Thanks for the help! I just finished disassembly , cleaning cosmoline, then reassembly and this video helped immensely! I shared your pain along the way. I am tired now and my hands are pretty beat up, hah.

Glad to see you got a Ross, especially one in such good shape, I'm still mid-restoration on mine but it's shaping up nice.

I’m really falling in love with this earlier pattern of Ross rifle..all I need is a new firing pin and I can do some testing with it against its period counterparts

@@ForestFirearms Mines a Mark 2*** that was heavily Bubba'd but as soon as I felt the action and saw how awesome the sights were I couldn't let it sit there for 140 bucks. I've got everything on it cleaned and conserved, pity I have to get a completely new furniture set for it though.

I’m kinda in the same boat..mine has been lightly sporterized with just the bottom last portion of the stock having been cut..I think that if I get the end cap I could easily do kinda a duffle cut repair and have it be complete

I’m Necromancing this video apparently. I recently received a 1905 Ross barreled receiver and bolt (literally that’s all that’s left of it) that has been passed down through family. It’s clearly been the object of many projects throughout the years. Which lead me here. While inspecting the parts I immediately noticed that the bolt head wasn’t fully caming to full lock, I’m not looking to Phineas Gage myself so I found the online manual (shoutout to forgotten weapons) and disassembled the bolt. This is where I am so grateful for this video. The spiraled grooves just kept lining up off axis, so I was able to confirm that the bolt had been assembled incorrectly, but until seeing this video and your guide, I had no idea how to resolve the problem. It also gave me a good excuse to give all the parts a thorough cleaning and a light stroke of oil. Now that the bolt actually fully engages and the bolt head cams over completely, oh my god this is such a smooth action. Going to try and covert her to magazine fed and build a pseudo chassis in carbon fibre.

My 1905 hunting rifle version had a super smooth bolt, you can open it with your pinky finger so easy.some people were afraid of it fearing the bolt would open on firing but it doesnt work that way

Trick...put the safety on and you cant open the bolt

I never thought we'd see a Ross rifle on the channel. Nice!

    Hi, This was excellent!
My commendation to you for going through this entire exercise for us and making it clear and understandable! I’ve just purchase my first 1905 and it has not been cleaned in ?
From seeing your struggles I think I will make a disassembly tool from the appropriate sized piece of pipe. The pipe would slide over the firing pin with some “play” and have a notch cut in the end to work the locking nut. A little tape on the end or a welded and smoothed washed, so I could put secure pressure. Then maybe a larger piece of pipe with a base for the vice to hold the bolt without the stress. Very helpful, Thank you

Thanks for this video. Got a Mark2*** last year and have only had it out a few times but love it. I had been dreading the day I have to disassemble the bolt for a more thorough cleaning as it appears so complicated but this is a huge help. Will it be fun? No. But I hopefully wont lose a finger or an eye now. ;)

This is the best video on the Ross rifle's bolt I have come across . And it was greatly needed . Great job !!!! I do have a question and hope you or someone can answer . I see that how much the firing pin sticks out the rear of the bolt is not the same from rifle to rifle . Some stick out some others not at all .. Why is this ????

Great video, thank you pal. I'm sure that if you weren't trying to film it, and had a vice to use it would have been much easier.

there is a guy in Canada who manufactures stock sets and some parts. I am working on a Ross mk II now. Numrich might have a firing pin. I will let you know how mine goes.

  • @robbrunk1214

Neither versions - the Mk II or the Mk III were soldier proofed. During WW1 the English supplied crappy ammo. That's what hosed them.

BIG Help! Thank you. I just inherited one with firing pin problems, but I haven't taken it apart to diagnose the issue. Looks like something for which I better set a few hours aside. Makes me appreciate the Mauser system... (Very curious if you were able to fix your firing pin and how you did it if you did.)

Yes, I ended up welding the tip from a Lee Enfield firing pin onto the old one and it worked great! I have some videos of it firing after the repair

I know absolutley nothing about the Ross rifle. I don't know the right one so it might be for them all. But is what I was told when they had the chance to get a different rifle they would get rid of it and go with the one they found. I heard you say that you have to get that piece in the right way. And you are right. The reason for that if you put it in backwards and shoot it, it would blow back and hit you in the face. They said there is only one on record that killed a man doing that.

Would you be able to take some measurements of the firing pin retaining washer?

Your video was very helpful. Mine is experiencing light primer strikes. Disassembled the bolt, it was so dirty it looks like it hadn't been cleaned in a hundred years. I've got it back together as per your video, but it's not quite there. I think the cocking piece is screwed too far in, the front of the bolt is not extending far enough and I failed to take a before picture. How far should the bolt stick out from the bolt body fully extended? Thanks again for posting this.

    • @ForestFirearms
      @ForestFirearms  Před 3 lety +1

I’d walk it out until it looks like it will set off a primer and not puncture it (if that is what you are asking)👍

what does the screwy part at rear of the helix path do though, ross bolt seems really close to mannlicher bolt but mannlicher bolt don't have that rear section

ah I got it, it is there so the bolt will not collapse on itself when you put it back to the rifle

Worse gun ever made by the canadians.if i was a canadian soldier i would throw a way the ross and picked the no.1 mk111 lee endfield rifle.

The Mk3 Ross was a different beast than the Mk2 and I really feel like they went in the wrong direction going with that model..I feel like if they would have changed the magazine on the Mk2 to accept chargers it would have been a better weapon than the Mk3 Ross for sure
