and surprised by the number of people who've subscribed to the channel. - Marty
great review! i've wondered about these for a while and this gives me a better understanding of their capabilities. i was shocked to see you sneak them into your top 5 favorite watercolors- so i thought id learn more. really interesting!
i'm a m.graham enthusiast myself- but i just used Christmas money to purchase a huge tin of senneliers. I've wanted to try them forever and your thoughts on them was really encouraging. i love the honey binding watercolors- but the grahams are difficult to pan and travel with because of how sticky they are. i mostly have been traveling with winsor and new. but expanding the family to senneliers feels like the biggest step in my watercolor path.
truly appreciated your thoughts on those paints bc after pushing the purchase button i second guessed myself on such a large price point. hahaha so i ran to youtube in hopes people would validate the buy. hahahahahahahahaha no regrets now. excited for them to come.
just found your channel and i've really enjoyed it! thanks!!!
I think you made an excellent choice. You will NOT be disappointed with Sennelier.
super !
Thanks for this useful video :)
Lu Maquiyonkis Thank you for the kind comment. Have a great day!
Thanks for this demo, I have wondered about how they work. You also have very nice handwriting. Have you notice a problem with too much water from water pens? I don't know if I am using mine wrong or if it isn't a good pen. I have three and one is almost too wet to work with. I dab if off but it still drips a lot.
Huh I wonder if these are similar to WN pan or tube watercolors. I have a couple colors at open, bought them open stock at Jerrys, and I really like them!
What type of water pen did you use? This review, and all your reviews are really fantastic. Not only for products I'm researching on my own (how I found you) but also in how you demonstrate products I've never thought about using. (like these pens, which I'm seriously considering now). Thank you for doing them.
Hi There ***** - I used a Pentel water pen (medium) I believe. I placed a link below to Amazon which has them on sale right now. Thank you also for the kind comments and I'm very happy to help, I love doing the reviews. I think you'd really like these pens, I know I do and they really are fantastic. Let me know if you get them and what you think of them.
Here is a link to the water pen: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027A5J8O/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0027A5J8O&linkCode=as2&tag=owiart-20&linkId=PR5HGG6G3GCONF76
I actually really like these markers, you can buy them open Stock and build your own colors because there are a lot of colors that come in the regular sets that I don't even use. Have you found any information on refilling these markers?
Nice review! I just ordered some of these the other day along with the Pentel Aquash waterbrush, Pentel Pocket brush pen and some Strathmore 500 series Mixed Media board. Plan on trying my hand at some mixed media. Quick question, coming from a oil painting background, and having limited experience with watercolors, how difficult is it to control paint flow and blending with these? And will they stand up over time if I decide to sell my artwork created with these? Thanks for any advice :-)
thank you!
+Pascal Dickhoff Anytime. - Marty
I know this video was awhile ago but does the water pen come with the the watercolour pens? Or will I have to buy one myself
Another art supply to try out ;)
These are pretty cool.
Lol, you missed to colour inside the letter C! :D
Nice drawing!
And very good review! :3
Hi! Just wondering how the lightfast test went?
I am so keen to get these as I want the colour to stand the test of time :-)
Look forward to your answer :-)
This is so helpful!! Maybe I missed it, but what kind of paper were you working on for this?
I think it was Canson.
I really enjoyed this review, I'm going to consider these, I do have a question though. In terms of money, Lightfastness and quality which would you recommend, these W & N, the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer or the Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelle? Thanks Marty!
+Hermione Jarvis Hi Hermione - Considering all those factors, I'd have to recommend FC Albrecht Duerer. They are going to hit all the requirements, without breaking the bank. Here are some additional thoughts though:
The W&N WC Markers are different because they're markers, so they will have different effects and applications.
The Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle's are going to give you very outstanding and vivid colors, while being extremely high quality. They're also going to cost plenty. :-) They will be the most expensive of all these choices.
The FC Albrecht Duerer are high quality, great color and excellent lightfastness for an all-around excellent experience. When you consider their cost, they are a really great value.
Hope that helps!
- Marty
Thank you for the great review! I just purchased a set. What kind of paper are you using? Do you recommend the W&N marker paper?
Tiffany Asbury - Thank you Tiffany. The paper is Arches watercolor paper and is 100% cotton, cold press. It's really great paper and I would it over the W&N marker paper. Hope that helps! Thanks again.
I'd like to use a water pen but I'm concerned about the nib being stained by another colour. Is this a common issue? Do you have multiple pens or does it come off easy?
These look great. Did you do a light fastness test? You mentioned it in the video but then didn't mention results. Thanks!
Hi Barbara - The test is still underway, but I am happy to report that after more than 18 months, most all of the colors have held up nicely. Some of the lighter colors have experienced some fading, but nothing terrible. I can recommend these for sure. ~Marty
Great art! Can I ask what paper or sketchbook you were using? Was it specific watercolor paper or a multi media sketchbook?
Hi There - That is a Canson XL Multimedia sketchbook. :-)
Thank you for the great review. I love all water based mediums and these seem to be wonderful pens. What do you think of the nibs in comparison to the Tombow Dual Brush pens? I really like the Tombow brush nib but after a few hours of use it starts fraying. PS: Your test page looks like a little piece of art itself. Beautiful handwriting!
Anja Meurer Thank you Anja. I know exactly what you mean about the Tombow Dual Brushes, however I recently got a new set and the problem of fraying wasn't as bad. I don't know, maybe I just got a good batch. These pens are really great though and I didn't experience any fraying. Thanks for the comment about my handwriting, I spend many years as a draftsman. :-) Have a great day and please stop by again.
+Owings Art I recently bought a small set of those watercolour markers but didn't give them a try yet. Did you notice that Winsor & Newton offers another new marker? They call them 'pigment markers' , 120 colours and lightfast. So far i couldn't find much information about them.
www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-and-newton-pigment-markers/
Anja Meurer I hadn't heard of these until another subscriber mentioned them to me the other day. I'll have to give them try to see how they are. Thanks Anja.
Nice video, loved the swatches of each color! What was the water pen you used? Looks handy :) Starting to get into watercolor!
+jaidacv That was a Caran d'Ache water pen. You can pick one up here: amzn.to/1WEhbF9
+Owings Art Thanks so much! Just subscribed c:
jaidacv Thank you!
thanks for shring, do you know if they are refillable?
Maaike Uijthoven Thanks for the note Maaike. They are not marketed as refillable. I'm sure some intrepid Artist has tried to refill them though, but I don't recommend it. The great thing about these though is that they are loaded with great, bright pigment, so I find I have to use very little. Hope that helps. Have a great day!
i just finished my first drawing with them
i also bought this set and I was really impressed by the vibrancy and the colors looked great
i used a plate as a palette
im not sure if i like them or not though
they behave differently, you cant really lift them, i think they get muddy very easily and one could buy a decent watercolor set for the prize
personally I would have needed more colors
like payne's grey, burnt sienna
do you know why one would choose them over normal watercolors?
Yes, I think so. I believe the people like these because they can get a sort of precision from them. In other words if they're used to working with markers and never worked with watercolors, it's a low barrier and not so intimidating. ~Marty
As always a wonderful review. Is there any real advantage to using these markers rather than straight watercolour? Thanks.
Hi There muskndusk - Thanks for the great question. For me it comes down to precision and being able to really control the watercolor well. If you're already an accomplished watercolorist, it might not seem like such a great advantage because you may already know how to control the watercolors very well, but for new or intermediate painters it could be a real advantage.
Also, I like the effects you can get with these, blending and layering. When using them like a marker you can get some really cool effects wet on wet or wet on dry. It's a faster process than using traditional watercolors I think, although that may just be me. That said I also like that I can use them in tandem with my traditional Schmincke or Winsor & Newton watercolor paints.
Lastly, they're just a different approach and something new to try out. It might take a little while for Artists to accept these, but from my standpoint I just love trying new things and experimenting as there is always an element of learning in there.
They aren't super cheap, but they are also not overly expensive so I decided what the heck.
Hope that makes sense and thanks as always for checking out the video and leaving a great question.
I'm french so my english might suck, but oh well... I think they are also good for travelling, since they are used just like markers.
Carole-Anne Girard Yes, exactly Carole-Anne.
Marty, guess what? They had a 3 pack (burnt sienna, raw sienna, and raw umber) on sale for $1.49. Huge score !!!!
Hi Kate - That's crazy! Seriously, $1.49?
I couldn't believe it. Feeling super stoked !
Kate The Sleepy Teacher Lucky gal.
How did the light fast test turn out? Curious to know. Thanks!
+Kay Rodriques Hi Kay - Good news, the lightfast tests turned out pretty good. They held up well, with some fading, but not dramatic. I can recommend these. Thanks for the question Kay. - Marty
what kind of paper did you used? i got one and i use it with Canson wc paper but it not quite work with these wc marker
+LySanBooby Hi And thank you for the note. I used a Canson Mixed Media sketchbook in the video. Thank you!
Between normal winsor & newton watercolors, and watercolor markers, which one would you recommend for a starter?
Hi Milyusia Arts - Thanks for the question. Windsor & Newton makes two kinds of watercolors, Cotman and Professional. One is a student grade (Cotman) and the other is Artist grade (Professional). These markers are more comparable to the Professional watercolors and they really are great. Thanks again for the note and the question.
hi! what kind of paper are you using?
because the markers doesnt blend too much in the watercolor paper that i use, it leave like a halo of the marker...
Try a Bristol or a cold pressed paper. :-)
Hello !
What is the other brush like marker you use to blend ?
Pentel?
wow they are really great (: super video 👍 can you tell me what pencil you used for writing the name of the pencil colours? :D
+Marlene Meininger Sure, that is a Copic Multiliner SP ink pen. :-)
+Owings Art Thank you 😊
Thank thou so much. I was wondering if they would be worth the investment. Do they need to be refilled? How much poor needs to be laid down to get a good payoff? Things like that. Still not sure about telling BUT, you answered my most important questions. I really appreciate you sharing with us.
Hi gypsyheart79 - Hey thank you for the nice note. Yes these are great, but they are not refillable. You don't need very much at all to get color so I think these will last a long time, but time will tell. Thanks again and have a great day!
Marty, I just got to watch this. I put it off because I've wanted those for some time. On your sketch you did the same thing again with the windows?! LoL I was going to mention too if you ever see a good white gel pen that is very opaque (even white out in a pen form works as well) leave it in your sketch kit, It's great to clean up the sign lettering and I like to use it for light reflection lines on window glass. Just gives the work a nice little boost people like it when I add that effect. Watercolor painters use them to sign their work with too over the colored areas, something pretty cool when it's used the right way. Good video review again :)
Joe Cwik Hi Joe - You're right about my windows, old habits die hard. All my drawings used to lean to the right, took me years to sort that out...lol. Hey I'm glad you mentioned the gel pen, that's a good idea. I use the Uniball Signo broad gel pen. Below is a link to it. Thanks for the ideas and the comments as always friend. Have a fantastic day! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JRGBH5K/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00JRGBH5K&linkCode=as2&tag=owiart-20&linkId=CWXUNBWSW3BW7BPU
Owings Art That pen would do the trick. On your next building when you begin your sketch draw the first window how it might appear then lay out two lines (tops and bottoms) to the far side ... keeping perspective. THEN block them in and remember that as the go away the back edges (recesses) are all the viewer will be able to see. (most of the back ones you can't even see the glass, just the inside edges) It should right away be more apparent with the perspectives laid out. Just my observations and I couldn't free hand out a building like you are but every little trick in the tool box is what makes all this 'art stuff' even possible. You probably know this but yrs ago in college I remember the instructor drilling in our brain that windows and especially the storm shutters are often wrong in even architectural renderings. He was right and I see them wrong in all forms of art, esp the shutters that are almost hanging sideways on a wall ;) Try two lines and see if it reminds you, that should help a lot.
Joe Cwik Hi Joe - Thank you those are great tips and reminders. I am definitely going to try that and also to slow down a little. I'm always in a hurry and find that when I'm impatient my drawings suffer. I really appreciate the helpful advice and will apply it. I've also noticed that most windows and shutters look funky on drawings, but that's actually encouraging because I'm glad my artists eye can pick up the inconsistencies. This should help me in my own work if I slow down and follow your advice. Hope you're enjoying what's left of the weekend my friend.
wow that is eye candy I must say you're really lucky
+aditya m Lucky or good. ;-) - Ha! - Marty
would paintbrushes work instead of watermarker ?
Sure, but the whole point of these is that they are markers so you can get some different effects or precision that maybe a beginner or intermediate might appreciate. Brushes are cool to though. Thanks fort he question. Have a great day!!! ~Marty
what will they think of next
I know right!
thanks for the vid! what type of paper did you use?
I think this was Canson XL sketch pad. :-)
+Owings Art That's mixed media paper, right? Or is it Watercolor paper?
Dishkitty Studio Mixed Media. For watercolor I can use either Arches, or I also use Stillman & Birn's heavyweight sketchbooks. :-)
Was paints gray a marker or did you mix umber w blue?
Susan Klepper It was it's own marker. :-)
These look great! What kind of water pen is that?
Eljo Agenbach Hi Eljo - That's a Pentel water pen and it works great. Thanks for the question and for checking out the video.
awesome, thanks for the info!
Eljo Agenbach Surely.
what is your opion of spectrum noir markers?
Hi Denisa - I haven't tried them yet.
on which kind of paper do they work best?
+Veronica Marchetti It depends on what you're trying to achieve. I had good luck using them on Bristol type paper and smoother watercolor papers. - Marty
Can anyone tell me a good brand for the water pen? I have this kit just need the water pen brush. It's also a gift, thanks
I use the Pentel. It's excellent and I've reviewed them in every size. :-)
@@owingsart Thank you!!
I’m sitting here drawing the square swatches along with you…. But my swatches don’t bleed all pretty when I add water with my water pen. They stay stagnant like it’s regular marker:’( idk what I’m doing wrong???? I only have 6 of the set, which I inherited from some family.
Hmmmm, do you know how old they are?
Hi I’m just new to markers see these winsor & newtown markers are they lightfast
When they run out do you need to refill them 🤔🤔🤔
I’m not sure I don’t have these (yet) but I heard in other reviews of these markers that you can’t refill them, unfortunately
Ok which ones are best to get for drawing pro markers or brushmarkers
I must be missing a trick with these i draw a swatch square then use a waterbrush to try and smudge it but all i manage to make is a very lightly tinted water the square is very much there edges defined still help
No trick really. Not sure what's going on. Maybe a bad pen?
@@owingsart i got to the bottom of it it was the paper (cass art watercolour) but using canson xl mixed media works a treat thanks for getting back figured id reply incase anyone has similar problems
Angela - Ahhh, yep that’ll do it. Glad you sorted it out. 👍🏻
I think I know where that building is. Your studio is in Lowertown? I wonder if I've seen some of your stuff in one of the art crawls? I can't remember. Anyways neat to be watching some videos and be like hey I know where that is, lol.
+BugFolk Hi There - My studio is in Maplewood, but I've had work at the art crawls. Small world. :-) Thanks for leaving me a note. Are you an Artist (St.Paul)?
+Owings Art Small world indeed! I was watching your product reviews first, but then your comments and drawings were what clued me in. I'm in St Paul, no studio just my tiny apartment, but it is a dream. I am returning to art after a long hiatus of about 5+ years. Carpel tunnel killed my motivation for drawing until I recently got surgery. I do 3d things though. I cast flowers and leaves from life, paint them with acrylics, watercolors or pan pastels to give life like realism. So far I've got some of my life castings for sale at Three Sister's Eclectic Arts around Grand and Victoria.
BugFolk Wow! That's great to hear. I'll have to check out your work next time I'm in the area. I go up to Grand a lot to Wet Paint and Irish On Grand. Are you going to have anything at the Art Crawl this weekend?
+Owings Art Nope, but I plan to walk around tonight wearing some of my leaf castings (yellow, autumn themed, elm leaves as earrings). If anyone asks, then I'll give them a heads up where they can be found and purchased. I visited Three Sisters this afternoon. They will have fliers out during the art crawl. It sounds overall, they really need help getting people to visit their store. They had just moved this year from the Lowertown area. Are you having anything at the crawl this weekend?
BugFolk Nope, nothing this time around, but I have a show at the Claddagh Cafe on 7th Street coming up with a good friend in November and then I have a solo show up at Nina's cafe on Cathedral Hill. Have fun this weekend.
Great review! So how much did you pay for the set?
SuperFlawless9 Hey Super - Thanks for the note. These are little under $45, but i picked up 4 more in open stock because I liked them so much, so now I have 16 and might pick up a few more. These are really impressive and fun to use especially for sketching. Pretty cool.
Owings Art I'll definitely try them someday once I get the funds to do so! thanks for the answer.
Great video! I'm going to buy these!! They look fun to use.. Thanks :) I just subbed to you too :D
Thank you Lauren. Welcome to the channel. -Marty
can you review zig clean color markers??
Hi Candy - They are on my list. :-) ~Marty
Have you seen the new Winsor & Newton pigment markers? They're a little expensive but they're supposed to be different from regular markers.
+RedStarLights Yes I have seen them and although they're very expensive I plan to test them soon. I've heard some mixed reviews about them so we'll have to see. Thanks for watching and please stay tuned. :-)
Owings Art
I look forward to it!
Hi Marty, what papers do you find yourself using with these Markers? I have found so far that the only one that seems to work is Canson XL Mixed Media paper. Do you have any other recommendations? It seems that watercolor paper just absorbs it too fast that you can't get any wash or bleed effect.
Hi Panda - yes I know what you mean. I also use the very great Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbooks. The have heavier paper and the colors don't bleed. They aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for in the end.
+Owings Art Yup. I have a few of the Stilman and Birn sketchbooks that I've used for a few years. Sketchbook addict here lol. I've still found that in the ones I have, it barely acts as a Watercolour marker and rather just a marker (I have the hot pressed and the ivory cold pressed). It's interesting that it seems to work so well on the XL Mixed Media sketchbook but not on others. I'm wondering how hey are on illustration board or Bristol board. With their new pigment markers, I've heard similar complaints. That it doesn't move on anything other than their proprietary Winsor & Newton Pigment Marker Paper but their rep told me it can be used on gessoed canvas also (which is probably how I would use it to be honest). Thanks for responding! Hope you have a great Thanksgiving week with your family! - Terrius of MyPandaPaints
+Owings Art Oh I forgot to add, I actually purchase the Stillman & Birn sketchbooks from Aaron brothers who often have them at buy one get one free!
My Panda Paints Hi Terrius - Okay I just tried them on some Bristol board (at your suggestion) and they work pretty good. I didn't get much bleed if any. I also tried them on a piece of gessoed board I have laying around and again, no problems. I am going to try the pigment markers soon, but I'm not in a hurry. Check your Stillman & Birn to make sure you're trying them on the Zeta Series, they are the only ones I own and these work great on those for me. Happy Thanksgiving my friend. Let me know what you decide to try. - Marty
My Panda Paints Great tip. Thank you. I spend a fortune on them.
Marty I have just made a discovery. Pfieffer hand made mica water colour paints. I was wondering if you could do a review on them? They are pricey but they have nice, hefty dot cards. Thanks
Do you have a link to them Susan? Sounds intriguing....

There you go! I hope to try them out. Just the names she chose for her colours gets me right in the soul. :)
On second viewing they are no more expensive than many others.
which water pen did you use?
Pantel Aquash. You can get one here for a steal: amzn.to/2lr2Ss5
Thank you!
It's no problem I'm also a artist to
***** That's fantastic. :-)

+Isabelle Finnegan Hi Isabelle - What part of the world are you in?
+Owings Art Ireland
Isabelle Finnegan Try Jackson Art in the UK. I understand that shipping is very reasonable to the Free State. :-)

They are on my list. :-)
+Owings Art thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also nupastels
Almost 7000 views on this video!
My Panda Paints Wow! Thank you for pointing that out, I had no idea it had that many views, that's just crazy. I feel so humbled that people are actually even interested. I started doing this just to share a few thoughts about the gear and techniques I use and I can't believe how it has grown, thanks to great people like you. Feeling blessed.
hi, greetings from México, im interested in painting with this marker, the water marker is included with the rest? do u knwo it?
Hi David - No, the water pen is a separate purchase. It does NOT come with the set. ~Marty
Hi, thanks for introducing interesting tools. I liked your voice and how kindly you wrote downing each name of the color markers. But on the send half of the video, I think you are fasting forwarding too fast. For me, I could have watched your painting without editing.
+nabi767 Ahh, thank you so much for the comment Nabi767. I really appreciate you watching. Most people are bored watching me paint, so I fast forward past the dull parts (most of the time). Have a great day and keep watching!
Paines (?) Gray
Susan Klepper I bought it loose, it doesn't come in the set. :-)
