  • In this video series, we look at the early years and the later years of one of Rock's most Iconic Vocalists: Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin!
    Robert Plant - Singers Then And Now
    The goal of this series is not to make fun of people, to show a picture of them in their youth and then mock them in their older age.
    The goal is to showcase how voices have sustained over time. And who has taken care of their voices and who hasn't, and what was the result. And what could've been done differently for those that did not take care of the voices.
    Could they have sustained their voices? And can they be rehabilitated now? Some singers (few) are just gifted with great genes and have been able to sustain their voices on their own. This is a rare exception. The rest of us mere mortals have to work at it, just like we have to work at our voices to get range, pitch, power, control, longevity, stamina, and so forth.
    In addition, it's just really cool to check out the incredible careers of these artists and marvel at their singing.
    So today, we are looking at none other than Mr. Robert Plant!

    Robert Plant in interviews looks back and laughs at those early scream days. He intimated that he was just winging it live. You listen to him talk and you realize what a cool person he is. He is an incredible vocalist, particulary from a feel and passion perspective. Such an awesome tone and timbre to his voice.

    Robert Plant is one of those one-of-a-kind vocalists. I agree that he still sounds as good today as he did when he was still in Led Zeppelin even though he can't wail those high notes anymore like he used to.

    Check out “How The West Was Won” if you want to hear Robert Plant sounding great live. It’s a recording from the LA Forum 1970 or 71. Plus… There are some BBC recordings of very early Zeppelin where Plant is sounding awesome, the way he does on the studio albums.

    Plants voice is so much a part of my first musical experiences as a kid that really blew my mind, so even at half pace and a more limited range, his voice still sends shivers down my spine. Damn, how many (more) times did I listen to Since I've been loving you after a break up? I've seen him live solo a couple of times. The first time i saw him the band came on stage and started playing, and after a minute or so the his incredible Whole lotta love-scream: Lllllooooove! came from backstage, and everyone's hair was on end. Fantastic. Thanks for the run through, very interesting.

    Plant actually had a powerful thick voice in 60's and somehow managed to change his sound in 70's. It blows my mind how he managed to change such a thick voice to a thin sharp voice which was of course his trademark voice.
    He lost his abilities in 73 - 75 but improved in 76 - 79. Now he actually sounds more mature and decent.
    Can you please do a video about Freddie Mercury's voice change from 74 - 91. You'll be amazed how his voice changed throughout the years. Of course Aids cost him his life but he actually got a higher range after losing weight. Both plant and Mercury are GOD'S of the music industry.
    Some of Zeppelins music are underated. (Down by the seaside) such a beautiful Masterpiece.

    Great video, Ken! In fairness to Percy :) Always difficult to compare studio recordings (where he can come back and redo any takes ad infinitum) to live renditions (smoke filled stadiums in the day, where he is also physically moving and engaging the crowd, singing these monster songs back to back for almost 2 hours), but here are some fun facts about Robert Plant - never took vocal lessons, never ever warms up or cools down ("I haven't got the time"), was a pretty heavy smoker until the late 90s (allegedly quit during after watching Thom Yorke from Radiohead sing during the Human RIghts Concerts, was so impressed by his voice he decided to now take care of his gift). I think his more recent work with Allison Krauss showed more of his mid to low range, which is really smoky and poignant. He can still belt out a wail from time to time but as you mention Ken he never trained properly (he should have invested in KTVA) so it comes out whispy and grainy. I do think his 2007 Zep reunion concert material vindicated many of the shoddy performances of the past (the shambolic Live Aid reunion). He is not a genetic freak like Glenn Hughes or Sammy Hagar who can still crush high notes in their late 60s/early 70s, but I personally like where Robert's voice sits now. To your point, its nowhere near the vocal juggernaut it was in the late 60s/mid 70s and he should have taken better care of it to access these wonderous notes today but I don't think that's his MO, he's all about adapting to the present moment and at least we have that historic time when giants ruled the earth :) Like Swinedog712 said earlier, hard to find a better live rock concert performance than How The West Was Won.

    I've seen Robert Plant live 13 times. Should have been 16 but I could only make 1 of his Southern States tour in 2016 due to my moms house flooding in March that year. I planned on road tripping it from New Orleans to Mobile, Al., Jackson, Ms., Baton Rouge, La., and Shreveport, La., before heading back to New Orleans. Alas, I could only get to Baton Rouge due to the time needed to help my mother with her flooded house. Wasn't mad just disappointed but happy to help me mom. Even the drive to Baton Rouge was tough. It POURED down rain the entire ride up. Didn't matter. I was gonna get there.
    My favorite artist. LOVE his solo catalog as well as all Led Zeppelin (of course). His shows are a good mix of new, for which ever album he had (has) out, Zeppelin, GREAT covers and even different versions of the same song the next night. (Saw him 3 night is a row in Austin Tx. in 2018). I've seen him sing in the heat of the day and on cool evenings. Have I seen (heard) him take off parts of songs? Absolutely. Ramble on, comes to mind. All I can say is his voice is much more refined as he's aged. He knows his limitations. It doesn't matter to me. I just love to hear the man sing. He could sing an instruction manual for operating a dishwasher and I'd listen intently, even more intently live. I love to hear him sing. Seeing him live is so much the better.

  • @psybernaught
    @psybernaught Před 2 lety +13

    As much as I love Robert Plant, it's simply true, and he's said so himself, that his live performances were very on off. And that I think is key to understand it. If you look high and low for it, you will find live performances which were stellar, epic. Especially his pre vocal surgery performances. There was one I found in particular where they had finished recording the fourth album (the one with symbols on the cover), but where it had not yet released, and they were still opening with the Immigrant Song, and mostly performed material from the third album. That opening wail, I swear, it was an octave above the album version, and very full and masculine sounding. Still a bit nasaly sounding, but at the same time muscular and diaphragmatic in its way. Overwhelming. Whether in the studio or live, when he was on, he was on all the way. But so often when singing live, if the wind just wasn't blowing right or whatever, he would lose his way to his head voice, and would try to compensate by forcing through to it, but unsuccessfully. I know I am going long winded here, and might be testing the reader's patience, but I have a theory why this was with Robert; I think he found a particular mental/vocal space when he was intoxicated, or in a certain head space where drugs sometimes helped him to find it. And when he was there he could do practically anything. But finding the thread back to that space wasn't always easy without whatever he was associating it with circumstantially, and often times it just wasn't there for him when he sung live. Personally, I had a similar thing with my voice when I was younger. Now that I am older, I might not actually have the same strength and endurance that I did back then, but, I found a way to reach my head voice, and other aspects of my voice, more consciously, and methodically. I am more consistent in my performance and abilities. Ken's videos actually have played a role in that, so thanks to him for that help, and I never seem to lose my way in that sense any more when singing, and I am much more self aware when reaching up for those high notes especially.

    One of the keys I like about how Ken teaches is learning how to belt, use distortion, power- SAFELY. What good is belting one night, and unable to sing the next? Or belting for a year or two, only to have to have vocal surgery and struggle after that? Being awesome SAFELY.... is the key for me in Ken's teaching.

    Even though the Allman Brothers are my favorite band and I'm a huge fan of The Beatles, nobody does it like Zeppelin! Even at their sloppiest, they have an energy that no one can touch. That being said, I've never thought Plant a great singer live, but he is very clever in how he handles what he can't pull off. Plus, he has a charisma that is unmatched. I really liked his early solo albums. I've become an even bigger fan of his more recent Americana stuff. I think it fits his voice very well, and I really like his versions of some of those ancient songs. Both albums he has recorded with Alison Krauss are outstanding, in my opinion. Like the old saying goes, "A man's got to know his limitations." Plant seems to and works well within them.

    Robert Plant has had many amazing live performances. Yes , In the Zeppelin days there may have been an off key note here and there. But let’s not forget, he had vocal surgery sometime in the mid 70’s and also, he was singing live in an era where stage monitors weren’t even a thing. The sound systems of that time period were in their infancy basically. Maybe at best they may have had some side fills but it’s not like he was able to hear himself properly.
    Imagine the strain it must have put on his voice trying to keep up night after night.

    Very appreciated as always… and glad you took stuff from the ‘95 and ‘98 tours as this is the most appropriate source material, given how extensively he was pursuing the Zep catalogue. It’s a shame you couldn’t use live Zep from the BBC sessions to contrast. I’ll add this: there was a period of about two years Plant was pushing his voice beyond what he should have been doing… and we essentially have three Zep albums recorded during that time, as well as other songs that were but put out on later material. It’s what he’ll always been known for… and his “technique” was reckless, arrogant abandon. Hard to believe he’s my favorite singer, right??

    Ken - Plant sounded very much like the recordings from 69-71, after that his voice became strained from the touring, but he could do it live - although the black and white Danish TV show he sung a bit under and ducked notes, there are other recordings from those early years where he does not. Also the first couple of albums were recorded with very few takes, and are almost effectively live recordings.

      Was going to say pretty much the same things but maybe through 72. By 73 he may have been holding back to save his voice for long tours or he knew he had become inconsistent because of damage (?). I really like his voice on Over the Hills and Far Away on HTWWW which was in 71 which matches the album version. It seemed to me there were 3 or 4 changes or versions of his voice during LZ, 69-72, 72-73, 75, 76-79.
      Some of the early solo live stuff still shows a good range.

In fact they were asked to appear at Woodstock but their manager, Peter Grant, said no he didn't want them to be tagged as a festival band as they had done some in California that year. Instead they played at a little place in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Convention Hall on the boardwalk across the street from the Stone Pony, that weekend. Sadly I was only 9 then and didn't get to see them. They played a number of shows in 1979, a year prior to John Bonham's passing.

      Ken uses videos he's allowed to use from publishing company so he's using the best videos he is allowed to have access to use for CZcams. Ken also said 3 1/2 or four years of "actual touring time" the tours you mentioned were very short-lived. 6-9 weeks long each (with a couple small exceptions).The only "real" tour was First tour was from 1968-1973 which they toured quite a. bit (under 5 years). I believe Ken was referring to the "actual total amount of touring time" compared to a band like Bon Jovi the toured nine months out of the year for over 2 1/2 decades or The Rolling Stones which has toured for 45 plus years.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  Před 2 lety +1

      They actually toured from late 68 to mid 75 I believe. And yes that time was relentless touring. But that amount of touring is nothing compared to the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, or even Bon Jovi back in the day. My point was that compared to the iconic status they received, the amount of touring was very minimal in comparison to other bands that have been around that long. The 1995 examples of "now" is unfortunate because I'm only allowed to use certain footage from different publishing companies. Led Zeppelin and AC/DC and a few others like the Eagles are extremely strict on what they allow for use for commentary on CZcams. So I use what I can and do the best with it

    • @greggakkerman
      @greggakkerman Před 2 lety

      I get what you mean that they might have toured less than some of the powerhouses of the day. And there's very little live video of them compared to other acts so I'm not surprised you had constraints. Just for the record, they performed over 40 dates in the US in 1977 before canceling the end of the tour when Robert Plant's young son died. It was their eleventh US tour in under 9 years.

    This is a tough one for me. Robert is one of the best Rock vocalists that’s ever been imo. And one of my favourites too. That stuff he done with Zeppelin is nothing short of Legendary. He is the bench mark for so many Rock vocalists. But I have no time for most of his solo stuff and the Alison Krause stuff, it’s just not my thing. I was so hopeful for a Zeppelin reunion tour when they done that reunion gig in the O2 London back in ‘08 (think it was). But he was the only person in The World who seemingly didn’t want it to happen, and so it didn’t. And he sounded great that night in London too, really awesome. IMO he’s been doing the solo thing long enough (early 80’s) give the world some Zeppelin. Though I know now unfortunately it won’t happen, it’s too late now.

Everyone should definitely do it as they get older. Why don't the whole band adjust a little to the singer, it will sound better and he will suffer less. Ken when first hearing then and now of Robert Plant my first though that his voice aged quite well, yes lost a litttle range and strength in the sound with training he could recover some of that lost ground but not too bad !

    Please check out Eric Martin of Mr Big..I think he's got the most unique voice comparatively different from all the legendary rock singers especially in regard to the 80's and 90's Era of rock music..However in my opinion he is purely underrated..
    Please check him out..meanwhile you're the best vocal coach I've ever come across on you tube..thank you Ken..we are indeed so blessed to have you..
    More power to you 🤘

    I have the greatest respect for Robert, not only for his vocal latitute but his writing also, I have to say tho, that I agree with everything you've pointed out. Ive never ever seen the big notes hit on stuff like stairway or since ive been loving you live, and actually wondered how he ever hit them in the original studio versions too..that said, even if id managed to record that stuff even once, id die a happy chappy.
