    Well done guys , great vid , I have did this summer and winter and I can assure you it is a lot more relaxing to do when the ridge is covered in snow , we climbed up from the CIC hut and after a good rest walked the ridge to the top of Ben Nevis . It was a beautiful clear day . The snow takes the strain out of picking yourself through the boulders , although its a fantastic feeling to do it in any conditions .

    This vid brought back old memories, living in Hampshire now and my ancient Sasernach mates, who are all seamen have been pestering me to take them up a few hills in my homeland. They all want to experience a trip up Nevis, I have been explaining to them about the Arete, this vid should wet their whistle. A couple might even be capable to do the Aonach Eagach, threading the eye on the Cobbler, that kind of stuff. Some of the blessed times of my long life have been in my mountains, although my pirate friends have given me a taste for the sea in my dotage.

    It's a track called 'Breath of the Mountain' from Spiritlands by John Huling.
    It's roots are native american but I thought the mood of emptiness and wilderness was appropriate on this side of the Atlantic. Available to buy from from Amazon or his own website.

    As a professional videographer I have to say this is just a fantastic video. I have climbed the Ben several times and the first time was the route you filmed. I live only 2 miles from the foot of the Ben so I count myself fortunate to climb it whenever I want. The route you filmed is the most interesting way to climb the Ben. Yes the tourist route is boring and descending is a pain in the knees, but the views are stunning. Good for you fantastic quality filming and very professional. Eddie

    Nice Video. My father took me up The Ben 1st Jan 1962 via the Tourist Route and being a man who never liked to return by the same route we came off the Ben via the CMD - complete white-out conditions. I just followed the Old Man down - perhaps best I didn't see where I was going ! Been back several times over the years but still have never approached the Ben from the CMD, must do one day.

    Great video. We did it yesterday in terrible visibility so nice to see what we missed. . The arete is not as scary as Sharp Edge, maybe on a par with Striding, and not as tough as Aonach Eagach . The final boulder field after it is tough though because the tanks are getting dry by then. We were 10 hours on the hill not hanging about that much. Descent by tourist route is sore on knees and in poor visibility a bit of a drag. Great day out though.

    Well-filmed & edited + good music choice. Light could have been a bit better (brighter) ...but to get the Ben without its 320 day-a-year hat on is rare. We waited 3 months for a decent day in '98.

    I wanted to do this yesterday but one look at how fast the clouds were blowing by the summit made me fall back on the tourist track instead. I think I made a good decision as the winds just got stronger and stronger past 1000m, and I could not even stand on top of the trig point with the strength of the winds. It's hard to get up to Fort William but it's my goal to give this route a shot whenever the conditions allow.

    Went up there with my sister once.middle of winter so we took our axes intending to do a winter traverse. Not a flake of snow! Peeing down the whole way. Water running off our noses. Not scary, because the mist was obscuring the exposed bit of ridge! So not much bragging rights!

  • @greatburbo
    @greatburbo Před 12 lety

    Not as narrow as the T.R. or perhaps Crib Goch the approaching ridge is wide and grassy in the mist route finding can be a bit tricky but as the ridge narrows and curls around to the Ben the route is obvious as it climbs up it widens out into a boulder field plenty to grip , its O.K.

      I climbed Ben Nevis for the first time in May 2014 using the tourist/pony track but didn't find it challenging enough so going back to do a winter climb on February 10th 2016 using the same route. Would like to try this scrambling route but not sure if its wise in the winter? I'm up for it but taking 2 others with me who aren't experienced climbers.

    • @scttfrgsn
      @scttfrgsn  Před 5 lety +2

      The Carn Mor Dearg (CMD) Arete route is not remotely suitable for a 8 year old and in April the 'normal' route up the Ben is highly likely to have serious snow cover so it's entirely up to your knowledge of your son's abilities but since you are asking the question I think the answer is no.
