    Some background: Platt and Matix were both military police with the 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell, KY. Platt had also been a machine gunner and platoon leader. Matix had been in the Marines prior to joining the Army. The shootout at the end where there were 145 shots fired only took a very long 5 minutes.

    Some important details were left out in this documentary, Grogan and Dove were the only two SWAT trained FBI agents in the gunfight. It’s important to note Ben Grogan lost his glasses during the cars being rammed together and was pretty much blind trying to shoot during the fight and Jerry Dove’s S&W 459 9mm slide was struck from a bullet from the Mini-14 and damaged to the point he couldn’t get it to function when he was executed ! Mireles was one of the only agents that had a long gun out that day. Others had long guns and machine guns in their trunks but couldn’t get to them after the fight started !

    In the Line of Duty: The F.B.I. Murders (1988) did a pretty good job of telling this story. Michael Gross played Matix and David Soul played Platt. Bit of trivia: Soul's then wife, actress Julia Nickson, went into labor with the couple's daughter, China, when they were filming the shoot out scene. Soul went directly to the hospital still wearing his "bloody" clothes to be with his wife during the birth. I'm guessing his appearance surprised a lot of the hospital staff.

      That tape lasted me into the late 2000s.
      Ed Mireles wrote a book about it.
      Hollywood, I'm sure at Ruger's hand, glorified the regular Mini-14 ranch rifle Platt used with the Ruger AC556 13 inch barrel select fire (semi/tri burst/full auto)
      That wood body and folding metal stock was used on regular Mini-14s on the original The A-Team.

      The militarization of our law enforcement probably involved a lot more than these two incidents, such as the usage of SWAT teams shifting primarily to drug raids rather than their original purposes of hostage situations and barricaded suspects, but they did highlight the lack of marksmanship, which is something that persists today, and the necessity of 'patrol rifles', which were already around but I think more on an individual officer's choice rather than department policies.

What I find most insane about this --- which I never knew --- is the FBI waiting on a busy bureaucratic agency, DMV, and on the U.S. mail to hand-deliver the Ford pick-up truck owner's identity through the mail system when agents could have gone directly to DMV and gotten it in one day, considering the seriousness of the case of bank robberies and murderers.

In these close proximity fights shotguns are priceless. The worst thing is the fact that they actually expected to find them and engage them. It wasn't some lucky break where off duty FBI agents just stumbled upon these criminals by chance. A few M16s would end this shoot out very fast.. We studied this incident when i was in the State Police academy. These Agents were clearly outgunned and weren’t trained in how to conduct a felony stop. Many law enforcement agencies changed their training procedures after this incident and the type of firearms they carry.

    • @jamesdick2580
      @jamesdick2580 Před 2 lety

      more like they were clearly not trained in how to deal with extensive special operations training. i'm sure they knew how to conduct a felony stop. they even say in the video that they had no training on how to deal with military training. FBI agents were trained in defensive tactics while the bank robbers were laying down precision suppressing fire which kept agents pinned down while the other robber got some killing shots out there.
