Cinco de mayo, is the Mexican revolution against the French emperor Maximilian when he tried to set up a french colony in Mexico. At the time, Mexico went from northern California to Western Oklahoma, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico.
La Batalla de Puebla is what 5 de mayo is about. It is not celebrated in México. It is embraced by Chicanos because it represents the underdogs, which is what we are here in the US. The battle of Puebla was fought in Puebla, which is located right outside México D.F. AKA Mexico City. It was when Mexicanos defeated the French. The French knew if they took down the capital (Mexico City), they could take over the entire country. They had already taken over Puebla and were ready to take down the capital but Porfirio Díaz helped defeat the French in that battle and saved México. It was super rainy and he released a bunch of pigs from a pen to cause a stampede as a distraction. It threw the French in their fancy, over-the-top uniforms off their game and allowed them to defeat and prevent the French from taking over the capital. Porfirio Díaz later became a President of México. Not a great one but if it wasn't for him, roads and other infrastructure would not have been created. Hope that helps! In sum: 5 de mayo is NOT a Mexican holiday, contrary to popular belief. It is just a marketing tool to sell beer and food here in the US to the gringos.
