DOES RELOADING 5.56 MAKE SENSE IN 2023?

  • Reloading can become a hobby in and of itself. Being able to tailor ammunition to your specific firearms and needs is a huge benefit. Old Soldier breaks down the cost effectiveness of reloading 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington during times of expensive and scarce ammunition. #reloading #556 #22adaynomore

When I tell people I reload, they always say.... Is it cheaper than buying new? The answer is sometimes, but really the answer is "irrelevant questions". Reloading is now a way to ensure you have ammo to practice with, or use, during unrest. EVERYONE chides me for collecting brass for both 5.56/.223 and 9mm. "Why bother its available and relatively cheap". Everyone seems to have a short memory. When the panic happens, like it has 3-4 times in my past, the ammo just disappears, and whatever is left is super expensive. This happens within 2 days of the trigger. I made my reloading decision right before the 2016 election, because we all knew what was next. (thankfully didn't happen!) I started reloading in 2019 and had amassed all the necessary components and tools. I have not purchased ANY 223/556 for the last 5 years. And I shoot "plenty" as the range in 11 minutes from my house. Don't buy a kit. Talk to a seasoned reloader, and they can tell you exactly what you need. And it doesn't need to be expensive. Lee Reloading makes great stuff, and they back it. I have two of their presses and no complaints. Make the investment.

Great info! Just what I was looking for.
Just FYI, Prepper Gun Shop has been selling the PMC 55gr 1,000 round case for $480 with free shipping. Not as good as your reload cost, but a great price for factory.

Right now that is a pretty good price.

I use ammoseek to find good ammo deals. Circa July 2024, 223/5.56 can be found between $0.35 - $0.40 a round, making the cost savings nonexistent unless you're reloading specifically for match grade accuracy. Reloading may make more sense for larger calibers or during price spikes due to ammo shortages. That being said, reloading supplies became scarce during the last ammo shortage so even that may be an invalid argument. You should reload because you enjoy it, not to save money.

It's more economical and it is a hobby in and of itself. My personal opinion is that careful reloading makes you a better shooter. Just my opinion.

Up here hand loading 556 is still cheaper by my calculation. Cheapest bulk ammo here is about $.75/round. With reload its $.43. That’s Cad$. It takes time but ive been doing it for a decade now and I really consider it as a leisure rather than a chore. Cheers

Reloading itself has turned itself into one of my hobbies. I know what you mean.
