  • This is the third in a series of new 45-minute Webinars developed and hosted by ReasonIO. In this webinar, I introduce the participants to some of the main features of a classic doctrine of Stoic philosophy - Epictetus' Dichotomy of Control
We focus particularly on his discussions of this distinction in Enchiridion ch. 1 and in Discourses book 1, chapter 1. We go over the distinction itself, what getting it right or wrong involves, some common objections to the distinction, William Irvine's propose trichotomy, then finish by looking at Epictetus' conception of "use" (khresis) and a few examples he provides.
We also take about 20 minutes worth of questions, providing some answers to those.
This is a shorter version of a much more intensive, 2-hour online seminar, available on May 20, at 10 AM and 4 PM Central Time . If you'd like to learn more about that, click here - reasonio.wordpress.com/online...
We will be providing additional webinars throughout 2017. If you'd like to know more about them, click here - reasonio.wordpress.com/webinars/
We also offer longer, more intensive 2-hour online seminars each month. To learn more about those, click here - reasonio.wordpress.com/online...

12:54 - 13:15 ... It's always great to feel the "unwinding" of confused preconceptions. Like a sort of domino effect, or the untangling of a knot that you were oblivious to earlier. Micro-epiphanies heh

This is the video of the event that is past - that's why there's a video for it.

You mention playing ball and Socrates playing ball..It reminds me of what he said about good evil in Enchiridion. I have to wonder if I am hindered from the mysticism I experience according to my nature and perception. Perhaps my statement here is not grasped or even read though. This is not new so I suppose that is possible. I appreciate you expanding on the topic anyway.

Professor Sadler, thanks for this and the other great content you so tirelessly put up on your channel!
I had a question regarding the trichotomy proposed by William Irvine. If I understand you correctly, you say that this is something that the Stoics - especially Epictetus since the maxim of dichotomy is basically his invention - have already addressed. So Irvine's proposed trichotomy is basically not a modernization - rather, it can be seen as a more clearer way of putting what the Stoics had already said (although Irvine had no idea he was doing so)?
The reason I ask is I see some people bashing him in the forums for this trichotomy - almost like it's a blasphemy of sorts and I fail to understand the harshness. Is there some unintended implication I'm missing? From your explanation, all I seem to gather is there's no difference, so the middle branch proposed by Irvine was pointless. Thanks in advance
Edit: I understand that part of the blame they put on Irvine is also how he modified the goal as tranquility. Also, do you have any plans of reviewing more books? Thanks again!

@@GregoryBSadler My apologies, I hadn't seen the date on that video and assumed it was older than it is.
