Why Western brands are still found in Russian supermarkets despite sanctions?

- When Western companies say they’re leaving Russia, this can mean many things. In this video, I’m going show you typical Russian supermarkets exactly one year after the much-vaunted Western corporate exodus. We're also going to pick up some of the basic products that we usually buy to show you the current food prices in Russia after more than a year of harsh economic sanctions

All I understood from this video is that if Western companies leave the Russian market, then the Russians will become even healthier.
Shame that Russian government did not ban import of some staff from EU. Red label is not essential.
slightly healthier. there's still junk food you can buy in grocery stores though.
Absolutely
The trick is that 99% of these "EU" products are not really *imported* from anywhere, they've been completely produced in place for a while (you'd just need to pay attention to product information print on the package). So all this "Western Brand Great Escape" is essentially nothing but label change (the products themselves stay absolutely identical).
Ursula and others should be rewarded with the highest Russian government awards for their incredible help to local producers 😬

i live in russia and tbh im hearing about food shortage for the first time from your video. we have this tendency that when something bad happens elder people buy a lot of food (pasta, buckwheat, rice, flour, sugar) because they believe in price rising and food shortage. ofc if in your area lives a lot of elders you may see empty shelves of rice and buckwheat one evening. but you will come next day and you will see full storage again.
its hard to understand for americans who live mostly in suburbs and used to shop in big packages, but in russia especially in cities we only buy food that we will need for 2-3 days (sometimes people go to supermarkets everyday) to eat the freshest possible food. we prefer fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, fish and dairy. so we dont have a lot of food in our shops, you will see a huge variety of foods, but not stocks of it, because every few days (or every day) new fresh food comes to shops. so if few elders buy ten packages of cheapest buckwheat each, there will be no cheap buckwheat on a shelf.

So Finns were only ones delivering. Not very surprising. : ))
One thing that I see in this video though:
Rosstat did selective income study in 2021. The average accrued (gross) salary in Russia amounted to 56,280 rubles, which converts to 585.52 euros in todays conversion rate. And this is selective data, meaning the real gross salary is lower, especially regionally.
Around 21 euros of that shopping can be thought as essentials, so only buying those essentials (lets say that amount needs to be bought every 3 days), so per month around 200 euros. So that amount of shopping would burn average citizen around 40% for bare minimum, to stay alive.
And if thinking those groceries as lifestyle, the average citizen would have less than 200 euros for anything else, including housing and electricity. So I am not very convinced the Russian economy is really blooming here. Just surviving barely.
Your groceries are a little bit cheaper than the cheapest option here in Finland.
The main mistake you made when buying in Lenta was that you bought without a Lenta card. Without it, everything is 2 times more expensive.
In general, this is one of the most expensive markets in Russia. Your set of products can be bought at half the price.

I read the comments after watching the video and the only thing I understand is that people from all over the world have the same problems. And from all this, the capitalists get big profits, and in parallel with this, politicians talk about how "in that part of the world" (it doesn't matter, west or east) everything tends to collapse and is about to fall apart.
No the vegetables/fruits are not 20% more expensive than they were a year ago. What you are seeing is seasonal variation, they were always 20% more expensive in the winter than in the summer. Tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, apples, dont grow in the winter. Meanwhile things like lemons, which are imported from non EU or "unfriendly" states have seen an increase of about 5-10%. What you see mostly is that food has kept up with the inflation off the currency. Meanwhile what has become more expensive are cleaning products, appliances and electronic goods. Meanwhile fuel has gone up about 11%, again in line with the inflation of the currency.

I live in Azerbaijan and a lot of our food is imported from Russia. I can safely say that all rebranded products are made by the same companies. They taste the same, looks the same.

In Canada food prices went up by approx. 15-20%, and we are not under sanctions...
I live in Russia, in a regional city called Ufa, it's not even close to St. Petersburg or Moscow.
The average salary in our region is $ 600-700, utilities cost $ 57 in summer and $ 158 in winter - despite the fact that every Russian apartment has heating. (Prices for utilities are indicated for a 3-room apartment). We spend about $172 a month on groceries - this is for a family of 2 people (husband and wife), while we do not save and buy everything we want. Gasoline costs about $60 a month. For recreation and entertainment - $ 142 per month. It turns out to spend about $ 550 a month, with a salary for two of $ 1100-1200. (Prices are indicated at the usual dollar exchange rate - 1 dollar = 70 rubles).
At the same time, our people constantly complain that life is better abroad.Russia has the best service and beauty services, Russia has the best dairy products and a lot of farm products. We live better than in many countries.
The exchange rate is now around $1 = 91 rubles, and not 70 rubles. The quality of farm products I have seen being sold in Russian supermarkets (vegetables and fruit with wrinkled skin and rotting spots), would not be allowed for human consumption in Denmark. As soon as it gets even the slightest wrinkle or spot, the whole batch end up as animal food or the real low quality stuff they sell in Russian supermarkets simply end up as garbage for destruction.
@@agffans5725 70 rubles = 1 dollar is the average rate. Periodically, the dollar rises in price, then falls down.
Do you live in Russia to confirm the quality of our products? Or are your conclusions based on media propaganda?
@@meowmeow406 ... Not any longer, in January the price of $1 = 60 rubles, since then it has been in a free fall dropping dramatically and is now down to almost $1 = 92 rubles and it's estimated to keep dropping even further in the month to come.
@@meowmeow406 .. The horrifying low quality of fruit and vegetables in Russian Supermarkets I have seen with my own eyes, there are literally 100's of vids of Russians visiting their local supermarkets to show that there is no shortage of food and you can get everything you need, even though prices have gone up (which they will keep doing when the ruble keep dropping in value and because of inflation in general). but these vids also unintentionally reveal the terrible state of fruit and vegetables that is being sold.
As for meat, milk and diary products I have no clue of the quality, simply because Denmark produce 3 times as much food as we consume, so Denmark is a big exporter of food, while there are only a few foreign options, typically from France, and low quality sausages from Poland, I personally stay clear of, but I have never encountered a food item from Russia in all my life, or from Ukraine for that matter (except for sunflower oil and honey from Ukraine)
@@agffans5725 If you have not lived in Russia yourself and have not personally bought our vegetables and fruits, then you cannot say with absolute probability that our products are rotten or tasteless. I've been living here since I was born, we don't eat rotten foods or spoiled vegetables, believe me. We have the same huge selection of various fresh food in supermarkets. Also, many Russians have country houses, in Russian it is called "dacha", where we grow vegetables and berries ourselves, especially the older generation. It's kind of their hobby. I do not consider my country worse than others, and I am sorry that the Western media are turning the whole of Europe and the West against us. Many Russians do not approve of military actions in Ukraine, but there is nothing we can do about it. Just know that we are the same as you people, we do not starve and die under the yoke of sanctions.
Your forgot to say that even the market where you was shopping is a French market called auchan in France or ашан in Russia and Ukraine

To Real Reporter .I'm not from Russia mate .I live in UK for last 10years ,My job is connected with food supply and vegetable prices going up is nothing to do with sanctions. In UK most of big stores like Tesco or Sainsburys have most of vegetable shelfs empty, Weather in 2022 was so random in a world that now its hard to deliver vegetables .Spain supplier send us email that they cant deliver a lot of fruits and vegetables and the thing is weather changing all time and when they send for example Cauliflower good nice looking-Stock we receiving after going all the way to Uk is nothing more than a garbage. Right now in company i work we have a red list of vegetables we cant order. and that's why price go up. Not talking about all countries but that how it is in UK mate.
@Ivan Petrov The fact is, since UK left EU, they come 'last' when it comes to food exports/improts on the european continent. Spain and Morocco are the largest exporters, and EU is the bigger market and with less burocratic problems. So in the end, UK will get what 'is left' so to speak, in times of shortage.
Within a mile from my apartment in Moscow, there is a Burger King, KFC, Papa John's, Domino's, and Eurospar.
yes, the shelves can be empty sometimes, but only when they are being washed or the goods have not yet been laid out and the cart with it is standing next to it.😂
Another great video. Going to add, here in Canada my Costco trips year year and half ago used to cost me 275$-320$ now same trip 450$-520$, as far as I know there are no sanctions on Canada so seems like Russian inflation on food is inline with ours.
tell us what you buy. Meat in russia is up to 100 dollars per kg. See russian store flyers. In Canada I live well off 300 dollars a month for food. Even less. And I eat meat, tons of meat

As a Russian living in West I can confirm that Western media is a lot more truthful than Russian. I am embarrassed by Russian media and the Russian stories on national TV about military pigeons and mosquito about legalised cannibalism in Europe and child abuse.
In Greece and the rest of Europe, inflation is higher than in Russia. Make Russian products to replace western stuff, you don't need the companies- they need you. it is a good chance for Russian businesses to grow.
The funny thing is that the prices of cucumbers and tomatoes in our country have soared due to the fact that they are exported to Europe. There was a huge article in the Polish press, it was called like: cucumber is an occupier, or something like that.
The Russian Empire isn’t going to win or lose based on whether it has McDonald’s. I’d continue doing business with it
In fact, it annoys me and many of my acquaintances that many Western food companies continue to cling to our market. Gone and goodbye. We produce and grow almost everything, and we import exotic fruits and vegetables from friendly countries. Tired of this hypocrisy with rewriting labels.
Well both sides to be honest write crap about each other, in Russia how west is starving and freezing, and in Russia how everything falling apart because of sanctions, it's good to be in neutral view and see how both sides are trying to trash each other...
And Western brands are really toxic too. Take Coke for example. It is made from very toxic high fructose syrup which is bad for liver and causes diabetes. Look at MacDonalds, their burgers are called cancer-burgers because there's so much cancer causing material in them. And the same is true of many other western brands, such as Nestle etc. If you get rid of them, you will see improvement in health of your citizens and less pollution in the environment.
@@Krahamus I agree, but this is all an information war
Dude, you are missing the point by a mile. Ever occurred to you that if Russians stopped buying Western products, those companies would've been gone a long time ago? If you are leading an ideological war against the West, despising everything about it then why are you buying Western products? You either hate something or you don't - what kind of a split personality issue is this? Who is the hypocrite here?

Oh my God! I am Russian and I never buy Finnish butter or French yogurt, because we have water meadows and the best, and most importantly, fresh milk, and we have a lot of local products! It's fresher, tastier, more natural and, most importantly, cheaper! And the vast majority of the Russian population consumes local products! What are you talking about?....In every region of Russia there is just a huge amount of local dairy products! Chicken, eggs and meat! Apparently, Dannon and Valio are eaten by the inhabitants of megacities...and then, I think that those who understand them also eat our products! They are tastier and fresher! It's a perversion to buy Finnish butter and milk when you have fresh local, and even more farm, under your nose.... Sorry, but Coca-Cola is only suitable for washing toilets, and not for consumption inside, like any soda... I don't understand the talk about Coca-Cola in Russia at all.....

I’m not surprised there isn’t a food shortage in Russia, it is one of the world superpowers after all, the western import market is only a portion of the overall economy of Russia , the country has such great trade links with the rest of the world, especially east, it’d be hard to send a country like Russia into famine
The west either tragically misjudged the effects of sanctions on Russia or purposefully sanctioned it's own citizens.
What do they expected, Russia is not DPR Korea or Cuba, that are isolated, have few resources and means of production, and it's not Venezuela either that's run by incompetents.
Russia got plenty of resources and means of production to be self sufficient AND also provide for other countries as well.
Plus it's not isolated at all, it's even managing to polarize many countries against the west.
I don't know how European leaders thinks turning autarchic without being self sufficient would work out well for us.
