The Death of Regional Hand Styles in Graffiti (Rant)

  • Today i wanted to talk about regional styles in graffiti, the most famous being philly hand styles. Regional styles used to be special hand styles specific to the region they were made, however, with the internet regional styles have become world wide with people all over the place learning them. While this isnt a problem at all, it does mean that new regional styles are unlikely to start up and begin.

Yo Mr. Grim. It might be interesting to make a video about graffiti from different alphabets (non-Latin alphabets) such as that Chinese piece.

In my hometown, there still is kind of a regional handstyle. It consists of disappearing after two months.

1 flow for SF and Cholo style from LA, AZ & Reno and Wicked from Philly. Its been like this since the 80s and I don't think regional styles will go away.

in brazil theres the infamous pixo, but that regional handstyle is not found in every brazilian state. pixo originated from sao paulo, but other states also have their own type of pixo. sao paulo's pixo is usually called pixo reto, as in straight pixo, which is characterized by very sharp and straight lines. however, in some states such as rio de janeiro you wont find any pixo, because those states have xarpi, a completely different kind of handstyle that is very wavy and sometimes unreadable

This was a cool topic! as regional styles get posted on the internet and brought to other regions they will add their own spin to it. As a result variants will be “originated” in those regions and the cycle continues. I think it would be cool to see a sort of original styles book on regional graffiti as a whole (like a graffiti encyclopedia)

I don’t think regional hands can be dead. You can’t truly learn how to write wickets or busflow or any of the others without actually being there and learning and eventually collaborating with all the dudes who do that day and night. That being said I do see graffiti going in the direction of people instead of doing what’s popping in their area which is how things have gone for the past few decades, people will branch out and do their own like back in the day when you’d have someone like Cornbread getting just as much respect and up on the same walls as a writer like JS who’s hand looked way more similar to something you’d see today.

I have to agree with the second half and disagree with the first half. For the first half, people can 1000% learn regional styles without being in that location, the issue is graffiti as an artform #1 has a notoriously low standard of info available and a low standard requirement asked of graffiti artists. If graffiti artists had the same understanding of graffiti than most other artists have of their respective art forms, then people could learn regional tags without any issue. A pro level artist from most other artforms could easily break down any regional style with no issue at all if they understood graffiti even a little. I say this to say, graffitis standard of knowledge is rising, and some graffiti artists are already at that standard. Once people get there all regional styles will be able to be learned at a glance and nothing more.

I don’t have a problem with people biting philly hands, but I see people biting ENEM’s hearts in his wickets and calling it their own. We put hearts and all kind of shapes in our wickets and it’s kinda corny to bite such a small part of what makes wickets unique. I feel like if people saw wickets being done they would understand why it looks the way it does… it has a purpose

word up, I totally disagree with this video cuz u can tell if someone learnt from a philly cat or if they jus straight up biting

BUT THERE IS… TikTok has a certain “style”, Instagram also. I’ve travelled around the world and I am sure that we’re in a Postmodern era, thus individuality is key. Internet has broken the bonds of distance. Great Video! Merci.

Nothing wrong with that, many people hate them. To be honest, when I hear their points I 100% understand why they're not a fan. I personally like them but many are done pretty poorly

A lot of people don’t like it because they don’t understand the tradition. It’s not just scribbles, it’s actual letter. You gotta be from around here to get it.
