In Vietnam I was the M79 grenadier, we were only out for short search and destroy missions, for 3 to 4 days, I carried 8 to 10 hand grenades, 35 to 40 grenade rounds for my M79, a belt of rounds for the M60 machine guns, then 4 or5 magazines for our m16,s also flares, food rations, 2 to 4 cantines, poncho, 4 blocks of C4 to blow bunkers ,other minor items, weights about 60+ pounds,

Nah, for Baghdad patrols we had in our packs: A jacket; a single night-observation device per guy; a regular MRE; sometimes MOPP gear if there was a suspicion of need; a bit of extra ammo; and lots of batteries. Small squad radios and first aid kits were strapped to our vests. Humvees and tracks carried more of all the same. Squad leadership would have mission-specific commo and intel printouts if we were looking for anything in particular. Not much high-tech super James Bond type gear, at least back then.

I am a US Army Veteran. 10th Mountain Infantry Division 2nd Brigade. 1st off, they aren’t called tactical backpacks, they are called rucksacks. I was an 11C(mortar man) my ruck weighed around 110-140 pounds, depending on the mission. You’re not wrong about how those MRE’s taste but there’s a lot more that you didn’t mention.

Top flap - ponch with bungie's and pegs
Under flap - order books
Main compartment - sleeping bag in its bivie bag, roll mat, change of uniform and my grab bag.
L/ side pouch - wash shave kit, underwear, socks, foot power and boot polish.
R/ side pouch - some warm kit, gore tex, coms cord, cylumes, and small engineer tools.
Small front pouch - some rations
Grab bag - spare ammo, some more warm kit, a pair of socks survival kit and any other fighting or engineer depending of requirements.
