Hey Tony, I like your content, but, I must correct you / help you with the facts regarding your "suggestion" that the high cost is due to the Exempt Companies that are there. Bermuda is expensive because we have everything shipped/ flown in. Add in that we are a one stop destination for the boats and planes, and you get a higher cost there. One more thing, although there is no tax added to your purchase (s) at the register, the taxes from customs that is charged to the importer is added to the retailers purchasing price and so on. Keep up the work man. Peace

No offense, but your name is very much NOT "British"
I used to say when I lived there, too many foreigners were in the island, AND having babies. Too many. That does not make someone "Bermudian". Again, no offense intended.
My wife and I are both Bermudian born, with Bermudian parents and grandparents. Does that make our SON "Bermudian" who was born and raised in America? How?
Still, no offense intended. But I say the same thing about America. WHO is an American!? Everyone is an IMMIGRANT or a DESCENDANT OF AN IMMIGRANT! So, *who* and *what* is an "American?" I don't think it applies to any group or race of people.
I KNOW what an "Indian" is.
I KNOW what a "Chinese" is.
I KNOW what an "African" is.
I KNOW what a "Bermudian" is.

but what the heck is an "American"!!??

and Bermuda is becoming the same thing! We saw that before I even left. used to be talked about a lot. Last I visited, all I saw in 'town' were white Canadian faces
even at Admiralty House! Whole ton of white foriengers - Canadians. Sickened me, especially after the Canadian disrespect after Rebekka Middleton (which was her own stupid fault!). Now the silly Island flies Canandian flags everywhere. It's sickening!
Same thing with Indians in the island (except, they are not disrespectful people).
Even the police force is loaded with males from other islands
BOB selling its soul and heritage to HSBC. Where are the crests on the walls now? In the garbage!
I knew the Island was doomed in the late 90s and early 2000s. People who still LIVE there, and have never really left, you know it, but its sooo 'slow' you don't FEEL it. But people like me who leave, and are gone for many, many years, when we return, its a SUDDEN change cause its nothing like what we left. WE feel it more than you do. WE see it more. And we do NOT like what we see.

Bermuda is expensive because they're a small island and they import most of all foods and goods. The government bans franchises, as they want to give Bermudans a chance at business development ex. carpet installers ( can only be local Bermudans ) additionally real estate and property taxes are expensive along with groceries. Bermuda does not have rental cars as well , scooters, only cars for hire , buses, cabs and at some of the grocery stores there are "gypsy cabs" that may give you a ride to your villa for a small fee.

As others have said, basically we import everything. There's high customs duties added on everything imported so when you include those fees, plus the markup so that the stores can actually make a profit, you're often like close to the double the price of what you'd pay for in the states. Still don't understand why food in restaurants is crazy expensive but I guess what I mentioned before still applies.

@@TonyFlorida I own a BMW X5 in florida (2009 is when I built and purchased it). It was about $65 K. To ship to Bermuda is about a 100% markup (probably higher nowadays). So, to get this car to Bermuda, I would have spent roughly $130K.
Last I was there, I saw a base model BMW 3 series (I think it was a 3) for about $68K. That car is not even worth 40K! But the customs markup. That's what it is. Bermudians need to get back to farming and growing its own food. If a major war breaks out and IMPORTED FOOD cannot arrive, they are going to be done for! All it takes is a major war, or a REAL epidemic and folk in Bermuda will literally starve.
It USED TO BE we had all kinds of foods growing in our yards - red peppers, sugarcane, lemon grass, banana trees, cherry trees, sugar apples, peach trees, orange trees,
My wife family grows pineapples, lettuce and some other things, but they are senior citicens. This new generation coming up
will be devastated if war (or a REAL pandemic) were to break out and they can't feed themselves and cant go outside and pick food.

One in particular sticks in my mind because as a boy I was talking to some of the pilots and they told us the following day they were shipping out, heading off to the Gulf War. Where are the fish pies? Same thing. They used to be everywhere. I used to sneak off school premises (Warwick Secondary, now called "Spice" something) just to walk over to a spot across from PCC to get a Fish or mussel pie. It doesn't even exist anymore.
Even on my way home, there was a spot on top of Berkely Hill that sold local dishes. That doen'st exist anymore either.
I heard Art Mels is closed. I cna't really call FISH or COLESLAW or MAC N CHEESE a "local" dish, but they were certainly locally owned.
Oh sure, I've had "locally NAMED" dishes, but they don't taste like how LOCALS used to make them. I've even had my wife and I (when she came to visit) go around, back when I was there, and I'd inquire about certain foods on the menu and I was told that it was IMPORTED! Imported!? A darn Chocolate sufflee' is IMPORTED!? I"ts a darn DESERT!
      Start asking questions.
WHO is the chef and ARE they Bemudian born and desended?
WHERE does this food come from?
IS is bottled, or is it made from scratch (ie: the frut punch at black horse tavern)
Start asking the questions. Then you'll start to understand why LOCALS are so
agitated with what's going on in the island.
But sadly, too many Bermudians were sleeping. There are those of us who SAW what was coming, and rather than live in it, we left.
After Rebecca Middleton was killed, that foolish girls parents refused to admit that they FAILED as parents. That girl should have never gotten on a bike between two strangers to begin with! But those Canadians tried to run Bermuda into the ground with rumors and complaint. ANd the stupid Government catered to them, not the Island is saturated with Canadian flags and "snowbirds"! Better I left
then burn every Canadian flag I saw!
When HSBC took over Bank of "Bermuda', I protested. I knew the culture would be effected. Sure enough, it was. The Parish crests all came down because Bermuda Heritage is NOT valued by HSBC. I'd rather leave then be under such stupid leadership.
Those ASIANS will own the land. Such ridiculously high mortages. How can you ever retire or own it?! Divorce certainly is not an option (who is going to fight FOR a house they could never pay off alone!?). And when you "locals" can't pay off the mortages, who do you think will OWN the land? Asians. Y"all have not been paying attention to what is going on in the world, and what Japanese and Chinese peole are doing, even in Africa and other Islands. But I saw it. I complained. But like most of MY 'kind', we were told to, basically, "stop stressing". Now look at Bermuda. Deep in crap. Future is more at risk then ever.
And that 'pride parade' stuff? smh Would have never happened in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s. Never. But, its there now aint it? Premier is more about bringing $$$ to Bermuda than getting locals qualified and working. Guess I should have seen that coming since John Stubbs trying to fight for rights of his gay son back in 1991.
And the police. Good grief! What is the % of Bermudians to "other islanders" on the force!? Last I was there, I was pulled over by a car with 4 people in it. THREE of them were "trinidadians" (or something), and the SINGULAR local just happened to be the sister of my best friends ex. She happened to know me (probably because I also used to sign) and smoothed out the situation once she found out the name of my friend.
Not every 'locally owned' business is 'local.' Do you think the MUSLIM store is "local" just becaue its owned by Nation of Islamists or Muslims?
What about "Jamaican" grill? Think they are "local" when even their name has "foreign" all over it, and the owners are from another country?
A candy store that managed by a Bermudian, is that "local"? Was the CANDY made IN Bermuda? Does it even carry ANY locally made candy? Then how it is "local"?

 just saying.

Hi Tony, Great video. Come back again. Bermuda is Expensive. There are many factors. I read 1 view point where someone said the Government takes a huge wad from Customs. Well let me explain something to you. My home is valued at $1.7 million and my property taxes are only $2750.00 per year and I pay NO income taxes. In Bermuda, our streets are mostly paved well, our trash is collected. Our Gov't employs quite a bit of people. Point number 2., Everything is imported. There's cost in shipping. The people in shipping need to be able to survive in a country that is small, thriving and growing. C., Rents are high, because mortgages are high. Mortgages are high because property is extremely limited. Like in the US or anywhere else in the world, certain areas carry higher price tags for the same SqF of something in St. George or Somerset. (The outskirts) It's funny to me how some complained about the cost of living while stating they earned 5 times what they would have made back home. I can assure you that person made more than twice their Bermudian contemporary in the same position. But anyway, I digress. Made me SMH. On another note, regarding Fast Foods, the Public voted against having Fast Foods. The Government put it in our hands and the majority of us, me included, decided we did not want to cheapen our product "Bermuda" with FFFF. KFC was Grandfathered in because it's been here for as long as I can remember. And the reason food is expensive is based on everything I've said before, Importation, Salaries, Rent, Electricity & Profit. It's all a factor. We can't bring in mass amount of foods like a small city in the US or Europe which would drive prices down because it would spoil. So we cater to our audience. So Tony, line your pockets, save your money come back and just say "Hey!" Bermuda is Another world, most of us like it. I didn't always, but right now it's my little piece of Heaven.

The mall looked NOTHING like that. I'm a "town boy"
and I don't even recognize that place. Plus, it never had a food court, AND it wasn't that open or bright. Not sure when they renovated, but its certainly nothing like what I saw last.
I went to college in 1994. Went to Grad school in 2000. Last I lived in BDA was 2004-2009. I worked at BTC, so I'm certain I passed thorugh the mall in those years. I'm pretty certain it didn't have a food court back then either.

Yes. And the economy of Bermuda is stronger.
      $1.00 BD = $1 USD
      $1.04 SW Frnc = $1USD
Last I lived in Bermuda (2004-2009), real estate agents pretty much laughed at me when I asked if any homes were available for UNDER $700,000. I'm overly certain I can find MANY homes in Sw for way under that price.

I've never been to California, but there is talk when comparing Bermuda and Beverly Hill. However the visitor to Bermuda must remember that they are in a socialist economy with little capitalism.
Beverly Hills may or may not compare at the political level.

shorinryu00 Socialism CANNOT operate without a democracy. Unfortunately most of the Bermuda population are oblivious to the exact governing political system that operates here.
I wonder if they are aware communism will take over the island once Bermuda becomes an independent country.
As long as Britain controls the island, Bermuda is NOT a country.

Bermuda is a Trojan horse making it expensive in every conceivable way.
Here is another way to understand; Bermuda is "a captive Insurance market". Once an exempt foreign company establishes itself in Bermuda, the lower tax trade-off "pales" in comparison to everything else when operating a business here.
What most people outside Bermuda do not understand is that a social-democratic governing system is entrenched in Bermuda. There is a trace element for capitalism but that is eroding. On independence, the socialist element withers away and communism takes over. ( Communists are called Portuguese, in the island )
