The Cornish BlackAdder

  • A proper rare treat to see this wild snake on the dunes of Holywell Bay, Cornwall, UK.
    After studying many pictures online, we can only presume this to be a 'Black' Adder of the British Isles. For many years I have frequented these dunes and never have I seen this. I carried that awe for many days after, scanning the grass for that diamond back. No joy :(

    I was scrambling down to a beach in Sussex and sat down on a large hump to rest. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something move. As I turned my head a very large adder (female?) moved off the hump into the undergrowth. I’d sat down right next to the blighter! 😳

    Somehow I just don't think of England as having venomous snakes in sand dunes. The secret life of England!

    Not a black (melanistic) adder, they are all black or near-black, but a classic black on pale grey male adder - females are normally browner.
    Nice footage though.
