  • Add some bells and whistles to your plate in the form of Add 3 things!
Try enriching your meals with healthy ‘extras’ to keep you just as full, increase nutrient diversity and help you reach your daily nutrient requirements
This might include some of the following.
    • Hummus or edamame beans
    • Guacamole or healthy dips.
    • A spoonful of walnuts, pumpkin or sunflower seeds sprinkled over salads.
    • A little grated parmesan or crumbled feta over a salad.
    • Extra home-made salad dressing e.g. tahini or French dressing.
    • Avocado can be added to meals as a dip or on its own for extra satiety and healthy fats
    • Sauerkraut, kimchi, pickled beets or olives on the side of your plate.
    • A healthy cold-pressed oil, such as pumpkin seed or walnut.
    • Sliced beetroot, sliced red onion or grated radish.
    • Throw some edamame beans or chickpeas over your salad.
Enriching your meals makes them more sustaining, tastier and more enjoyable as well as making them more nutrient dense.
Research from Kings College London recommends that eating 30 different plant foods a week creates an optimal and diverse microbiome. This means that it is not only how many vegetables you consume a day, but the different types you consume. This might be because the different fibres and phytonutrients they contain are equally as important in generating this diversity.
How to eat 4-5 different plants a day?
    • Soups are a great way of getting more vegetables into your diet, as are smoothies.
    • Pick up different vegetables at the supermarket or order an organic veggie box with unusual varieties
    • If you always just use red lentils or white beans, try green or black lentils, a selection of beans or chickpeas or maybe eat some red or black rice or quinoa for a change.
    • Have some glass jars in your pantry with different seeds and nuts and add them into your food.
    • Aim for a variety of colours
