  • In this video i forge a cross peen hammer for the first time.
    The hammer is inspired by the "typical" Swedish style of cross peen hammers. I must say that i really enjoyed the process, and i really like the hammer. I hope this video gets you inspired to try forging your own hammer!
    thanks for watching!

    P.S. if you decide to follow Daniel Moss general guide lines for your rounding hammer...I don't feel you'll be disappointed.
    I took his class when he came to American last September. I'd never forged anything b4. He is an amazing teacher and a kuul dude. Pleased as punch w the product he so graciously guided me thru making.

    Looks beautiful! The corners look just a little bit sharp for a forging hammer for me... I hate that little dents you get with sharp corners.
    I like to have nice radius there. It gives just a nicer finish. But that's just my opinion and if it works for you it's perfectly fine! You're the one who use it in the end

      Do you know Alec Steele? He have an interesting forging hammer. I made a smaller version of his hammer since I'm a beginner and don't have the strength in my arm yet. I like his design, it works great for me

    I think I know what you mean, with preferring your self-made hammer. You value it more, you created it and there is something like a bit of a soul in it. I have the same feeling about my self made kitchen cleaver. Although it doesn't cut the best (still need more sharpening skills) but is something I created and it gives a good feeling using it instead of the bought tool, produced somewhere in a factory.

    I prefer a short handle on my hammer's but I like them even shorter than what you made. To counter the balance issue this creates I make a ball cap that I attach to the end of the handle. I feel that I can control the hammer better with a much shorter handle then is normal or even recommended. Not sure if there's any other smiths out there that feel the same way or if it's just me.
    But I do like the look of the head much better then what is found here in Germany or even back in the States.

    •  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you!

    • @seangere9698
      @seangere9698 Před 4 lety

      @ most welcome. I just wish I still had all my equipment. Haven't done any forging in almost 10 years. I don't have a place where I live that I can do any forging. But at least I can still watch someone that makes some amazing things like you do. Keep up the great work.

    • @vadimblin
      @vadimblin Před 4 lety +2

      Well, it's not just your feeling... it's physics. Shorter handle gives more control, longer handle gives more power into the strike. Finding the perfect balance between power and and control is the real trick here.
      Many people use a longer handle than they need to, so they can hold it further down if the need some extra force.

    • @seangere9698
      @seangere9698 Před 4 lety

      @@vadimblin I know it's physics. Also it's the reason I use a metal ball cap on the end of the handle, not only does it help balance it also acts like a stopper sort of like that on the end of a bat and allows me to grip at the very end of the handle for that extra power when needed. And you are so right about finding that sweet spot between power and control. It does change for each person which is why self made tools are always better then payed for ones. You can make them to your specific needs and likes. At least in my opinion. With that said one of my favorite hammers was one a friend made me when I first started and it does have quite a long handle but I tend to choke up on the handle most of the time, or maybe I should say I did as it's been quite some time sense I've used it.

    Excellent work! I’ve never been able to get used to swinging a Swedish hammer, though. For some reason I really feel most comfortable with a French hammer. I know, it’s weird 😂. I’m going to build myself a tire hammer one of these days. I can imagine it makes the work so much faster.
