Thank you. I'm one of the inmates that helped save Deputy Hobbs. I finally got released a month ago. I'm glad to be free and honored to be labeled as a HERO. I'm doing very well. I could spend 30min telling you everything positive I've accomplished since my release and less than 30 seconds telling you the negative. So. I'm doing AWESOME and hope Deputy Hobbs is still doing good. Thank you, Terry Loveless

My husband worked in corrections as an officer for five years. He always treated the inmates with respect whereas some didn’t. One night he was in the gym and told an inmate to stop throwing the ball so that it would go up and hit the lights. All my husband had for protection was a radio and a flashlight. That inmate came over and got all up on him threatening him. The other inmates came and formed a circle around him until help came. They told him they always had his back.
The other thing was, we’d be in Walmart or somewhere and person that had been in there, more than a few times, would see us and start talking to him and telling him how they were doing and thanked him for what a good guy he was to them.

I was a prison officer and I can attest that most of the time they aren't bad people, they made bad decisions. Their background can be wildly varied, but the main thing to remember is to treat them as people and respect them. I stood up in front of the governor a few times to testify on an inmates behalf if I felt they were being unfairly accused of rule breaking, or they were peripheral to an incident. I've been caught in a couple of riots and had inmates let me out of the area so I didn't get hurt because "He's one of the good ones guys". It wasn't my place to judge them on their crimes, that was done by the courts. Treat people with respect and fairness and you never know when it will be returned to you when you need it most.

Only something like 25% of people incarcerated are in jail for violent crimes. The other 75% are in for things like property crimes, drug offenses and "public offenses" like DUI or public drunkenness or public disturbance and things like that. The stats are different for prison inmates- I think about half violent offenses and half nonviolent- but that makes sense as sentences will be higher (so outside of jail timefranes) for many violent offenses.

A few years later, one of the inmates who had been a regular part of our services needed a place to stay.. he became my roommate in my condo for 3 years and is still a close friend till this day! The three men, during the interview, seemed quietly happy - rightly - that, for once, they were in the spotlight for something good they did, not for the bad thing they did that made them inmates, the bad thing they did that they looks at them in the face each time they wake up. I was especially touched with what the last man said. In the photo, he had his chest out and and a small smile, maybe he was thinking about his family seeing this in the news, his mother his daughter, seeing something good in him. Whatever his thoughts were, I'm happy to have come across a part of his story.

youd be amazed how much the respect means to people who are locked up. First of all its a place where respect is the #1 currency so to speak , the more respect you give the more you get. You dont disrespect another man in there. When i was locked the inmates who treated us like humans really stood out, ive always supported law enforcement and even wanted to be a LEO until i was arrested for making the wrong choices. Unfortunately i learned majority are what i call robo cops, they treat you like you just killed a baby or something. But then there was the ones who didnt act like we were anything less then them, those are the ones who wed stick our neck out to help if the situation arose. A guy i was locked with actually helped a cop (we have sheriffs guard our jails) when he was jumped on out of nowhere by some jcat inmate. Cause of that he got out months early, they actually tell us that if we help a guard in a way like that well get a time cut. The unfortunate thing though is that most the other inmates will not allow you to do that, in california we have some serious politics and you cant even go ask a guard for toilet paper without another person going with you. Luckily the guy who helped was bigger then me andim 6'4 220+ so no one was really gonna buck up and try to do anything to the guy cause they know theyd get rocked.

This is a county jail in the u.s., some counties are small or poor or both an can not afford to employ multiple guards an even still in places opposite of this there is generally one guard on duty with one or more that cycle through the pods at random times which is more cost effective than two guards in one pod doing little to nothing as is customary because jail inmates are locked down more than you think meaning they are locked in a concrete box with a steel door an absolutely no way out, even in an emergency such as this video, the only way out is if the guard lets them out as seen in the video.
Had Hobbs waited for the other guard to do their rounds he probably would have died, Hobbs was verbally unable to call over his radio for help so he had no choice in fighting for his life but to trust the inmates.
Generally showering, eating, an a few hours of out of cell time is all an inmate gets, about 8 hours for the good inmates, the bad inmates are locked down 23 hours with one "hour" for a shower which is really 20 minutes.
I hope this helps you understand why Hobbs was alone, sometimes you have no choice but to trust the people you are protecting society from.

The fact that the inmates helped him speaks to how good of an officer he is. If he was a corrupt cop who treated them bad there probably wouldn't have been such an outcry from all the inmates to help him. Maybe a couple would've but the fact that they all were banging on their doors at one point shows he was a good man to every one of them. Amazing people all around.

Heck, the US prison system put a lot of people in jail for small crimes or offends. Not like most prisoners are murderers or rapists. Some people who got sent to prison are too poor to pay fines or missed the court. Once they have been charged felony they will have a hard time getting quality jobs in the future and will forever be stuck with shitty underpaid jobs. Nobody really speaks out for those people. Been like that for decades and will probably be like that for another 100 years.
