Stephen Fry is another example of this duality. He talks about his Catholic upbringing when he’s attacking Christianity and plays up his Jewish heritage when he wants people to feel sorry for him. Absolute weasel

      He's awful.
He was literally against Thatcher for the sole reason that he didn't want lower class people having any power or opportunity.
Something along the lines of "you can't let some barrow boys run the country".
      He is a massive snob.

Fry was one of the only people who disliked Thatcher because he only thought the Upper Class should rule Britain.
He was quite open about it too.

Loyalty to political groups, general theories, political ideologies or even nation states are secondary only to loyalty to one’s own people, religion, family and bloodline. En français : « un secret de polichinelle » or a secret that everybody knows. 250 years of propositional nation states have not been able to eradicate that fundamental human identity. What we are witnessing here with the Davids is their instinctual rediscovery of an old truth masked by western liberalism. It isn’t « luxury belief », it’s survival hierarchy.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but being fluent in Woke-ese, I believe there is a way that Schwimmer's apparently contrary identities can actually both exist at once.
"White privilege" is about appearing to be white to others. It does not actually require being white, or 'feeling' white.
His later assertion that he did not feel white, is about the inner self.
This is also how a transwoman can be a woman but also have male privilege.
Not my opinion; just my analysis of the mind of mid wits.

In other words, when hwhyt-ness was displayed as a low status way to identify, this understandably leads to most ambitious and socially-aware people being quite happy to distance themselves from it. Despite the fact that what they're turning against is an immutable characteristic. "Well, yeah, but I'm not like THAT." So far, there has been an acceptance of a dual meaning or second element, one that you can reject, and are encouraged to do so.

    @ThePalaeontologist Před 8 měsíci +7

The power of being the minority is that there is favouritism in the West as it now stands, on weakening limbs, for the outgroup preference. Overrepresentation, favouritisation, social status boons and social mobility advantages, are conveyed onto the minority. The power of being the native majority _used_ to mean that you could be properly represented in the fair and logical manner, and be given a level of respect which befit the nature of you belonging to that land. Now, in England at least, it is completely topsy-turvy.
The government _bitterly resents_ the very existence of the old majority natives, and ingroup preference is shunned in favour of the endless congratulatory atmosphere generated around the outgroups from various, relatively recent generations. The normalisation of English folk becoming suddenly equivocal over so-called 'tolerance' and 'inclusion', has made many of our own people our own worst enemies. We are completely riven as it stands, in a way in which we never truly were in the past.
Even during the times of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy pre-Unification of England, the comparatively smaller, pettier kingdoms (or which there were primarily seven, though technically more), there'd be many recurring themes. In spite of the lands which became England, back then, still having yet to coalesce under one banner, the peoples living in them were pretty much variations on a theme. There were important cultural differences, though they were largely of very much related stock. They fought each other, yes, though knew they were at odds or making friends with highly similar neighbours.
Inevitably, the outgroup preference going on in the 21st century, so jarringly far removed from say, the 7th or 8th centuries AD, means that we are left with the question, "How did this happen to us?", when we historically know for a fact how long the English had largely remained intact as a group. Mass migration from beyond the shores of England is a relatively new thing. Of course, there'll always be smart-arses quick to falsely quip through smug expressions and grinning teeth, about England being made by interlopers from the time after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire.
There will always be the contrarian waiting in the wings to try and draw a false equivalence between migrants whom have literally just arrived here this year, or say, since 2015 at least, and those whose ties to the land will have existed since at least the 10th century AD, and possibly as far back as the 5th century AD for some. The idea of us being a nation of 'immigrants' has been liberally used, to try and figuratively smack patriots and nationalists over the head for years already. It's a disgrace, of course. And the contrarian will believe they are correct, smugly handwaving away 1,600 years of Anglo-Saxon history as though it meant nothing to England.
The power of being the minority in a Western nation in 2024, is that they know they are going to be granted a range of privileges. A random woman can start screeching about patriarchy in a casual meeting, and not be considered mentally unstable, by those around her, even though doing that is obviously her own radicalisation on display. The kind of toxic echo chambers such people exist in 24/7 on social media like Twitter/X, is what further deepens their sickness, from what I can tell. They begin to act like they do in their little echo chambers and ivory towers online, in the real-world. And so the madness ensues, with people desperate to turn their play-pretend palaces of the mind, into the new terra firma of reality. And it is never going to be sane.
The power of being the minority is so often the sword, while the power of acting like the only majority, is the shield. It suites the bad faith actor interloper, to try and say, 'hello my fellow Brits', while hiding behind the undeserved attempt to call themselves a Briton. But then, out of nowhere, without anyone having been asked or given respect at any point at all, the same interloper can switch back to wanting to melt into the crowd, and to be considered integrated.
The Cuckoo Bird analogy comes to mind. The fat, greedy interloper, sat in the nest of the host bird, being spoilt rotten as the original hatchlings perish via starvation or literal suffocation under the Cuckoo bird chick - which eventually becomes so large it is bigger than the adult aged birds hosting it erroneously. The Cuckoo Bird continue to trick them by mimicking the calls of whichever victim species it is getting a free ride out of. Then it might even stay there long enough for starvation to become likely _for the parents_ if it carries on. Then, either something gives and it is forced out or it flies away. Parasitic behaviour. Yet the Cuckoo Bird got everything it wanted and grew big and strong. The species of the host victim birds, gains nothing.

There is an interpretation which is consistent.
Feeling white is internal, whereas the “privilege” one receives for being a white male is dependent on how others perceive you.
Why he never felt white isn’t evident in the title of the article (maybe the article makes it clear). But he could have never felt white for internal reasons (like not going to church) and not because of how others perceived him.

  • @marvalice3455

We can pretty easily harmonize these two statements.
He said he understood his privilege now, he never said anything about understanding privilege in his childhood. On the other hand, the quoye you gave about him not feeling white was an explicit reference to childhood. So, if we wish, we could say that he didn't feel white as a kid, but later learned of his privilege.
Of course, I don't believe this for a moment.
I believe that the way we think of ourselves happens in terms of narrative. We tell ourselves a story about who we are. And i think that, while these two quotes could be reconciled in a single narrative, i believe they actually speak to two different narratives he told about himself at two different times
