      @@pedallingpete3937 yes I have some water has got into the display as it now mists up, but it’s still readable. I don’t doubt you’ve had the problems you state. However that’s not been my experience. My friend also bought one on my recommendation he’s done 7000+ miles and the only issue he’s had is a broken mudguard. I do think the chain wear is a common issue mine needs replacing and the cassette, I don’t think that’s a lot to pay after 3000+ miles though. I hope I don’t eat my words but I call this my magic bike because riding it is so easy and fun. Feel for you getting a bad one.

    I bought the same bike, here in Germany. I bought it in May 2019 and have done 5000Km. The bike fits me perfectly ergonomically and I love the way it looks. Unfortunately that is where the good news ends. I had the chain snap after 2000Kms. Classed as a consumable, paid for repair myself. I have had issues with the back light. I was riding in the dark when I was informed, by the Police, that my back light was not working. I was fined but eventually got it working. The back light is wired through the rear mudguard. There are two holes where the power goes in, at the bottom. There are two holes near the top, where the wires for the light fix into.. The wiring is held in place by cheap plastic grommets which are pushed in and hold the wires in place. I got fed up of stopping every 2 KM to twiddle the grommets so the back light would come on. Eventually I bypassed the mudguard and wired them directly.
    When the battery gets too low it is supposed to shut down the rider assist and just provide power, 2 hours, for the lights. Mine just shut down, leaving me stranded as I had no lights. ( I was riding at night).
    I rode once in the rain, never again. The lights remained on, couldn't move from eco, couldn't turn it off. I had to wait a week before everything worked again. My dealer is great, he just doesn't get any support from Giant.
    I am left with a bike that I can't ride at night and I can't ride it in the rain. I am limited to sunny days. Fortunately, we have had lots of those since May 2019. Next year I will replace the Giant Explore (as long as you explore in the day and in the dry) for a bike of much better quality. My wife has a Cube, it was cheaper than the Giant but has given her 5000Km's of trouble free riding.

      @pedallingpete3937  Před 3 lety

      Jonathan Greaves It is very poor. I took my bike back to the supplying dealer who worked tirelessly and rewired the light as you have. But eventually I got my money back as, like you say, they are useless in rain so unsuitable for daily life.

    • @jonathangreaves2129
      @jonathangreaves2129 Před 3 lety +1

      @@pedallingpete3937 It is indeed poor and a real shame, as I love the way the bike rides, I have ridden 80Kms without power (forgot to charge it), was surprisingly easy. I test rode loads of bikes and the Giant fitted me perfectly; I like the 20 gears (rare on an E-Bike). Today, I washed it and stood back and thought how lovely it looks. With a little thought and attention to detail, the Giant could have been a great bike. Unfortunately it isn't. If their customer service was anywhere near acceptable I would persevere but it seems once Giant have your cash they no longer care. Buyer beware.

    Thanks for the review. My wife originally had an Urban Mover (from Halfords) and we had similar problems - poor build quality/design and rubbish customer support. She now has an old Giant Twist - lovely bike, no problems, but I suppose success breeds contempt and poor quality control. As I'm now approaching 70 was considering a Giant electric bike - but not now. Will concentrate my search through local reputable and capable dealers. Thanks for the warning....

    Sounds like you were very unlucky to be sold a lemon! I have two Giant e-bikes, Road E+1 (2017) and Full E+3 (2018). Both have done thousands of kilometres without any problems and I'm very satisfied. For info, the cranks on both bike are FSA brand, which I believe are made by Giant. The chains are expensive E-bike chains made by KMC.

    WOW ! Fabulous feedback. Was listening today to a podcast where entertainer Timmy Mallett shared the fact that he was riding a Giant Explore E +1. So, I took a look at the product on the web and although I was far from impressed by what I saw, I decided I needed to visit a dealer. My recommendation is to Buy one from an LBS that have demonstrators and experience of fixing them. I still have the bike but I believe my local Giant Franchise is at fault with the pedal arm issue. Today, I have had to return it it the actual supplying dealer- 73 miles away. Giant only allow warranty claims as a matter of course from the original dealer, so are far from a global brand in their practises. So I would only look at local dealers, nothing on line. Somewhere easy to return to should it break.

    I am very sorry to see what happens to you. You must be disappointed as you made quite an investment in this good looking ebike. I bought myself last Month a Giant Explore Pro E+1 and have not been lucky either. I made only less than 100 km and whilst bringing my son to school, the whole rear derailleur collapsed and came off. A disaster. I brought it to my nearby Giant dealer and waiting for his feedback now. I was schocked as this bike is brand new. My wife and me bought each of us such a bike, costing us nearly 6500 euro.

    I live in Vancouver, BC. I recently bought Giant Fastroad E+ Ex Pro 2020 Variant which has 375 wH battery. I rode it for less than 250 Km. In the beginning the Bike would show sign of battery Pack error. I took it to the shop and they told me its a soft ware update. Well the problem started growing from there. I rode my bike and after every 500m to 1Km the bike would turn off automatically. I was shocked. I just returned the Bike to fix them. They just added few shims to have a good contact for the battery. But its a shame that they have to do this. I payed CAD 4000 for the bike. I ride it in the rain too. I recommend to be careful when Buying a Giant Bike.

    Thanks for doing this, really useful to know and certainly swayed my purchase decision. I'm no bike expert, but even I know about the different threading on the crank arms, so that's just unforgiveable from a brand that's supposedly luxurious. If this is the level of reliability I'd rather get something for a third of the price from Halford's and budget to replace it annually and pocket the second hand value.

      Normally you get what you pay for. If was looking I would possibly look at Ribble offerings or something with a rear hub motor. Whatever you decide check the warranty terms. I was shocked to find the Giant warranty did not include labour as standard, but as a discretionary thing.

    This is what I was looking for as a review. Thanks to your review I will not buy this e bike anymore as I was planning to do.

    I’m starting to wonder if an e-bike is worth the cost and potential problems for the extra power they can give?
    Your experience makes me think that to get a good reliable e-bike I would need to spend money that could buy me a good fuel efficient motor cycle (Honda 125) plus registration AND a decent reliable non-electric bike? 🤔

    • @pedallingpete3937
      @pedallingpete3937  Před 2 lety

      The wife has an e-bike, it weighs 24kg. I used an online calculator to show me that if she goes up a 10% hill it needs 100w of the 250w just to move itself. A 50cc moped has 2000w and a 125cc 11000w. The uk government need to address the limits as I still feel electric bikes are an important answer to the coming mobility vs emissions problem. When I get another e-bike it will be hub powered as that seems to be the most simple construction. Your idea seems logical with current restrictions vs expense vs reliability, and a shame really.

  • @mt-nv4jd

    You would think that a bike that presumably will be subject to getting rained on would have water tight components...I've been considering an Ebike. Maybe now not so much. These approach the cost of a decent trail motorcycle.

    What a complete mess. I do hope that your bike has been properly repaired by now. The build quality is shocking and it is shameful that any self-respecting bike store would put a right pedal arm on the left side of a bike. Unless this is par for the course for Giant quality, the company really should have offered to replace your bicycle.
