MAIBI LAICHING JAGOI

During the festival of Lai-Haraoba which is an annual ritual festival of the Meiteis, the inhabitants of the valley of Manipur, the Maibis, the priestesses considered to be spritural mediums, trace through their dances the whole concept of cosmogony of the Meitei people and describe their way of life. Beginning with the process of creation, they show the construction of houses and various occupations of the people to sustain themselves. It is a kind of re-living of the way of life of the past. The Lai Haraoba rituals cannot begin without the maibi dance called "Laiching Jagoi". The act of the creation of the earth is represented in this dance by the maibi. Only after this dance can other rituals of Lai Haraoba follow. The inherent meaning is that only after the earth is created (depicted in the maibi’s dance) can various living beings inhabit it and perform the activities necessary for living (depicted by other rituals of Lai Haraoba). This is the reason why the maibi performs the laiching jagoi in the beginning of the Lai Haraoba rituals.

Maibi Jagoi" (Meitei: ꯃꯥꯢꯕꯤ ꯖꯒꯣꯢ) (literally, "Priestess' dance") is a traditional dance form performed by the maibis (priestesses) during the religious festival of Lai Haraoba of SANAMAHISM religion, the ancestral traditional religion of Meitei in Manipur.
This is the most beautiful and mystical dance in the world- MAIBI JAGOI/ PRIESTESS DANCE.
This dance beautifully depicts the creation of Universe and how life is created.
