One of my favorite Ben quotes/voiceovers in his best Rom Burgundy voice “Offshore sailing is hours and hours of sheer boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror!” 😝

Hi I’m a filipino, also a fellow boat owner. The fishermens here are usually so far out from shore because either there are no fishes near the shore because of improper fishing (uneducated). Decades of dynamite fishes is what lead to this ordeal. The second reason is there are now fish sanctuaries near the shores or mostly on reefs hence why they have to go so far out in the sea. The big fishing vessels you saw that had several bangka’s on it are for offshore fishing. Same boats that chinese navy are harassing. What I can advice for a safer trip next time (thou mindanao is also safer now) is to pass on the northern side of the Philippines or even in the Visayas region is fine. I know there’s a yacht club in cebu. Subic is great lots of other boat owners there. Batangas -manila passage would be the best.

Thats odd..I live here and there are terrorist events weekly still.
95% of the issues are south of luzon..north in subic etc is fine..stay out of the south if you are a foreigner...not welcome unless you are carrying a camera and have a crew showcasing the philippines.
Say anything negative and they will make you persona non grata

No need to be aggressive, but ignoring those nervous feelings one has in a situation of many unknowns approaching your home in the middle of the night in a very remote and isolated place is what gets many people killed. "Nice" is very often a tactic that gets people to lower their guard. I'm all for being nice and relating to the locals, as long as at the same time I demonstrate very loudly that I can and will defend my home, my family and myself if provoked or attacked. I know it sucks to live in a world where this is necessary, but it is.

I worked on big boats in the oil field on the Gulf of Mexico. It does get rough during the winter out there. Oil production slows way down because companies and employees just don’t want to deal with it. I always told my family that days when it’s a little windy at the house like 10 knot sustained winds, in the gulf it’s blowing 30-40kts.

You both look really happy, just as we remember you when you were out sailing the world.
Hope the bambino’s and your extended families are keeping well.
Ben - do a similar one on fishing please. We bought a new Seawind 1260 which was completed in March this year. It’s still in storage in Vietnam as we can’t get in to collect it. I bought a load of fishing gear based on your experience and suggestions for rods, reels and tackle. This is our first boat. We decided to take the plunge, retire early, sell everything and do what you both do. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer :(

Not a traveler, but someone with alot of experience navigating difficult situations and hardships and my tip is
Don't expect anything to work out, things fail, things go wrong, and that's okay.
You live some you learn some just keep going.
If you're overwhelmed, just take a break.
      There is no rush.
Be patient with yourself and the world.

My biggest regret in life is not joining her on a 6mo trip my Junior year of high school. “Marching band”, “friends”, were my excuse... 😞
    Thanks for the stories!

I think you guys got it twisted. If you're not prepared to be a survivor, then you don't need to be adventuring.
In the woods, you'll run into bears and big cats. You bring a big enough gun and survival tools. Same idea for being out and alone somewhere at sea. If you meet pirates, be prepared to kill or be killed. If you can't kill, stay home under your rock.

@@thedevilsadvocate3710 I understand what you’re saying, and these people in the video do seem like they generally understand the risks of the situation and have prepared for them. But as a blanket statement, it’s laughable at best. Fears exist for a good reason and they 100% stop you from doing things that you’re not prepared to handle.

@@derblah9006 I understand. I think it's great they're living their dreams. It pains me to hear stories of people who do similar things and then the expected horrific things happen, it is a tragedy. Like young attractive Western single women biking across Pakistan/India solo. Or Americans solo hiking in Afghanistan/Iran. How do play with fire and not expect the burn?

Are you allowed to carry personal firearms while sailing all over? International waters, different countries etc.?

Yes until you get into a country's water that doesn't allow it. I think where you come from is what laws you follow so if you come from the us you follow us laws in international water until you get to a country's area.

I remember pulling into a bay on lombok or sumbawa I think it was in the 90's, and some heavily armed dudes boarded our vessel requesting we pay a fee or use their "bar" in the jungle, ended up going into the jungle for a drink with eyes in the back of our heads, was only later on we realised it was the harbor master that had pulled up on us, so sketchy at the time but ended up being pretty harmless.

I used to race and also joy sail a Nacra 6.0 with a spinnaker. It had three sails and when you go supper fast it vibrates, hums and makes a rooster tale. You have to be going really fast for that to happen. That would be called a white knuckle ride, a wet and wild ride and you can yell out at the top of your lungs, yippee skippy because it's totally rad.
